Title: Berg shifter clean and lube
Post by: Martin S. on August 28, 2018, 18:12:58 pm
I've used my Berg shifter for decades now. Seems to me Gene recommended removing it and taking it apart to clean and lube the moving parts inside, like the cable for reverse, I think.
Has anyone done that, or have any tips? It's working well now and I don't want to mess it up.  :P

I always stripped and rebuilt used ones, the cable is always smoother after a lube  :o

It is pretty easy, also they have the parts if for some reason the cable is messed up. I just bought a very old shifter and wasn't in a hurry to use it so I sent it to Berg and they took it all apart, cleaned, and lubed it up. Also supplied me with a new plate for it. Very reasonable price and only took a couple of days. Tim at Berg was great to deal with (like he always has been).

That's good to know, thanks!
I'll take a look for the old Berg instructions at home on the shifter and see what it says as well.  ::)

I dug out the old Berg Book of Instructions.
I remember wondering if it was a good idea to pay for written instructions for parts I don't own.
Turns out that these instructions are invaluable and a fantastic period collectible from the day.
I found this old letter too. Some people when they die you don't even think much about after they die, but Gene Berg sure wasn't one of them. Other people are instead sadly missed.
