Title: Increasing from 2180 to 2332 & would it run on 48IDA's?
Post by: yut.sin1301 on October 31, 2017, 17:25:59 pm
Hi there, My name is Jeen
My 2180 engine just gone pop, case and number one piston are destroyed but everything else is savable. I was going to up my engine a little by getting 94 mm case and matching pistons, but i had a thought about maybe

increasing the crank as well to a 84 mm and running 2332 instead?

My worry is budget is tight and I would need all my original engine parts, and to run the engine on my original 48 IDA webbers? Would they be up for the job?

My original engine spec was
bugpack 92mm crank and case

Scat 1.4 rockers
CB super race rods 5 inch
FK89 cam & straight cut gears
48 IDA ' s

Thanks in advance

As Kalle says, 48IDAs are perfect, but as you say you are on a tight budget, I'd keep the crank and rods any just go for a 2276. You know the history of them, they're presumably already balanced, and there's a little more room in the case. You'd be forking out quite a bit of money for an extra 58cc...

When I increased my 2017 cc to 2332 cc, I used Mahle 94 cylinders that were trimmed to fit the 90.5/92 holes in the block.  Ran them for 10 years without issue in my 12-second street-strip Beetle.  Your 5” rods might be too short?

Yes your rods will be to short

I have just done the same going from 2180 to 2332, using 84mm crank on 94mm B&B I had to change my rods to 5.5 inch
