Looking good!! When can we expect this car to be done ;D

How is the fuel filter serviced after the tunnel is sealed?

is the car injected or are you running a regulator that has return line to tank?

Post by: danny gabbard on January 26, 2008, 01:33:24 am
I might fuel inject, but ran two lines just in case. also theres bulk head fitting on both ends, can always cap the line i dont use.

sure looks cleaner than my anaconda of AN-8 hose forced thru tunnel. Nice thought put into your setup.

That's a great and flexible way to plumb a pan.  Sadly, out east here where it is not as dry it might be hard to keep sealed off from the elements.

thanks for sharing. Just when you thing you have seen it all.......you show this. After fighting my way through my tunnel, this is a very smart way to do it. Lots of spot welds to drill huh? Andy specs on the car? Do tell. vish

Wow that is such a cool idea! What do you use to bolt the pan belly back to the car, do the bolts stick out into the passenger compartment?

Thanks,
Rob.

Hi lee, The center section I had to buy. From a off road supply place in anaheim called mekensies. Spelling could be off. But I Got it there and cut the sides down so I could fit in to stock torsion houseing. Then boxed and plated in to kind of hide. The broached peices were a bitch, Real tight and I had to use valve lapping compound on the splines and drive torsion bars in and out about 10-15 times to free them up. The reason so I could get them out of car someday if needed. They were fricken tight

Awesome work Danny.I've been a professional painter for around 15 years and its always cool to see how other people do it.
Just wondered if you could run through a few of your prep techniques. What grade papers, what materials etc?
Just out of curiosity really. If you want to keep your secrets or its a bit to much like boring techy type stuff for the forum please shoot me P.M.
Again inspiring work,thanks Jonathan.

Thanks everybody. Jonathan after all the metalfinishing was completed I primed with DTM by valspar, about 5-6 coats, Then blocked with 80 then 120 grit reprimed 4-5 coats and reblocked 120-220 and primed just bare metal spots. Then sanded with 220 and 320. Sealed and painted with 3-4 coats of concept 1 by PPG. Let set for a week and blocked with 400 wet and resprayed a couple of coats of color and 3 coats of clear. Next I will sand with 1000 and 1500 and rub out. I am starting to get excited now, First time I have put this much effort into one of my own paint jobs in about 20 years. Thanks again everybody for all the encourageing words. I forgot how much I hate sanding. Real fun sanding with wet feet in 30-40 degree weather.

Doing a little last bit of welding before paint prep on body. 1st getting rid of ignition switch hole for locking steering colum. 2nd welding radio hole up and fixing rubber seal channel. First I measured the hole and punched a slug to hammer into hole.

So... how do you sand inside the vents under the rear window?
I've seen so many "nice" cars over the years but that area was overlooked / ignored / forgotten.

You're crazy. Just kidding... hey, Dave R. brought up a good point; what your plans for the intake vents behind the vertical grille under the rear window? Looking forward to seeing if you have any tricks for that area.

I say you you mud em up like that front 1/4 and apron you butched up with bondo, probably wouldnt take more than a gallon or 2 ;D ;D ;D

Title: Re: my latest project 1962 COW-LOOK bug
Post by: danny gabbard on April 09, 2010, 00:53:36 am
Its not really that bad behind the vents, I had the shell of the body wallnut shell blasted before I started. So its  pretty clean. But yes if something has been painted many times, It would be very hard to clean up.

Well all flat panels have been blocked with 80-120 grit and everything else sanded with 220. And now reprimer just flat panels and then unmask and spot prime all bare metal. all steps get guild coated between sanding steps.

Well all flat panels have been blocked with 80-120 grit and everything else sanded with 220. And now reprimer just flat panels and then unmask and spot prime all bare metal. all steps get guild coated between sanding steps.

Jeebus...nice work on the filler Mr. Bondo Bucket!

Danny, before you button up that body for paint, install a '67 vert mirror assembly in the upper header... I wish I did...

Hmmm, no vents on the dash.... where have I seen that before.

Title: Re: my latest project 1962 COW-LOOK bug
Post by: danny gabbard on May 06, 2010, 03:23:48 am
Now I cut on the scribe line between holes and grind and file . Then with ring completely held in I hammer the 3/16 flange over ring. If you do not have alot of body hammers , You can use a peice of round bar for corners and just about any hammer for the flats.

Hi tom, You can use a peice of 3/4 round bar and a flat faced body hammer if you got one. Start on the flats first and then the corner. Go around 4-5 times and finish in the corners , It will pull everything tight when finishing in corners. and dont over hammer !!!!!!!!!!!!  And thanks nico

what do you think of the water base paints, had my elky painted by one day in water, I think it looks good after a little over a year (and watching it drive by while standing on the curb).  But I would hesitate to have a car that I'm not going to drive daily (expensive paint job) done with water.  When I go to do the ghia next spring I'd like to know my options here in cali.

There is + and - to water base stuff, But I havent used any and do not know how it holds up. But the clean up is great and you can recoat any time, Yoy dont need to sand if let set for more than 6-8 hours. You can spray a coat go on vacation for a month come back and recoat.  I used it back in the mid 80s , hated it then but things have up graded since then. Plus there will be old painters if people started useing more . In the last year or so I have heard of 3 great painters die. from cancer. Jim there is a artical in the new hot rod mag on water based stuff.

Awesome progress Danny.Just a quick question if you don't mind,How do you find the gloss level holds up when you clear over single stage?I painted a golf of mine using that technique years ago and it seemed to haze up a bit.

On the subject of water based paint,we've been using it in the u.k for 10-15 years.(solvent is technically only for classics and commercial)
Its only the basecoat that is water based so you still get a solvent primer beneath it and a solvent clear on top of it to seal it in.
If anything the water based base coats have a better lay-down and atomisation with difficult metallics such as light blues, golds, silvers etc.The only real downer is the longer flash off times between coats, but newer booths are fitted with specific water based drying systems which has made this a bit quicker.
What I'm trying to say is don't panic guys,it takes a bit of getting used to but it won't wash off in the rain! ;D

Cheers everybody, Now I am fired up, I'm getting pulled in two directions, My car and customeer cars. I started clearing over single stage while wet some time ago, It seems to hold up. I sprayed my old 67 that brian plummer owns now about 10 years ago and it still looks pretty good and before that I had a bay window double cab that I did the same and held up. But paint has a way of breaking your heart some times. I have heard lots of good about water base, But would like to paint something that was not that important and see how it holds up here in nevada. Again thanks everybody

I've seen that on my car which my brother used to own - all cellulose, base and clear - the clear just hazed up in moist weather. It made a dark red car look pink... The disappointment with the paint job was enough to turn my brother away from old cars for good - 14 months restoring the car with my Dad and I, then within three months the paint went bad. He parked the car and left it, it got used for maybe 3 years in the last 13. :-\

Did we make the mistake of letting the colour go hard, then colour sanding with 1200, then clear over the top? Was there enough of a key for the clear to bite into? I'm repainting the car next week (just a 20ft job!) and I'm not sure if I need to take off the clear coats and get back to solid paint?  ???

Sorry for the hi-jack Danny, your car looks awesome!

next time your down, I'll drive my elky which has a cheapo one day paint job.  don't look at the quality of bodywork etc. (it's a one day daily driver) just the paint.  It has been a year and a half outside car and she still shines great, which is why I asked your opinion.  the ghia is on deck.

My eyes are old, so Danny... are those real EMPI 5 spokes that are sand blasted? I hope so... 'cause they sure look great on those pics. Car's coming together very nicely.
Thanks fred, They are NOS that I cleaned with aluma-prep and filed, sanded and had hector at al-brite polishing, redo the lips. Then had a guy machine some new caps that I Had  ingraved GAB-FAB. Spent lots of time on those silly wheels Thanks again for noticeing.

Now for the reason to get it off the ground ! I needed to get to level so I could polish paint around bumper areas, Where after bumpers are mounted will be hard to get buffer into and rub paint.

Title: Re: my latest project 1962 COW-LOOK bug
Post by: danny gabbard on October 24, 2010, 04:47:45 am
Now a few shots of bumpers mounted. And yes I know the rear over rider tubes are 67 and the car is a 62. If you new how many hours I hammered and metalfinshed these bumpers you would use them to, Please look close at them if you ever see car. After striping chrome off the parts they where spray with lay-out dye and a file ran over all surfaces till real straight and all peices where fit and gapped very closely. Even after they where copper plated I got back and block sanded then sent to hector at al-brite polishing, Hectors one of the best polishers I have ever met. After all that back to get plated. Back to why theres 67 overriders, I am not going to do the car after all.

Don't mean to be a spoiler, but you know this limits the function of having a dual circuit M/C, right?
Someone needs to make a stealth reservoir with two chambers and two feed hoses to provide fluid to each port. In case of catastophic failure of one circuit, there would still be a supply of fluid to the remaining circuit.
Otherwise, outstanding attention to detail and craftsmanship. Well done Danny.

Something like that? : ;) (not my work btw, but good stuff!)

Right, I finally done something thats worth posting up!  ;D

The first part of this was siamising two brake fluid resevoirs together, as the car will be duel circuit, and I didn't want to fit a later plastic reservoiur.

I was actually really pleased with how this looked.  :)

Next up was to cut the wheel well to accept it, and adjust the pressing. I was really nervous about doing as if I messsed it up their was no going back!  :'(

Anyway here's how it turned out! I think i'm happy with it!  ;D

Thanks for your input and I see what your talking about, But I dont see this part failing and starveing any fluid. If I'm correct duel circuit meaning theres a plunger for each front and rear brakes that fluid is being pushed. instead of one plunger for both front and rear,Thats what should be of concern in brake fluid being lost.

Title: Re: my latest project 1962 COW-LOOK bug

The system is a failsafe in the event of some extreme failures and will probably never be tested in real life, so it's splitting hairs anyway :).
The idea behind the extra capacity of a separete reservoir is to ensure there is a adequate supply of fluid for the remaining good circuit. In your design, if there is a failure of one circuit there is little fluid in reserve for the remaining circuit.
I think a small improvement would be to put the Y right behind the reservoir so that you at least had the pipes and hoses to retain a small supply of fluid for each circuit indepenant of the other.

I suppose you're right.
As long as there is only a failure in one of the circuits i.e. front or rear, then the other should retain the fluid already in the brake lines and still function.
Normally dual circuits are basically two independent systems with two reservoirs just contained together.

A long standing design philosophy is Form follows Function. If you're going to change or modify any system then it should perform as good or better than the system it replaces.
Then make it look purdy ;).

I think on the '67s they had a common reservoir with a little "dam" in it to separate the circuits. They could share the fluid up to the level of the dam.

I just made due with what I had. This deal is very low risk , you could probably cork the end of tube and drive it a hundred thousand miles and never have a problem. And if everybody followed the form and function rule you would not see 145s in the front of a lowered vw . Sorry if I sound like I am ranting.

Title: Re: my latest project 1962 COW-LOOK bug
Post by: 61SNRF on November 19, 2010, 04:16:16 am
No, you're right. I knew someone would say something so I threw it out there.
It might have something to do with the original Federal Safety requirements that there was a complete separate system for each circuit. In actuality, I see little need for a large reserve of fluid in a drum brake car. Disc brake cars may require a little more reserve due to pad wear displacing the fluid.
What I would like to see is an early reservoir split apart and a divider inserted down the middle with two outlets on the bottom. This would be a stealth way to hide the dual reservoirs.
Running 145's is a little different than adapting a late model brake system to an early car too. I still believe in the three F's.

DG,

Awesome work on the details!
That fuel pump mount is the TITS! :o ... super clean. And, the stock switch is the only thing to use ... back when I built my '67 race car I used lighted knobs (like emergency/defroster(green means GO!) flasher) so I'd know when everything was on; one for the ignition and one for fuel ... worked GREAT.
Also love the knob for the main cutoff ... just SUPER clean, as always.
TxT

you can barely see the green lensed knobs ...π

Title: Re: my latest project 1962 COW-LOOK bug
Post by: danny gabbard on January 17, 2011, 19:54:37 pm
Thanks tom and chris, Tom the process is called hammer forming. You make a pattern and transfer and cut out to blocks of alum the shape of part to be, Can also be made of hardwood ! I usually only use hard wood on soft materials like alum , brass , copper. So now blocks are cut and holes drilled for bolting blocks together, Same holes in this case that pump will mount to. Now add a peice of material that part is going to be made into and scribe around blocks with dividers to get the sides or material to be hammerd down, and go make parts. DO NOT try and hammer complete in one hit, Go around several times turning edge very slow, So material dos not ball up. Again thanks Tom, Or brother of JACK ! That shot glass is working out fine!

Title: Re: my latest project 1962 COW-LOOK bug
Post by: danny gabbard on March 11, 2011, 00:51:17 am
Well as we can all see, They are a bit short on the ends!!! So first thing is to make a pattern of what there suppose be. So I made alum ends and trimed them to fit, Later I will overlay them on added areas welded to running boards. And trim and turn a new 90 degree flange on all the ends.

Title: Re: my latest project 1962 COW-LOOK bug

Ya, I got lucky and the rubber mat is a little long, I am going to give them about a 1/2 border and paint the running board ends body color. The reason is hopefully the gap between fender and runningboard will show up better, Kinda like a 35-37 ford coupe

Hi Danny

I've been looking at the mod you did to the pan (removable tunnel section). I've started building my new project and have been thinking about adding a similar mod but was wondering if you lost much torsional strength when doing this? I've a spare pan that I've taken the complete lower panel off to use for spare sections, right from front to the rear of the frame horms and the remaining tunnel section is extremely flimsy now (although it does not have pan sections in it and, as I say it's the complete panel rather than removing part of it as you did).

Thanks Paul

Hi Fabs, Not to much been going on with the car. Got seat frames ready to paint. Getting ready to start mocking up motor. Here is a couple shots of the decklid I building for it. The vents will have stainless screen inserts that will bolt in from the backside when finished

Here are a few sources I found with a quick search:

http://www.accmats.com/Products/Flooring/Material.aspx

http://www.perfectfit.com/36927/Auto-Carpets.html

http://site.qualitycarinterior.com/custom-color.html

That color reminds me of the upholstery in a '69 Indy 500 edition Camaro ... that surely wouldn't be hard to come by.
They called it red or medium red I believe:

Lookin' Good, DG!
