Title: Best aftermarket pulleys?
Post by: beetletom on November 06, 2018, 20:00:37 pm
I?m after black anodised pulleys for my engine.

What is the best type? The Saco pulleys look ok?
And the billet spin true top pulley you can now buy?

Or am I better off getting a genuine Vw bottom pulley

And a genuine Vw alternator pulley? Which I have on another alternator
But getting the back part off without warping it would be difficult?

for generator/alternator, I feel the FLAT 4 pulley is best made. Better than the last OE VW pulley I bought about 10 years ago.
No defects with FLAT 4 pulley, at all.

Genuine Bugpack Spin Tru are good - if you can get one.

I won a CB serpentine set a year ago still sealed, not installed as of yet. Any users out there?
I also have an OG Std sized Suntana pulley I?d found decades ago but never used.
Are these worth using?

Have you looked at CSP pulleys ?

Haven't used them myself but seen a couple on other engines and always look good quality.

Didn't think they could be improved upon.

I've had two Flat Four pulleys now, a gold one when they first came out..probably 7 years ago, great quality and is still on the car now. I bought another earlier this year, it came in black. The back half was a little loose on installation, as I was taking it off (by hand) to inspect, the outer ring actually broke off leaving the hub stuck on my alternator. When I finally got the "hub" off it looked to me like it was plated 1st then pressed together, causing a weak spot. The seller sent me a new one, gold this time which is a better fit but I don't have a lot of miles on it yet so can't comment. Interested to see what the updated design is.

Hi Tom,
Not sure about a conventional Vee belt but suggest you dont go with a serpentine system!!

http://www.offroadvw.net/tech/wes/fan.html

Long and short of it is that the vee belt slips ~4 to 4.5K engine rpm however that isnt a problem as the gain in airflow vs actually cooling effect isnt worth it!
AND to double a fans speed takes a cube of the power!
The serpentine will definitely spin the fan faster but also take a boatload of power away from your right foot to do so!!
