Title: Hybrid Heads L5/L7 from Aircooled.net ???
Post by: Motox166 on October 19, 2018, 07:26:33 am
Well, my used used heads were different than I thought I was getting. I don't think th PO knew what he had. He sold them as a standard L5.

Specs that I have verified:
94mm bore
40x35 valves = L5
76 or 77cc intake runners = L7
64cc chambers
Aircooled.net CNC'd in large print on the bottom fin.
049 castings

Ports have not been touched since CNC'd from the looks of it.

Was this a mistake somehow that got out the door? Did someone install smaller valves after new?
Is this some secret racers trick: venturi effect with the medium size ports tapering down towards the smallish 40mm valve.
I'm told by the PO that these are circa 2014.

Should I go bigger valves to match the runners?
If so what size? Having a local a vw machinist do the work, so is it worth the cost over buying new Panchitos for $600-700 or ??? BTW, paid $400.

Building a:
2165
86c w/ 1.4s - thinking 106 LC?
10:1
Dual 44s
1 5/8 exhaust or 1 3/4?
7500 or 8000 max rpm
Vw650 springs, Ti retainers
As41 mag with bushed lifter bores, full flow
Bugpack crank, pauter rods

Shooting for 180hp+ at the crank

Use:
70 Baja Bug, mostly a fun after work/ weekend warrior.
Once in a while, play around in the Oregon sand dunes.
002 bus box, 30"x 13" sand paddles for sand drag racing and 32" for the street.

P.S. I posted this on theS*mba also. But I like the the answers I get here better.

Btw: Jim Ratto is my spirit animal. I like the way thinks!

The cam and rockers (0n 108LC at least) is good for that RMP. Not too sure about the carbs and heads. If the heads were from JPM, I would not question it..

Change them out with 044 mini or regular wedge ports. GREAT head for the combo. My 2110 on old style wedge ports, 86C + 1,4 and 1 3/4 exhaust turned 200 hp at those RPMs. But on IDAs..  :)

Yes, that does sound like a good idea. What compression are you at?
Can you describe your power band? What rpm does it start pulling hard? 3500?

John @ aircooled.net said about the L5 heads:
"A test 2.0L engine with these heads made 186 HP with Dual 44 Webers. Web 86C and 10:1 compression. Cam pulls to 7500, but I recommend shifting at 7k"
