Title: Late drum on short axle
Post by: leec on May 27, 2020, 14:02:41 pm
Hi guys,

I have a pair of late beetle drums (Porsche pattern) drums that I would like to fit on early beetle short axles.

I know the drum needs machining as the splined portion is longer on a later drum, but can’t find my notes for how much is taken off. Sure it’s inner and outer that needs machining.

Anyone help?

Thanks,
Lee

Machine 7 (where the drums came from) replied to an email I sent asking them the above question.

You remove 3mm from the inside of the drum, and 13mm on the end where the hubnut goes.

Thanks,
Lee

Yes, 3mm inner and 13mm outer, but you also either need to drill a hole in the drum or in the backplate to be able to get to the adjusters, as on early cars the hole was in the drum and on late cars it was x2 in the backplate, with using the late drums you are removing the ability to adjust the shoes...

Yep, thank you. I am going to use the later back plates and internals.
