Title: TIKIMADness getting ready to go fast in 2015
Post by: tikimadness on November 11, 2007, 20:26:06 pm
Hey guys I've been looking around here for some time and thought I would share my ongoing project with you.

I used to drive a 1972 germanlook beetle (the sequel)

But after 7 years I wanted something different so last winter I started buillding the tikimadness
I raced it at bugin#1 and at ddd5.

It turned out nice but I was on the way of redoing some things such as narrowing the rear suspension to fit the wheels under stock fenders( don't like widend fenders).

I also wanted some more poke in the back so I'm adding a turbo and a 4 barrel to my 2.4 typ4

yesterday I had the change to buy a 1954 oval shell allready prepped and just needs paint.
The body is close to perfection so it's a good base to make a really nice car.

I allways liked metalflake so I'm thinking of gold over brown flake paintjob with TIKIMADNESS in goldleaf

Trying to get that 60's 70's gasserstyle

I'll post pics asap

Michael

yesterday I removed the body to make some changes to the rollcage. The (old) body has been scrapped already because it had no reusable parts.

I'll try to finish the rear suspension and the cage so I can pick up the oval shell and modify it to fit on my floorpan.

I wasn't sure about the flipfront but I decided to not use it but to sell it because I don't think it is much sense to cut up a perfect oval body to then put the flipfront on.

I have been working on the car this weekend and allthough progress is slow I need to sort out these small yhings

The narrowing of the irs is finished and I've been detailing the cage.

Hope to pick up the oval shell very soon,so it's going to look like a car again.

managed to get some free hours during the last few days(late hours).

I made up my mind and decided to loose the innerfenders front and rear and the luggage area and the pieces under the bonnet.
At first I wasn't sure about the cutting but as I took a good look at the car I found that it was never going to be a showwinning body.
That's because the car has been repaired after a serious accident somewhere in the 60s.There are seams along the entire car from the rear left hand side to the front right hand side.it has been done to a very high standard but by cutting up the body I have lost most of the seams.

trialfitted the doors tonight and found out I hav to cut out a piece of the front of the doors in order to close them.Since the rollcage was build last year in a mexico body and the older oval doors are thicker things don't fit the way I thought they would............

also I'm looking where to put the switches and gauges,

@Kobus I'm still thinking about it,on one side it will add a lot of strength but on the other side there is the weight issue.I was thinking of adding a tubular structure from the bottom fenderbolts to the front axle.In case of an accident(hope that never happens)it wil get destroyd any way.
I think I keep withthe subtle tubular structure.

I have to wait until thursday before I can continue  :-\

had some free hours this morning so I went to the garage to do some work.Started on the frontend but I didn't have enough roundbar so I have to finish that tomorrow.
I'll be making a cross between the 2 struts to make it rigid.

Also I fitted the stuff that belongs to the dashboard to see how it's going to look once it's ready and I can say I'm pleased with the way it looks.

I will finish welding when the body and floorpan are seperated again(hopefully for the last time before paint).

Nothing much to show right now,I have started to build the pipes between the turbo and the intake.

I did some thinking lately and decided not to keep working like an idiot to try and finish the car before the start of the season. There is just to much work to do to get everything prepped for painting paint and assemble it and to rebuild the entire engine.

So now I am thinking of painting only the inside and leave the outside to some pros  (hopefully if funds allow english pros ;))

If all goes like planned there will be a glassfibre gasserstyle bonnet waiting for me at the volksworldshow.

Think I'll go back to the garage for now.

@ Russel :sorry but it will look like a project this season(primer)

After being sick for a few weeks I had the energy to go and work on the car again hopefully Ï'm staying out of the hospital now.

So here goes,
I've been working on the engine because I wasn't pleased the way some repairs on the body were done.I now found some replacement sheetmetal in the UK and I wil pick it up at vowo show.So no updates on the car for now.

I did however work on the engine

My bonnet will be ready for pick up at the end of the month but without the gaugepod I wanted so I made one myself which will be grafted in the bonnet once I have it.

I began with roof insulation and fabbed the scoop which I covered with polyester.

Did you raise the trans? Looks like you already have some negative camber there, if you havent raised it I think you should consider it. Keep the tires flat for a good launch...
Looking good ;)

Title: Re: TIKIMADness
Post by: tikimadness on March 22, 2008, 22:00:15 pm
@Zach thanks for the comment, yes I did raise the trans by about 4 inches. If my measurements are correct the car should have some positive camber when it is finished.
I haven't put all of the bolts that hold the suspension in.And I haven't aligned the car because I will disassemble the car in a few months to get the undecarriage painted.

I don't know jet.
I first need to see where the carb is going to sit as I don't have the turbo I want to use.I'm going to pick up the turbo this june at cb performance when I 'm in the states.
It's going to be bigger then the one I'm using as a mock up :D

Let me know when you are coming over to tilburg and I make sure i'll be there. Are you going to the vowo show next week?

Looks very good, something I noticed recently is the cars being built have a small loop around the front of the fuel cell to protect it from a frontal collision,I believe this is in the aftermath of Pat Mcdermotts fiat crash, might be a good idea to add this?

Well I am back and was it a great time in the states.sure met a lot of nice people.

I had the chance to take a set of frontrunners and a wast gate in my luggage so the "to have list" is getting a bit shorter allthough it is getting longer due to all the great stuff I saw in the Us.

Put the hairdryer and the wastegate together so they could get to know each other ;D

Made some braces to stiffen the front as it was moving all over. They are made of treaded steel but I am making them of aluminium eventually.

Mocked up the wheelybars to see how it would look like.I don,t know if I need them but I had the chance to buy them so I will see if they are nessesary( let's hope I have the power to lift the front ;)).

Now it is time to deal with all the little details and to start working on the engine.

Thanks the logos are coming back but a little different and as for the rest of the car will stay as is for next year because I want to be able to make changes if nessecary.
When the car is dialed in it will receive its paint which will be involving candys metalflake and goldleafe ;)

I will be running my old 2.4 engine nex year with a turbo.
And I am planning to build a brand new engine.Again typ4 but with pauter heads.
It probably will be 86x103 which is close to 2.9 liters.
The plan is to have the case machined for 6 studs per cilinder and for typ 1 lifters.

The rest of the enginespecs will be determend when I have contact and advise from the enginebuilder as I need some one to do the machining and to help me put it all together.

I am running a renault 25 UN1 gearbox.
This was the only gearbox that was affordable at the time I build the brown Tiki last year.Robert Jongen used to run one and it was able to hold around 400bhp without breaking.

Wow thats interesting, this is a 5 speed box right? So did you have to get an adapter plate or a new bell housing made to mate up to the engine bolt pattern? How easy was it to adapt the cable shifter? And does the gearbox rotate and drive the right way from standard or did anything have to be done like flipping the diff?

Regards,
Rob.

Hi yes it's a 5 speed box but I am not using 5th.
The diff has to be flipped wich is fairly straight forward if you know how to set preload and how to shim the diff.
I removed the original bellhousing of the renault gearbox then fitted an adapterplate so I could use the bellhousing of a typ25 bus.My 2.4 bolts up to this belhousing and I can use the normal beetle clutchcable set up.
Also if I have to go to heavier pressureplates I can easily change the clutch to a hydraulic set up.
As a shifter I am using the shifter of a 90s To#¤ta because it has an arm that moves forward when you move the stick to the left. This way when I move the shifter to the left I pull a cable which controls the gearselector for the 1st and 2nd gear.
Í will make some pictures this week to make things more asy to understand.

For Prowagen:
This is the shifter I am using,

The lever going in the tunnel is for operating the gearselector.
Here is the nose from te gearbox,

The cable is not yet connected cause I am searching for a good cable to use.It will probable be a throttlecable from an outboard engine. ;)

Hi Michael, I think the floor plates for the cage can be bent only if they are welded in! But you will have to check the MSA rule book, perhaps one of the Outlaws can help here???

Rob.

Worked on the rear fenders as they had the egg taillights instead of the heart taillights.

I took the slicks of to put them in a dark warm place for winter. Now it shows how much narrower the rear is with stock wheels.

I am taking all the things that are ready home to paint all the insides of the panels semi gloss black like in the old days. The gar gets pretty naked.

I will take the body of the floorpan one more time in a few weeks to tidy things up.

Thanks Hans ;D

Started modifiyng the rear suspension today as I wasn't happy with the current set-up.

First I removed the lower shockmount on the  trailingarm.

Then I made a bracket for the topmount.

I bolted everything together again to see where the new lower mount will go.

Hopefully I get the other side done this week then I can add some more bars to the cage to make it more rigid.

For now I have a set of 6x26 MH slicks but maybe I have to go 8,5x26.
I am going to order some new rear wheels from Greg Weld with a 4"backspace.If my meassurements are correct this is going to fit.
I have someone making  a set of hubs like the porsche 944 but with chevy pcd and from 7075 aluminium.

Are they press in studs? I would be a bit concerned about that personally. I've had them strip on me before and that was on a steel hub not alloy. The RLR/Jaycee ones have screw in studs which is just a standard Moroso part and then Shawn Geers ones have the same but he also offers a upgrade to the Mark Williams larger screw in stud which is really nice. I guess at the end of the day it's still an alloy hub but I personally feel safer with the screw in stud  :)

Good work though dude, car is looking good!

Are you going to run without frontbrakes? I mean with a turbo engine you will reach quite some speed. I know that you are planning of using a brake chute but still?

Hey Steve, Yes they are press-in studs as Mycha allready told.
I think the press-in studs are safer then the screw-in.I used to drive my daily with the screw-in and they would come loose thightening the bolts.
I was told that screw-ins are not allowed for racing because of that.

The alloy used is 7075 grade 1 which is the toughest alloy around. The gold shine it has is from the amount of titanium in the alloy.
The original porsche hubs are cast steel and about half the thickness of my aluminium hubs just to be safe ;).
I think it is all a matter of trial and error but I am pretty sure it will hold, thanks for the comment anyway.

I've seen screw in studs that have a shoulder on the back to tighten up against - Wilwood brake kits for big V8 stuff use them. There wouldn't be the room inside a drum for them, but there might be here.

Post by: tikimadness on March 04, 2009, 14:51:44 pm
@ Neil I didn't know that but I will try it with the press-in first. If something goes wrong I can allways change them.
Will keep an eye on them regularly.

Michael

All of the Strange and Mark Williams axles/brakes are screw in and so perfectly fine for racing. They just need to be correctly torqued and they should be fine. I have torqued mine to 80ft/lb with a dab of Loctite threadlock for good measure. My wheels have been torqued to 80ft/lb and there is no movement on the studs. I guess we could compare notes and get a real measure of whats working and what's not.  :)

Steve

Work started on the engine.I was going to put the turbo on my old 2.4 typ 4 but to do it properly I had to open the case so I thought why not take a new case.
Now I don't have the holes from the porschefan as I don't want to use that.
It is a fresh case that hasn't been overhauled before.

I got it opened up for 103 mm cilinders and alignedbored.
Also I got it rebushed for typ 1 lifters instead of the typ 4 lifters.

The case also got pins on the middle bearing to prevent it from flexing.

There is still a lot to do before the case and heads are ready but hopefully it will all be ready before BUG-IN3.

The case has to be cleared for the crank and a custom cam has to be made to clear the rods.

Michael

Sorry to put a spanner it the works Michael , but I thought they painted the inside's of old gassers back to limit glare from the sun which could put you off your concentration on the strip ahead and your gauges .
Surely if you paint the dash anything other than black it would be at odds with the whole point of a black interior  ???. Just my 2 cents  ::)

Did you have pics on the mods you made to mount them?

I had the chance to take a set of frontrunners and a wast gate in my luggage so the "to have list" is getting a bit shorter allthough it is getting longer due to all the great stuff I saw in the Us.

Not much to show cause I am having some backproblems but I tried to do some little stuff like fitting the fender beating.

And I removed a trailling arm so I can narrow it as soon as my back allows it.
I want to narrow it about 29 mm which  is the maximum as far as I know.

Oooh and I put a guarddog in my Garage when I am not around ;D

Narrowed the traillling arm a bit more and now it is spot on.
The inside
(http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/80667.jpg)

The inside will get some metal to strenghten it.

There is space between the tire and fender.

I also fitted the offset irs bolts from Marco and they are a great way to adjust the wheels.

Got the final parts of the engine back today.
Decided to have the case machined for type 1 lifters because of the spring pressure I need to run.Trying to keep things light weight.
Thats why I also swapped my connecting rods for a refurbished set from Ahnendorp in germany. They are tested and 600 gram llighter then originals.

I will be using the same original crank I bought some 15 years ago.It is a non counterweighted original german crank.

If not, that is ALOT!

No it isn't  I think it will be strong enough ;)And this is just the run in engine.
I will use hthis engine for testing so I don't want to spend all my money on it.

Plus I think that an original crank(type4)is stronger/better then a whole lot of aftermarket stuff out there ;)

Started with the intake for the turbosystem.
I allready made an intake but reading on the web learned me that I could make a better system.
I really like the plenums Marty makes and tekken runs on his car but I cant afford that so that is why I want to make my own set.

The previous set was made by me but I had some one else do the welding cause I couldn't.
That's why i booked eveningschool to learn tigwelding. ;)

I've going to school for a few weeks now and I started getting the feeling and i bought my own welder(secondhand)

Thanks Martin.
Been working on the fuelline.I t took a long time to figure out how I would route the line but I think I got it right.
The mainline goes through the passengerside heaterchannel connected by bulkheadcouplings.

I made the pick up on the tank bigger going from AN 8 to AN 10.
This because I think the engine wants lots of fuel and since I will be runnig E85 that means about 30% more then regular fuel.

Yes I am finaly working on the engine together with Henri(mrHorsepower).Although he is doing the most work ;D.
I took the tranny apart to put the spool in and found out that the diff that was inside allready acted like a spool because it was rocksolid and I couldn't turn it.
I cleaned the trannycase and put it in the washer to get rid of all the grease.
I want to paint the case so it won't get dirty again and it is easier to clean.

The engine case is cleaned for the last time and the crank has been polished so it can be closed next week.

Aside from mounts and adapting the Bus bellhousing.

They sound reasonably strong, but are not popular here in north America.

I've seen this done on driveshafts on rally cars (old escorts!) and also on V8 propshafts but never in VW circles - seeing as how I'm looking at buying some shorter IRS driveshafts its piqued my interest! what are peoples opinions on doing this? How was it done Michael, are they notched and welded underneath the sleeve, then the sleeve welded over the top or???? Do you need to have them balanced or checked for runout?

You might have a problem bleeding the brakes.  The thread for 3/16" inverted flare, is 3/8"-24.....maybe that's where you got crossed up.  3/16" inverted flare is for 3/16" OD tubing.  Why didn't you keep the fittings metric??  Just use the correct 10mmx1.0 tube nuts, and flare a bubble flare.   ;D

The handbrake has a 7/16" inlet and a 3/8" outlet.I tried to use a metric inverted flare but it didn"t fit that's when I found out it wasn't metric ;)

7/16"-24 would be the thread size, used for 1/4" tubing.
 If you ever need metric tube nuts, I carry them in stock @ work.  I have 10mmx1.0, 10mmx1.25, 10mmx1.5, & 12mmx1.0.   ;)

As being impatient I don't want to wait for people making parts for me.I have been waiting for a set of plastic headlight lenses for 3 months so now I decided to give it a try myself instead of wait a few more months.

I took a original lens and glued it on a piece of wood.I then made a surround on the piece of wood and filled it with pouring plaster.
I will let it dry till tomorrow and then I will get the wood form the plaster and I will have a mould hopefully.
I bought some 0.75mm clear polycarbonate and i plan on using a paintstripper to heat the poly and let it take the form of the mould.

Will see if it works on monday if not more waiting for parts ;)

No headlights for now cause the poly will not get soft enough. My oven is not up to the job so I am trying other options.

Started with the exhaust today.
Got my spare engine case and a set of borrowed heads.Together with some plastic pipes as spacers I made a mock up of the witht of the engine.
I put the wheelybars on to make sure they still fit when the exhaust is on and found out they where in the way for my first plan.I wanted the exhaust to go up on the tranny side but this is way too much work so I decided to go up on the conventional way.

One side is tacked and the other side is planned for tuesday.

As may have noticed progress has been really slow last months. There is a good reason for that.
I have som other priorities:Making a babyroom ;D ;D
It took a lot of time and effort but now my wife is finally pregnant.

I'll continue working on the car in a few weeks when all my duties are done and I worked all the lists my wife made ;)

BUT back to the car;
Robert Jongen got me the parts to redo my steering set up.
It is all mocked up ready for welding.I have some spacers made which are ready by the end of the week so the uniballs can move without hitting the spindles.

I also got a package from Simon from the paintbox

Hey Tiki daddy,

Good to see you working on the car again. 8)
Isn't better to place the rod that comes from the steeringbox on the underside of the spindle, this why the long rod is horizontal.

Cheers Paul.

Yes I thought about that but the rod is rubbing the framehead if i do so ;).
John is making a 20mm spacer to go between the two uniballs.

I think the baby will win ;)The date my wife is expecting is 21st of juli.

Little progress,
I had the cncwizzard make some spacers to mount the steeringarms to the spindels.

Fitted the lot and it seems to work well. The steering is lighter then I expected.
I need to get some high grade bolts this week to fasten the rods and the steering is finished.

Made a throttle pedal so the cable hooks up on the passenger side of the car so I don't brake the cable with my heavy right food.

Also made a new bracket for the clutchslave which should be a lot stronger so it won't bent and replaced the plastic line with a steel one.

Hey Michael,

My 63 Ghia will be in Holland in June/July.  It will have my Turbo kit from AJ Sim on it.  So when the time comes I will call you and meet up to say hello and get some tips from you on a good setup here

So it's been a long time since my last post but a lot has happend
I made it to Bug-in and had the chance to do some runs .
They weren't to bad but I expected a little more.
Found out that the car is to light in the front. In third gear it wants to go all directions but straight.

Also the front wasn't strong enough so by the time I was full in third gear the wind pushed the front down hitting the ground and bending it so the front fenders touched the wheels  :(

So now I'm going to move the battery to the front and stiffen things up.

My best time was a 12.60 not the 11 I want for now but I think it will come in the future.

I also put the car in the dyno and managed to make one run.

299.9 bhp @6500 rpm and 367nm
This was a run where it leaned out in the secondary step of the holley.
The holley I'm using has a vacuum secondary so now I have to put a metering block in it to make the settings ajustable.

At least you're starting with something nice & light Michael, you can put the strength (and weight) back in only where its needed. I had a look at your car at EBI and it looked great. Sounds like it was a scary ride!

What was your terminal speed btw?

Here goes, after 2 earlier tries on the dyno i finally got the carb to function like it should.
`Did a lot of runs and after turning up the boost to 1.3 bar the clutch started to slip with 385bhp and 425 nm ;D

going to try to keep it straight @ bitburg this weekend

It's been a long time since I updated this topic.
I only made one pass in Bitburg and it turn out to be on 3 cylinders .I had a valve seat gone loose >:( 20 + pulls on the dyne with no problem and on the last meeting of the year shit happens.

I took the engine apart and only one intake valve was slightly bent. I'm having all the seats renewed this winter to make sure it won't happen again.

I brought the car over to the Uk last week to have the cage redone and tagged so I should be able to race everywhere.
The car is at Jim Smith's shop right now for the cage and a bunch of other modifications and I'm very curious how it will turn out.

So no one would put it against you if you put one of these on the side, some of the technical amongst you would insist on there being one either side for weight distribution.

Progress is slow cause I didn't think welding in a few(120) tabs would take so much time ;D
Made a mould out of an old piece of lexan to see how it will look once it's ready
.(http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/tikimadness/480222_391730244194408_100000723060483_1223221_1403591617_n.jpg)

Now that the tabs in the body are  in I started on the doors.

The welding is getting better again. It really makes a difference when you don't do it on a daily basis.

Drivers side door is done. Now waiting for a new batch of tabs ;)

Had some time to work on the car today,
Welded and cleaned the floor and put some primer on.
And a coat of flat black
(http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/tikimadness/580613_400893313278101_100000723060483_1247307_754823810_n.jpg)

Now it's time to start placing some parts in the car. Will change the entire set-up to EFI. With a water to air intercooler.
A friend of mine is lasercuting the water tank as it will be a custom made one. As soon as that is ready and I have some other parts I can see where to route all the lines as there is a lot more plumbing then before. ;)

Question: will a front tire fit between the front tubes in any angle? If so you can be sure it will if you crash at high speed and your legs will be the first to notice.

Hey BB we took care of that by adding extra tubes. The picture doesn't show that very clearly   ;)

Micheal,

I think what Kalle is refering to is shown here,it looks possible for the wheel/tyre to be pushed back into the footwell/pedal area, and yes I know its the correct side I drew on,not the LHS ;D

The crossbar should protect me from a wheel getting in. You guys made a good point even if you drew it on the wrong side of the car ;)

Will have a good look on how to upgrade or change it.

Thats the 1st time ever I used "paint"  I think I can make the car yellow given enough time :D

Anyway, looking at it a single bar down from the existing intersection to the old pan/body mount that takes the 2 m10 bolts would be enough and help secure the pan as well?

cheers richie

Not much done lately as life gets in the way but I got my front beam back from the blaster and gave it a coat of black paint.
Front is now well on it's way to look like it is supposed to do.

It's been a while but I'm still working on the car. Searching for parts consumes a lot of time and changing my mind every day doesn't help either ;)
But I decided to ditch the renault gearbox and put a 091 in. Got a lead on a really good one ;D ;D.
I'm also going efi so I bought an IC and have to make a new intake and exhaust so why not make everything a little bigger and get a bigger turbo.

Sold all the draw through stuff so there is no turning back now ;D

Had Jim(cotsweld race cars ) modify the car to fit a 091 gearbox with an mse shifter.

He also repositioned the turbo cause I wasn't happy with where it sat.
I'll make some pictures of the details of Jim's work as it is really like artwork. ;D
I had to cut up the IC cause the routing would be terrible.

And put on a throttle body
(http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww136/tikimadness/IMG_2861.jpg)
I started working on the car again and it takes a lot of time and efford from me but it slowly comes together now. Only 2 big things that I need now and that's a gearbox and the EFI.
Efi will be kms (kronenburg management) Decided to use this system as a friend of mine makes the software ;)

Some people pointed to me that the front didn't have enough tubes so I had Jim add some more.

Been putting in some late hours last week as I got my gearbox now. First thing to do is make it shift, due to the funny car cage I had to make a pivot to re align the rods.

It looks like it will work all I need now is the "forks" that attach to the gearbox.
I then started working on the Co2 launcher.
That's mostly done also.

finally I put my tires on the new rims.

Been a while since I updated my topic but that doesn't mean nothing happend. ;)

I've been converting the car to Efi which took me longer then I thought but it's almost done now.

Then I placed a set of Geers front brakes

I decided to fit 8 injector 4 x 1210 cc and 4 x 2200 cc.

Thank you for your update Michael. Looking really good. I hope you do not mind me asking but are you going to run on methanol since you are going to use 8 injectors?

Best rgs

Slowly making progress,
started to put all the fluids in. Got a vacuum leader but the brake system seams to be too complex and I need to do it all style with some help from a friend.

Got one door in and finished and need to go on with the other one but want to do the really important things first. The things that will make it a driver.

Almost done with the scoop, window fits now how I want it so need to make a final one and attach the scoop to it.

Made the rear window removable to gain easy acces to the throttle body.

I've seen your car twice recently and took a good while to take in all the details.

First time was at Cotsweld when I dropped my car off and the second was at Drag Day, and I must say I'm lovin it !!

Much more to do before it's running/racing ?

Thanks
Darren

No not really just a lot of odds and ends,
Trying to find time to pull the engine out next week and service it, then it's cleaning all tanks and lines and put a map in the ecu and see if it will fire,

After a few days at the track at SCC and helping Richie and now with Kalle in his cabin the much needed motivation is back.  Been talking bout what to do with the engine so once I'm back home from holiday I will get my ass in gear and order the parts and get it done in order to fire up the engine and finally go racing next year. ;)

Actually it ran at DDD in 2011 :)

No the car won't be at DDD cause I've got to have  a set of Pistons made first.  The engine is apart now and almost everything looks perfect except it could use new piston rings.  Since the Pistons are old(20 years) and look like it's better to retire them I'm replacing them with something more modern.
