Case is brand new.
Its faulty.
It should be 22mm thrust face to thrust face
Its reading 21.97
The New bearing reads 22.123
The difference is 0.153
Which is making the new bearing loose in the saddle.
With a solid shim pack there is end float caused by the movement of the bearing.
I'm not building it with this issue as it will only get worse over time
Customer is pxxxxd

When I put the spec into lime bugs site it comes  up with a part number for 1mm thrust
Standard case 0.25 crank, hopefully it's cosha

Those bearings are out of specs and it's seen more and more. Sometimes it necessary to used
2 or 3 sets of bearings to get one set that fits. Also rod bearings need attention to the tang and
radius cut (or lack of radius cut).

As Rolf says, there is a very big quality difference in stock today
If I were you, I'd complain about them

I have a nos set of 0.25 but I do not know if it is 22 or 21 mm

Micke you said you have to shuffle around the bearings to find a matching set.
Which ones are usually the ones causing the problem ? The split bearing ?
I am rebuilding my 2017 ccm for the moment , got a set of silverline bearings and gonna measure them before installing .
Street used bus engine .
I try to get to 0,05 mm if possible

Case has gone back to supplier along with the bearing. There going to swap the crappy oil pick up pipe too for a German one.If they can get it out.

I've often thought it risky buying any vw Part. New or used.

There's always something not right when building  these engines.

Now you misunderstood me Sam
As Rolf said, you have to buy several sets
To find one that is good in tolerances
An example mainbearing 1 from set n1 bearing 2 from set 3
3 bearings from batch 2 and so on With the day's quality of bearings
I'm looking all over the world to find old bearings
That it has become so
is one does not want to pay for quality

Hello
as previous gentlemen stated, you have to be very suspicious about bearings, and check and check again, and yes maybe you have to test more sets to get the desired tolerance on every bearing position, especailly the rod bearings find to be real problem, anyway concerning the last bearing -to the thrust side- we -I mean with my machinist- always get the 2mm version and we cut back on the lathe what is needed so as to make it fit tight as we like it, I know, an extra job but at least we're sure we dont search for another set only becuase of this issue and also we get the tight fit we need there, hope this helps a little

I was Going to do what you suggested with a 1mm extra thrust bearing but the bearings are getting hard to find, so the owner sent it back to the supplier, thus giving him the problem.

WTF.
I've got this new case back from the UK vw supplier/builder, not naming names, it's not fair, mistakes happen, but the main bearing is still loose. Plus the oil pick up pipe has been changed for a German one as requested but it's 99% blocked. Water won't pass through it. Good job I checked it and didn't just build it.

sorry to hear this, especially the pick up issue, when you say the bearing is still loose you mean "thrustwise" -like when you install it on half the case for test- or you dont get the "clamp" you need when you torque the 2 halfes? sorry I missed this, if the first is the case probably not done properly, if the second is the case maybe you have to share the torque values you use? i mean you and the shop that did the bearings, maybe he uses more torque on the six central studs to get his tolerances, just a thought BUT if this is the case he should have warned you, to use specific torque values

The play is present when only hand fitting the thrust bearing into the saddle. There is end float present. Slight back n Forth movement of the new bearing in the new case. A 22mm saddle needs a 22mm bearing at least. Better if the bearing is a thou or so smaller so its snug.
How can a 14mm oil pipe block up... I have my own idea, but its not for here.
