Title: New Motor for my 56
Post by: Larry S on May 03, 2020, 20:11:49 pm
So I am getting closer to building the motor for my 56. I currently have

Old Berg 1.5 in merge header with dual muffs
48's redone by Gary Berg
Vertex magneto recently redone by them
autocraft 1;4 rockers
deep sump
New set of Steve Tims stage 2 heads on order, should have in approx. 2 weeks with 48 manifolds.

looking to buy soon
78.4 crank
90.5 pistons, looking at stroker pistons and short rods to keep the motor width down
aftermarket rods
Engle FK-10 cam
new case
Light flywheel
straight cut cam gear

just got my new trans from Dave Folts, 3:88 R&P, super beetle main shaft, 1.58 3rd, 1.21 4th, trans has all the goodies

does this cam sound like the right choice for the combo I am working towards? I know there are so many to chose from and a lot of variables come into play. it will be a weekend car driven on the street.
if I run a stock length rod on the 78.4 with the stroker pistons will this work out ok? I am thinking 9-9.5 compression.
Thanks for your input, car is basically done and I hope to get it going soon.
Thanks,
Larry

i would use a FK-43 cam, maybe a little less hp, but more torque (i.e. drivability)

Mark Herbert was a great advocate of the Fk10 in a stock geared trans. I've no idea what cam you should run, but with the gears you've got, maybe the Fk10 isn't the best choice?
For what it's worth, my 2007 has an Fk87 in it, with stock 1300 ratio gears and the cam is too much really. It's good fun to blast it, but it's not that fuel efficient or particularly pleasant to potter about with. If it gets rebuilt before the end of the world, it'll get an Fk10.

I’ve got an IDA fed 2110 with an FK10 and 091 box in my baywindow and I bloody love it! Drives nice about town and will pull hard to 7000 rpm. Very different application To yours I know but I love it  ;D

Thanks Karl, love the FK43, the more I drive it the more I love it. it pulls hard but also has so much low end torque. Bill Rodgers talked me into it along with your recommendation. In fact, Bill supplied me the cam and lifters. it sure is fun to drive!

i had mexx design me a FK-43 clone with assymetric ramps and slightly more lift for my 2276, i hope it is just as fun
