Title: VW 3:88 ring and pinion
Post by: leec on September 20, 2019, 13:44:16 pm
I have a gearbox that needs a new ring and pinion. The box is going in a light tube chassis car (550kg ish) and am looking to run about 350bhp with either a turbo motor or gas.

I'd love a Weddle 3:88 but at £1000 that is a tough ask at the moment. I have got a good used VW 3:88 but am I asking too much of it with the above mentioned BHP?

Thanks,
Lee

Have it shot permed.

Run it till it breaks, or close your eyes and order a Weddle.

The weight will help a lot, as will clutch management

Thanks,
What did your box have, weddle?

The type 1 I had was fully weddle internals.

The new mendy also has a 3.88 R&P, but a bit bigger  ;D

Had a PM from someone who has gone deep into the 10's with a vw 3:88.

Anyone else with experience that could help me decide?

I ran Klinkenbourg (ie, VW) 3.88 diffs in 'No Mercy' - turbo'd and into the 'nines'.

Thanks Keith,
Think it's got to be worth a go.

Hi
vw R&P can handle more than 450 hp and 600 Nm
We see this here in Sweden
But then you have to control the clutch
99 cases out of 100 when you break R&P you have no control over the clutch
Another thing that can kill is the quality of the oil
(for aggressive clutch pressure)

Do they still have that same ring and pinion in the gearbox now or swap it out every year?

As a member of Outlaw flat four you know that most of the quick cars run a 091 box. The only one I can think of running in that HP range with a type one box is Clarke he runs a daiken.  Don’t waste your time, but a bus box

Hi Dave,

A bus box is obviously a great option, but not one I can entertain at the moment.

You could always borrow the box from your oval and use that to get the car up and running.

That's the back up plan  ;D

Like others have already stated , it is more about the clutch than the OEM 3.88 . I and my race partner are both over 500 fwhp now and still have not cracked or broken a stock 3.88 . After 7 years of abusing my Rev6 clutch I have finally had to rebuild it, I had to replace one disc and lightly glass bead the other disc.  Mike McCarthy

What’s the plan then?  Are you going to use the vw R&P or get a weddle?

Neither. Pete has come up with another solution  :)

Pete found a keyed aftermarket 3:88 for me that he had in stock.

Cool, you should have the notch out next year without borrowing bits of the beetle.

As Dave said I've been running Danny's old type one box that lasted well over 6 years of racing and hard passes with a stage 2 and daikin combos which come from great advice from others.

Loved the set up. I used to drag the car to the line underload and just put the clutch pedal to the floor, hold the motor on the 2 step and just let go and lasted years. It even held up with 70hp of nitrous off the line  ::).

It only broke when I went to a kep 4 puck and tired to launch the same and just broke the R&P.

The daikin only started to slip with a 140 shot but it was after 2 burn outs as they pushed us back and I think the disc had over 40 passes on it so I got my money's worth...!.

Thanks for the info  ;D

I’ve never been too hard on the gearbox/clutch combo so will go with the R+P Pete has found for me.
