I can believe it reduces oil slung, but doesn't it make the teeth a lot weaker as well?
There's less surface to take the power, or doesn't it matter that much?

I'd like to know how much of an increase in horsepower that actually would make, plus if you're chasing minimal horsepower gains like that why not just use a straight cut cam gear which saves hp anyway and removes thrust loads on the cam bearing and you don't have to bother with machining.

We used a set of old Magnum straight cut gears that were narrowed by a Pro Stock team . I am not sure why they did it but it apparently did not effect the strength of the gear as  we are using K800 valve springs on this turbo engine .

it is the same idea as the groves in your tires to clear the water. it works, but on a cam gear this may be in the 'marginal gains' corner. that said i would do it if my engine was still apart  ;D

I did it back n the seventies and on the dyno saw no difference

It might free up a few milli-hp.  Not measurable with any dyno, though.

I got one in the engine, so far the biggest gain has been another number to my forum post count
