Title: My 1966 Cal Looker project part #2
Post by: Frenchy Dehoux on February 01, 2018, 06:57:50 am
I decided to do some work on my 66  while waiting for parts for my customer's car . Making a cut on the opposite side of the pedal assembly so next time i need to replace the clutch cable would be easier and also made a cover for it. Also installing a new fuel line through the pan tunnel and also making inspection covers for them too. I have rubber mat covers to install over these area and will not be seen.

 Thanks

Hi Frenchy, Looks outstanding, I read you will use rubber mats so these inspections plates will not be seen.  So no Dynamat or sound inhibitors ? I just spent the last two weekends covering everything. :-\

Post by: Frenchy Dehoux on March 27, 2018, 05:06:32 am

Buddy Hale and I took a walk around the 66 last week and I had pointed out some of the issues I had seen on the 66 after it was painted keeping in mind that Buddy did not do the body work on this car it had been done when I bought it and when the car is in primer very hard to see any imperfections such as small waves and small pressure dents etc .... So Buddy decided it would be best if we were to go around and pencil in all the issues I had seen and re block the body in the area and or re do some of the body work. As Buddy told me let me handle this and when we are done with it it will look like it should be my way is the best way to do it . All I had to do is to listen to the master at work.

  Thanks

Very excited to see the remainder of the build.

My black 57 ragtop was painted by Pete Santini back in 1984, after it sat around for a few months I had a few spots I wasn't happy with (including the rear apron like yours). I took the car to Becker's Bug House in Orange and they fixed the spots for me. I never regretted doing that. I have seen a lot of cars Buddy Hale has done and they are all amazing!

Stopped by Buddy Hale shop today Type One Restoration as the car was painted earlier this week . Wanted to see how it looked L639 is the paint code for the Zenith Blue the last time the car was painted June of last year and waited 30 days before taking it back . Buddy and I had gone around the car and felt that the body work needed more attention. So we decided to re do the entire car and re priming and blocking it again until we were satisfied with the out come. So after two month of doing extensive re work on the body it was painted this past Tuesday and today I saw a big difference not only in the color change but on how straight the car is. Today they were using the yellow tape to make a tape line from the under side of the body where it will receive a special undercoating as you see on the bed liners of trucks which is more durable and much stronger. So the underside of the body will be getting this treatment including all four fenders. Next week Wednesday I will be picking up the car where it will sit in my garage for 30 days for the paint to cure than taking it back for the final wet sanding and buff this usually take a couple of week to get done. All I can say I am so fortunate to of had met Buddy Hale over 20 years ago when he did my 54 Oval window and now his work is over the top. If you have the chance to have Buddy Hale do one of your car you will see what I mean .

  Thanks

A Beetle's sabbatical to the body/paint shop can seem to take forever . . . Hale did really nice work (twice?) on a considerably large job in a reasonable amount of time . . . I'm impressed!

Title: Re: My 1966 Cal Looker project part #2
Post by: Frenchy Dehoux on October 07, 2018, 16:12:23 pm

The reason why it was done twice is because the body had issues after Buddy painted it. Buddy did not do the body work first time around and after i had looked at it closer noticed a lot of imperfection in the body work and Buddy decided to start all over again.

I did a bit more work on the 66 today. Before you know it I will have it done in no time. You will notice most of us that have restored VW over the years that on the bug the 4 front bolts 2 on each side on the pan they get rusted out and they are very difficult to remove so I decided to use my hole saw and make my own inspection area . After this I will use a rubber plug to hide this inspection area and to keep water out. I installed the gauge panels and the radio block off plate and the glove box door. In the engine compartment I installed the right and left side breather fittings at the base that will be connected to the valve covers once the engine is installed. Mounted the fuel lines and fuel line pressure regulators and the main fuel line from the pan to the bulk head . And both rear deck lid hinges .

    Thanks

Frenchy could you post a pic of how you did the fender wells? what type of undercoat or chip guard was used? I am trying to decide how to do mine and any advice or type you used would be helpful.
Thanks,

Larry

Today i installed the wiper motor assembly and wiper arms and blades. New glove box and wiper switch and headlight switch . Front hood installed with VW emblem and hood handle. As you know after installing the hood now you are ready to install the handle and latch the next step can be very stressful once you think you have it all lined up and to close the hood and wonder if you will be able to open it. If you do these adjustment and pay attention for the latch to be dead center you will be OK . Tomorrow i will be taking all of the original body side molding and hood molding to be polished .

Frenchy,

Goedemorgen Edgar.  :)

Just an example, they are called "button head" socket screws or "button head" bolts.
I use them a lot on my motorbikes due to their light weight, in bright zinc finish (stainless can sometimes cause corrosion over time).

I have no idea whether this company is good or not, but just to give an example ........

Fabory is good stuff, in Belgium and the Netherlands the're 'fabory-only-stores'.
Near Ghent there is one for example.

Today took the 66 out of the garage and made a few adjustments such as the front end been low enough where it will have a good stands. Installed a pointer above the pulley , the rear seat cross brace, the Gene Berg signature series shifter, Buddy Hale painted the fuel tank , and my son will be doing some modifications to the headers with a V band because now it is touching the apron and I do not want to burn the paint on the apron. Next I will order my Flat 4 Empi steering wheel and all gauges and carpet kit .

My mistake this pressure regulator should be installed in the main fuel line before it arrive to the regulator and not after as I have done here reading when it is going to the right carburetor. The fuel pump i have is set at 3 lbs so this mean as it is now it is reading 1.5 which is correct but I need to changed to where it should be mounted correctly. Actually it still should be reading 3 lbs regardless where I have the gauge mounted but would be better under the regulator.
