Title: Hot Rod Drags at Shakey in September! Ok given! Names needed!
Post by: Neil Davies on July 09, 2017, 22:48:46 pm
I had an absolute blast at the Cal Look Drags this weekend, but having failed to get the motor in my car, I'm looking for another opportunity to put myself under ridiculous pressure to get it done.
Stretch and Dude and myself have decided to get our cars sorted for the Hot Rod Drags at Shakespeare County Raceway over the weekend of the 15th and 16th of September. It just so happens to be my 40th birthday weekend too!

We hereby challenge anyone who didn't make it to the Cal Look Drags with their cars to come and race with us! Jamie Palmer, that includes you! It would be great to see some more of the Rennwagens who did such an amazing job this week getting chance to flex their cars' muscles on the track without having to worry about organising and running the event for us.

So, who's up for it?
Me
Stretch
Dude
(add names here!)

Neil - I'll def be down for this after failing to get my gearbox back in time for this weekend. Apparently may get it back late this week and hopefully may make it to Bug Jam. Doing the Hot Rod weekend sounds like a great idea and will give everyone who was struggling another one to aim for!!

May want to check they will allow you on the track, as the NSRA have got funny about air cooled vws running at their events. I remember a few years ago, they would only let a max of 6 outlaw vws to race their. Hopefully this isn't the case any more?
Good idea though Neil !

yeah before you make and plans check you are welcome, as every time we have checked they have said no .and assuming this is the last year of shakey id imagine  it'll be packed with v8 power

Good point - I'll make a few enquiries! We could just grow quiffs and have massive turnups on our jeans?

Hopefully they'll let us run.  We've never had a problem at Gary's Picnic.  I thought shakey were much more relaxed about it than in the past as it mean't much revenue from paying RWYB'ers.  Let us know what Jerry says Neil.

I Hope they do. Its never been the track that's had the problem or the APIRA , just the NSRA who basically lease the track for these events. I may have an issue with the quiff though !! :D

I've spoken via e-mail to Jerry at Shakespeare County Raceway and he has said pretty much what Jim and Danny said, which is to run it by the NSRA. He's given me an e-mail address so I'll fire off a message later asking if they object to a dozen or so of us having a play. If not, it'll have to be one of the RWYB's later in September or into October.

Not bad at all! I don't think I got to spend time in the garage for at least the first six months!

As I said earlier, I e-mailed Jerry and he told me to speak to the NSRA. Donald (dth) had been making enquiries at the same time but as far as I know he's had no response from them. We'll give them another couple of days and send another message.

ok guys i asked Jerry last year if i could race at the hot rod drags and he said that he contacted NSRA and they said no. within a few days he posted an add for the event with pics of a beetle on.
Good luck getting entry.

On the NSRA website it mentions Outlaw Flat Four as one of the race classes! There's no mention of "no rear-engined vehicles on track" as there has been in previous years either, only a pre-'73 in RWYB rule.
Should we all just turn up anyway and wave money at them?

i might be wrong but if you want to turn up at shakey with a good amount of vws and have some good fun racing in rwyb ,there are 4 more open rwyb weekends then its shut for good .i was  told by a guy in the NSRA that vws are not hot rods and we have plenty of our own shows to go to .enjoy shakey while its there guys  :'( :'( :'( i also had a picture of my car removed from their forum as its not a hot rod ...... ::)

I've e-mailed Alan at the NSRA so when I get a response I'll post it here.
If it's a no-go then we'll do the RWYB at the end of September.

Meanwhile, my car has developed a leaky master cylinder and broken a handbrake cable! Rather than fix either of them I've been stripping gearboxes! Got the short axles off a '66 gearbox, then took a late 1300 box apart - found that one of the 15-tooth side gears has broken - the pieces were in the end of the axle tube. Next one was another late 1300 box, this time with a crack in one of the 17-tooth side gears! Looks like this box has been in a pond for years as the input shaft had seized solid...
Back to the '66 box for more side gears. Should be able to piece together a late 1300 gearbox with superdiff, heavy duty sideplate and short axles, fingers crossed its in time!

I've had a reply back from Alan and he has said there isn't an issue as long as we let him know names and details about the cars. We'll be an invitational group so although there has been no mention of a number limit I guess 40-odd cars is probably taking the mickey a bit!
If we can get this sorted this week before I go back to school that would be good.

Quote this bit and add your names and details below:

Neil Davies, red '68, 2007cc. Expected low 14's

Realistically I'm not going to make it.  I am working on the car when I get the chance, but, time is limited at the minute.  Hopefully I'll be able to come along to watch though.

I know mate, I think that's one of the reasons O/FF don't do that event any more. I'd have thought there are still a fair few not going abroad, and as we seem poised to lose Shakey at the end of the year it's a better alternative than sitting at home!

No worries, let me know if the other bug pans out and I can add you to the list.

O/FF have a MSA round the following weekend, so the ones not going to DAS will be doing that

Aaand... Im out. :'(

Worked really hard but not going to be ready to race. Over the last week we've drilled the extra holes in the superdiff to improve oiling, modified the sideplate for the same reason, set up the side gear clearance and drilled & pinned the threaded collars in the diff. Last night we discovered that we'd accidentally fitted the 3.88 ring gear but still had the 4.375 pinion. Oops.
Dad gave up most of today to get the gearbox finished with the correct ring gear, new gaskets, new gaiters on the axle tubes and so on.
Problem came with the master cylinder - rebuild kits seem to be NLA so we bought a cheap LHD one and used the internals in our RHD body. Cheaper than a rebuild kit too. Unfortunately turned off two of the pipefittings so got to replumb the whole front of the car.
Its either fix the brakes or fit the engine and gearbox.
Gutted.

We'll still be there but only as spectators again.

Arrived (in the daily Skoda) about 20 minutes ago. Wife had been here in the T25 for over 90 mins...

First impressions is that its rammed! I've not seen Shakey so busy in years. Double gutted the car isn't ready!
