Are you making any big changes to the engine for this go around? I assume you will be running the roller cam 4" JPM engine again right? Corn fed or gasoline? Good luck, I look forward to watching your progress again!

Going over next month to work on car, I did some changes to oiling system & rockers to get more oil on valve train & heads to keep it all a bit cooler as dry sump scavenge was to efficient, and swapped out ex valve to stainless as the Ti ones were worrying me as we had durability issues with them in another engine, I also replaced all the slip joints on header with V bands as well as it was quite slow to build boost before so wanted it all sealed up tight :)  rest is the same still, while i am there hopefully dyno it on e85 and see what it makes, got an intercooler set up i made for it as well so if we have time test both ways, then after that decide if its enough, if not swap out to race fuel and intercooler for the racing part and e85 for drive.
With the fuel tech on car now I was able to get a decent tune on 91octane as well even with the 2100cc injectors on car now so it wont be a drama if we need fuel and e85 isn't available which was a real problem last time.
Only other thing I did was change 4th gear ratio as it was so tall i couldn't really use it except on freeway and I don't need to go 160mph + so dropped it a little to allow using it more

cheers Richie

How is the E85 availability on this years event? Having a E85 race map, and a gas map should be "easy enough" to make?

Did you run last year without an intercooler?

#Generally in that area looks pretty good but as they don't tell us route until after we made the passes at track each day its hard to know 100% if there are some on route

Yes no intercooler then

I liked the way Ray Vallero made his mod on extra cooling on the valve train.... by drilling a hole in the intake pushrod. (in this post http://cal-look.no/lounge/index.php/topic,16934.60.html)
Did you do something like this Richie?

Wondering if this will work or give a loss in oil pressure.

Regards Edgar

Hi Eddie

no i did look into that but these pushrods are so thick[for the high spring pressure from roller cam] and so hard from heat treatment that we couldn't make a hole in them. As this pump has plenty of extra volume spare and excess is being bled off I should have enough in reserve to not see any difference

cheers Richie

A brake line tapped into the head “above” the springs should work fine?

Couple of holes per spring.

Saw a picture a time ago, will try to find it

Oil-cooled GSXRs have it Ritchie, works very well.
Maybe a small length of small diameter (brake line was a good idea) with a banjo bolt screwed thru the centre top of the rocker cover.
I also thought running a steel line between the rockers and the springs under the pivot area, but those springs are much bigger than stk, might not fit there.

Going to see how what I have done works and if its good enough leave it alone but if not then this is similar to next idea i will try :)

This is the solution John Brewster used to cure the valve seizing problem on the original Scat split-port heads he ran on Street Lethal back in about 1988/89. It worked well and was simple to expedite.

Incorporate sprayers in the valve covers.

E 85 is available from pump 2 miles from dinwiddie track. I live about 20 miles away. If you need a VP E85 it’s available about 5 mikes from my house.

As I told you Richie, anything I can do to help don’t hesitate to ask. I can store stuff, have mil,l lathe and tig in shop.

 ;)

I've done this on my scat 1.4s, are your squirter holes open full time or just full lift? I'm considering making mine squirt only at full lift, my thinking is it will help maintain oil film on shaft and provide better squirt pressure when open.

How will you control it so its only open at full lift? I am not sure how that could be achieved, so far we just added a oiling hole to squirt onto springs & guides/valve stems and at moment am modifying shafts to get the oil from feed hole to shafts round to outlet hole

I'd say concentrate on cooling the valve springs. Google "spintron testing" and see for valvesprings getting smoking hot in seconds while getting a light oil splash cooling.
Get the heat out of springs and the rest of the top end follows helping to keep the oil film intact between loaded metal surfaces.

Both cars had a little test on sunday, Steve was working on launch control and trying a new rear tyre and I was testing gearbox mainly as had tps fail so no boost control

Like Richie said, I was out there to try out a different tire and some launch control strategies.  Since it's a beetle there really isn't any good way to bring along a second pair of wheels/tires to swap out at the track, so I want to try and do the whole week on one set which means I needed something D.O.T. approved.  I had a few issues, but by the third pass I ended up with a decent starting point for Drag Week 2019.

Six weeks to go and there's been some progress on my end.  I wanted to give this year a full faith effort so I pulled the engine for a refresh/really good look at everything.

Good news is everything looked good.  Bearings looked new, and cam/lifters were perfect.  As long as it was apart, I figured I'd give it a little treat here and there.

Bearings went to Calico to get coated- I've never had an issue without it, but it seems to help out a lot when things go wrong.

Fresh set of rings with a little more end gap- Ring gap was fine for the power I wanted to make with this combination, but we greatly exceeded that number when it went on the dyno.

Cylinder heads looked great, just having them serviced so I know they've got a clean bill of health.

Shortblock is all back together, just need cylinder heads back and I can finish this of and stuff it back in the car.

Sorry, no.  I think the few pictures I've put up on this thread are the only ones I've ever posted.  Anything in particular you want a better look at?

It looks like you are soon ready for the big event Steve. E85 and no intercooler? What intake temperatures do you see after a full boost run?

If you use a thermosister to measure IAT it's not great, if you use a good sensor it gets worse!  I just don't have the space for an intercooler without cutting up the car, so I've just been really conservative with the tune until I get my head around these intake temps and what it wants for timing/fuel.

I want to see everything about your car  :D looks impressive!

Thank you.  Stephan did an article on the car for Hot VW's, so there's a pretty good look at it in the August 2019 issue- you should be able to get back issues direct from Hot VW's.

While I was waiting on parts I added a few sensors, so I ended up spending longer than I wanted getting everything set up and configured, but it runs now.  Just a few small things to button up but we're definitely closing in on something!

Dam! With so much time left for DragWeek you could build a new engine and have one in spare  :D

Finding room for stuff i do need like racesuit and tools is hard enough, after last time if i could take anything it would be a spare gearbox ::)

Then have a cup of tea, log on and report to us here at The Lounge. Not too much to ask for is it  ;D

Hi all,

been a good week watching/helping etc, well compared to not being here at all but still sucks to just be a spectator :(.
Still finding it hard to even look at pics of the car right now hence why i haven't put any up myself, they are all over net to see if you really need to but from middle of back wheel area backwards its destroyed, not looked at engine yet but hoping that has survived.

Kalle, Steves car just has cable clutch with no management at all and a double disc so we are trying to get it to leave using wheel speed & boost as the power restriction in ecu, he only has about 15 1/4 mile passes on it as turbo car so its still work in progress but yesterday we made some changes off data from 1st 3 days and combined with controlled burnout length and different tyre pressure got a 1.40 60ft but then yes he did miss 2nd gear. Hopefully today it will all come together, he should get enough track time for about 3 passes if needed

Hi Richie, good to hear from you. So sorry about the car, I saw a picture yesterday and I was shocked by the damage, but it could have been so much worse. It does look salvageable, and I'm sure once it's stripped down it won't look so bad. I wish the car was closer as I'd be more than happy to help.

Final day was a bit of anticlimax, after the drive on thursday went with no problems it rained most of morning then when track opened and Steve got a pass it broke both axles off line and he only had spare CVs, no axles so that was it done.
Was good to see the 5 second drag week finally barrier broken by Tom bailey in the last pass of open class cars with a 5.99@250mph, and also to see the Ascona 1.0 make it after a really hard week of problems and run more 7s and finish 3rd overall, the Swedish Street week corvette of Stefan Gunarsson[not sure if spelling is correct] run 6.72 after overcoming issues earlier in week

I think it sounds cheesy and won't help licking any wounds, but getting there in a beetle 'is' an achievement on its own.

you have to look at what and where you come from. like I said before a street car with 500 hp in a beetle... you can count those on one or two hands worldwide... and the main reason you did this is to prove it can be street worthy and not be a trailerqueen with a license plate. nothing but respect from over here. weel done to both.

Final race report:  What Richie said.  :)

I had trouble getting the car to shift into 2nd clean.  Not sure if it was an issue with the clutch itself, cable adjustment, or driver but we just did what we could.  Getting the car to leave well without any clutch management and a D.O.T. tire is definitely a tall order, but the last pass at MIR it went 1.40 60' with the wheels in the air (zero front wheelspeed until 1.63 seconds into the run), just to be thrown out when I couldn't get it into 2nd.  The next pass was back at Virginia Motorsports Park, and on the first pass it kicked out both axles.  The car did break the beams though, so I got a default timeslip of 20.000 @ 50.00mph which knocked my average from a 10.44 @ 136 down to a 12.35 @ 119mph.

I played hookey from work today to get myself settled and everything cleaned up, and managed to knock out a clipshow of sorts from the live feed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ctTGBtslLs&t=247s

All in all, it was an awesome trip.  I got to spend an entire week doing nothing but driving around in a hot rod Volkswagen, going racing with my friends.  Hot Rod Drag Week really is the trip of a lifetime, and I've been fortunate to do it twice.

I really want to thank Richie and Jo from RJ Volks Performance for all of their help and support, as well as my navigator/buddy Other Steve for letting me talk him into this again, and also my dad for flying out to join in all the mayhem.

Hey Steve,
Enjoyed watching your runs on the live stream (the second best to being there in person  :( ) and even Freiberger seems to have a soft spot for your car now.
Breaking the axles on the last day was truly a shitter. I had high expectations for the last day but I'm sure you'll be back at the track soon to get that 9 ;-)
What axles do you run to snap them? With Bus or 930 CV's? Did they break after the splined part? I guess it makes a lot of torque now.
Frank

Not sure on Drag Day yet.  Obviously I need to put some axles in it, and I'll probably upgrade while I'm at it.  The bigger issue is the facetime I really need to put in with the family since I abandon them for two weeks to go play with cars!

Frank

Breaking the axles didn't really bother me.  These were bus cv joints and I honestly thought the breaking point would have been either the cv or the stock 8mm bolts.  The axles were 300M, but there's only so much you can do with those dimensions.

I went with type 2 cv joints when my goal was a high 11 aircooled streetcar, so they definitely passed expectations.  I know people have gone quicker/faster with type 2 cv's/axles, but with no clutch management and 5-600 passes on them I'm happy with what they did.

I'll post a picture once I get them all apart and cleaned up, but it looks like the first one snapped clean about an inch before the splines.  Once that broke, all the power went to the remaining axle and just wrenched it apart right at the splines.

Upmost repect to you both, sorry to hear about the car, Ritchie, but, at the end of the day, the fact you're ok is the main thing.

Small update

I have stripped most of the burnt stuff off now and it does look like I will be able to fix it all myself, main engine and gearbox are ok and body is not too distorted so like everything its now just down to time and money!!! :o ::)

Hopefully it will all be done by next summer but will depend on how much time i can get in USA on it, i did consider shipping it home to repair but having 2 cars in uk to race already i really don't need another one right now & still have a desire to finish drag week in it.

Great to hear the damage is repairable and hasn't taken out the motor and trans. Just have to go again next year!

You deserve better luck considering the effort you’ve put in just to get to the start line. Here’s hoping you get to have another shot at it in the future. I’m sure I speak for a lot of us watching that I was shocked to see the damage to the car and can only imagine how you felt at the time.

Onwards and upwards 👍

I think it sounds cheesy and won't help licking any wounds, but getting there in a beetle 'is' an achievement on its own.

you have to look at what and where you come from. like I said before a street car with 500 hp in a beetle... you can count those on one or two hands worldwide... and the main reason you did this is to prove it can be street worthy and not be a trailerqueen with a license plate. nothing but respect from over here. weel done to both.

Well said… I agree totaly.
Best Luck next year guys.

Interesting (sorry) but I have 300M axles and 28 splines 930 CV´s.
What diameter are those axles on the non-splined part?

0.9640" or 24.5mm

What are those numbers on a 930 axle?

Sorry! Took a while for me to check them out. My 930 axles are 27.7 mm in diameter.  1.090"
I know the splines are 28 in number but I do not know the diameter around the splines. I do know it is larger and the splines do fade out in to the "open" and the smaller diameter of the non splined part. (27.7 mm). Just in same way as yours in the picture.

EMPI ?

For info If the material is chromed then it becomes brittle
Therefore all car manufacturers are painted to avoid this problem

EMPI ?

Not EMPI, not chrome.  These were 300M from TCS (90% sure).  They were more than adequate for what I was trying to do at the time which was to have a high 11 second street car.

TCS!  Yes, here they are.  Mine are same. Very quick delivery for being a customized order. Nice company to work with.

Micke, what diameter and what CV´s?
What are the three on top?   (not my preferred way to have splines end up "inside" material.)

Orvar is the way to go! But not the spline/ diameter solution.

108 mm
My experience with promod drive shafts(V8) is made in the same way
If they are smaller then you get no flex in the shaft. Then they go off at the splinter or twist
What are the three on top?  It is my own that are made in Gothenburg  ( Aröds mekaniska )

Thanks to both of y'all for representing ... Hate to hear of the breakages and damage but all-in-all I hope it was somehow worth it.

There was an article about the car in the last volksworld magazine.
You could see the specs and some evolution in there.

Was this the November issue? It has an article listing of “Drag Beetle” on the upper cover corner, but nothing else. I guess I’ve gotten spoiled by reading Richie’s build threads. I live about 10 miles from the shop of former Drag Week competitor Jeff Lutz, so the local hot rodding scene has multiple entrants to the event every year. It would be great to learn about Steven’s car, for those thinking their 1915 with dual 40’s is going to run similar times and, for those with the actual means to build a similar vehicle to learn about the components that “lived”. We now know Type 2 TCS 300m axles with 600 passes won’t make the cut.  ;)

After waiting, and waiting for my Volksworld back issue to arrive, I finally figured out I paid for the ONLINE access to the issue.....

There wasn’t any mention of the differential in Steve’s trans. Does anyone know if it was a spool, super diff, or a torque bias diff?

It was mainly good, slight sign of detonation from when fuel pressure dropped but everything was ok to use again, I have got the bearings coated this time as it works so well in other car so will be interesting to see how they work, and a different dry sump pump which gives more clearance to pulley so i was able to go up a bit in pulley size and get fan ratio better but nothing else changed.

No, can't be 100% sure, but most likely is a injector o ring failure as log showed a pressure drop but then it was stable at the lower pressure

Its a Dailey pump like i use on other car[ except that one is belt driven] and yes another stage inside case scavenges through stock pick up tube :)
