Title: This space reserved for D.K.K. club photos... dig?
Post by: Rennsurfer on February 13, 2008, 21:22:37 pm
Hey, DEEKS! You know who you are. Let's see them old club photos of us being DEEKS. Get those albums out, go to your attics, basements, whatever and make it happen.

Kevan "Lemons" Wood's kickass K.G.
Best one ever built, in my not-so-humble opinion.

Random shots from Bug-In 26
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v18/Sumdumsurfer/Cars/BugIn26.jpg?t=1202932829)
Top left: Todd Fuller's K.G. trunk.
Top right: Lisa Maxwell... whatever happened to her?
Middle right: The scene... made a busy day at Disneyland look like Romper Room.
Bottom left: Brennan's Oval and Bob's (I think that's his name) Notch.
Bottom right: Fuller's K.G. engine. Super sano car!

This is, I'm guessing, at El Dorado Park for either that Club Day photoshoot (see VW Trends cover) or a random gathering of our cars. Could be either one. Can't remember.

Top: I see the front wheel on Vince Ito's Bug, Lisa's, someone's Notch in the back, Alex's 'glass Heb, and I can't make out the other cars.
Bottom: I remember climbing up in a tree and takin' this shot. Rick Meredith's car, McNew's, mine, Alex's, and someone's clean Mopar.

Glad that you're diggin' on the old stuff, Mr. Well.

On the way back from one of the Bug-In events, my best friend decided to take three sequential pictures of me passing him while he rode in McNew's old Squareback.

Ah, back when the freeways were a LOT less crowded and we could actually get our cars in the triple digit range.

Some more random D.K.K. pictures here...

These are the club cards that we used to carry. Once in a blue moon, we'd see a nice car and leave one of the cards on it, filled out with contact information. It was an honor to walk out and see that beige card on your ride.

Can't remember who's car this is... Rick? Bill? Worm? Anyone?

Normally, I don't care for cars with chopped roofs. This one, however, had outstanding structural craftsmanship and was actually done quite nicely. I think his name was Kevin. At the time, he was one of the producers at So Cal's famous KROQ 106.7fm radio station. (back when it actually played good punk music, before the emo crap they're playin' now)

I used to joke with Kev and tell him that the car merely needed alloys and Euro bumpers. That's all I'd do to it. Oh yeah... the car hauled ass, too.

I forgot what happened to Henry Mayeda's previous light blue Bug w/EMPI 8 spokes... but his next car was this gorgeous Karmann Ghia convertible.

Car drove very nice and was quite the looker.

This good lookin' Bus was Mark Ito's and the yellow Bug was his brother, Vince's. Two funny and great guys to hangout with. We were blessed with having our own in-house artist... Vince. He drew our fliers and anything that we needed.

Example of some of Vince's artwork... the stickers for his brother, Mark's, shop.

I can't remember whose car it was. I do remember that it was sold to someone who lived in my area. I remember chasing the guy down with a razor blade to remove his stickers!  ;)

Oh, YEAH! That was a huge thing, back then. If you sold your car to a non-member... BAD NEWS. Heard a few stories about that with D.K.K. and D.K.P. cars. The day that I (regretfully) sold my orange car, the kid was all bummed out. I gave the car away for next to nothing and he had the nerve to ask where the EMPI stuff was. Same with the club stickers, different Euro and vintage U.S. license plates, magazines, pics, and other stuff that he thought he was getting. I laughed and reminded him that I'd be stripping the car of all those things, the first time he came over. Next day, he was shocked to see that it had a three spoke Porsche 911 steering wheel and a set of N.O.S. Porsche 356 silber wheels. My boss at the Porsche dealer let me have parts from the Take-Off bin for either nothing or extremely cheap. Which worked out nice for my Bugs. Also for my Golfs which took Audi steering wheels and Ronal Quattro wheels.

But what made me laugh the hardest... him asking why I razored off the D.K.K. stickers! Too funny! To which I replied, "You want those stickers back on this car? Simple. Start attending the club meetings and events and try to get voted in."

(insert Dr. Evil laugh here)

Not at the moment, Turtle... sorry. I just simply took pictures of pictures. Soon as I get out and buy a new scanner, I'll make some high resolution stuff for anyone that wants 'em.

Fred, Awesome post!  I can't believe you have those pics.  Great shots all.  You mentioned Ronal wheels for the Audi.  Jeez, I was the domestic sales dick for Ronal back in the old R9 days.  I worked for a German fella named Percy Herman.  I loved calling him "Percy".  Funny. Worked there a few years then left before they came out with that awful "Teddy Bear" wheel.  It was a pretty sheeety gig looking back on it.
Anyways, take your pics to Target.  Yes Target.  Its totally free to scan them in their Photo Dept.  Then when done scanning, it costs about $4 bucks for the finished CD.  I did it.  Its amazingly cheap and simple.  Buy a scanner?  Why?  Target baby!

Keep those photos a comin'.  Still can't believe you still have some DKK biz cards.  How did those NOT disappear or disintigrate over the years?

Really cool.
P.S. Heres two more

Heres Bob Davis on the left, and Dean Sellers next to him.  The green car was Bob's.  I think thats Wilkerson (or Hicken) and Ramirez with their backs turned.  I can totally tell its Ramirez for sure with THAT hair.  Man we had some bad hairstyles back then.  Just wish I had hair to style these days.  whoa

The next one is Cory Oldroyd's Ghia.  This car was WHITE.  So much it almost hurt your eyes.  I remember on the 2.0 alloys he painted the non polished part Porsche Sepia brown.  Very different and it looked incredible.  He shaved the front turn signals and we mounted some lights inside the grills on the nose.  They were basically hidden till illuminated. Sweet ride.  I bet no one these days is cutting up their roofs and putting in aftermarket ragtops.... ha

NICE, Worm! WOW, I can't believe it... is that Lyle Schaefer? I also see the guy leaning up against McNew's old Squareback... I'm pretty sure he was the owner of that really clean '67 Notch. Dang, those are cool pics. I'm guessin' that's Henry's red Bus with the BRMs in the background, yes? LOVED that thing.

Thanks for the tip on Target. That's WAY more in my shoestring budget than a scanner. Awesome idea.

Okay, here's a blast from the past... Bug-O-Rama in Sacto, Nor Cal back in 1980. The Ito brothers, McNew, Brent K. Dave Fong, and myself all invaded.

Here's Brent at our motel, cleaning McNew's engine compartment.

View of McNew's and my car from our room in the bottom pic.

Here, we're exiting the freeway to the car show location. Decided to snap a pic of everyone's cars in front of me.

The locals and judges didn't know what to make of our cars OR us. HAHA!! At that time, Sacto still looked like they were livin' in 1972. So they were trippin' on our punk and new wave tunes and attitudes. Funny stuff.

McNew was always doing crazyassed stuff like this...

I couldn't stop laughing each time someone peeked under his car and saw his valve covers. CLASSIC!

On the way home, Dave Fong (who rode in my car up/back) and I made a decision to hop a fence and shoot pics of his surf trunks which matched this Wonder Bread gas tank thing. We were laughin' so hard when we did this.

You can also see him trying to take the picture offa our motel room wall with my club shirt in the background. Another shot of him crashed out in my orange car while we were doin' 100+mph. GOOD TIMES!

At some point on the way home, it was discovered by Fongo and me that we accidentally took our room key home.

If y'all think THAT'S stranger than fiction... somewhere, I'm pretty sure I have the damned thing. HAHAHA!!!

Thanks, Rick. I've always enjoyed taking pictures ever since I was around 8 yrs. of age. My parents always took tons of shots of all of us. So I guess it got passed on to me. I shoot photos for skateboarding and sometimes, music mags. I just dig pictures and documenting history. My sons are into it, too. My older one is taking Video and Photoshop Editing in high school. He's gettin' really good, too. I've got mega-tons of raw video footage that he's gonna edit. I only know how to edit photos, but my older boy has been teachin' this old dog new tricks on the video editor. It's FUN takin' old stuff and adding era music and doing fades and transfers.

Funny... I was so against digital cameras. Then, about three years ago, I bought a Fuji S7000 from my friend who had moved on to a Nikon D2X with all of the lenses. I bought a wide angle for the Fuji and had a blast, editing, takin' pics, and even videos with it. Now, I shoot with a Nikon D70 and I can only afford two lenses; 18-70mm wide angle for skateboarding and 70-300mm zoom for surfing. Also using a Nikon SB28 Speedlight remote flash.

One more picture. Back when I had my orange car, I'd change the rear window sticker quite often. I'd get bored with one and move on to another. Had everything from a surf, skateboard, radio, band, to VW stuff, or whatever. Can't believe that I still have this one. A foil background one that was on my car for awhile. I stuck it in my photo album and it's managed to survive all of these years.

Even though we've got all of this great technology and we're able to create pics in our house, on computers... I still favor the look of good ol' fashioned film photos. Especially black & whites.

Thank you, Susy, for bringin' back many fond memories. I still have this dash plaque, somewhere... with my Bug-In ones. NO, they're not for sale. Unless someone comes up with a stock '67 Bug. I'll settle for white or Savannah Beige, however.

Well, since I remember going to the Porsche dealers in 1968 and 1969 (someone rearended my Dad in the '68) to buy our Volkswagens, I think a third one is in order for me, now. I've waited long enough. Besides, SAE 90wt. bier has been consumed before... and that won't stop me either.

 ;D

Wait a minute; I see where you're goin' w/this... but doesn't a certain beige car need to be on the road, first.

I remember that plate... but I thought that he had that on the yellow car. Can't tell on that freeway offramp shot because my reading glasses aren't strong enough. HAHA!! When I get those shots scanned, we'll be able to see 'em better. Don't think that I ever saw his '67. Must've had that before I got voted in.

Thanks for the kind words. The weirdest part of owning that car... was driving around Orange & Los Angeles counties and getting pulled over by cops when I was doing nothing wrong. They'd approach my car, I'd be sitting there... young/dumb/scared/and both hands on the wheel, wonderin' what the hell I did. HAHA!! After awhile, I became used to it, but they'd ask me how I lowered it. I told 'em that it was nothing fancy or unique to anyone else's car. But they'd always compliment me on how the car sat, which I thought was pretty flattering. Especially as opposed to getting a fix-it ticket.

 ;D

Hey, DEEKS! You know who you are. Let's see them old club photos of us being DEEKS. Get those albums out, go to your attics, basements, whatever and make it happen.

Kevan "Lemons" Wood's kickass K.G.

Best one ever built, in my not-so-humble opinion.

Thanks Mark! Any way to get some decent copies of those photos?

Awesome car, one of the coolest rides I've ever seen in these "old photos" along with Lemonade's Sedan.

You guys' compliments is making me blush! :-* :-* Seeing all of these old photos sure reminds me of what great times we had with an outstanding group of people.

Kevan

You're welcome but not at the moment, Kevan... but soon as I get my lazy arse to a scanner, YES! Then, anyone that wants good pics of their old cars will have 'em for the asking.

Fred, I do not know where/when it was taken.  Fabian (Speedwell) posted it on another link and I pirated it for here.  Fab's you know?  Rick?  I was'nt hangin around the club much in these days, My days were limited mostly to rally's and an occasional meeting or day at the park .  I was driving a 63 vert that did not belong in the car show area.  It was clean just a sano beater so to speak (totally burnt on cleaning my car with a tooth brush.. yah know).  As well,  this was probably taken on a sat or sunday and in those days I was most likely in L.A at some punk show (with Cory Oldroyd or Fong) till the wee hours the night before.  Black Flag?  DK? SD? Adolescents... who knows.

I still go to those damn shows...  But now instead of $5 its $45+...

Blaydes
P.S. wish I could still skate like you do.

This was taken at the SCS showdown.. This was the last one held when SCS was on Orangethorpe near Beach. After that they moved to Katella.

Mark... it looks like you were talking up 2 cuties!  ;)  That would be Barb and Suzy.

In the lawn chairs I recognize Scott and Joey... don't remember the girl.

They used that shot or a similar one of the poster for the next year's show. I have 2 copies of that poster.. one of them framed.

Guilllaume, do I know Suicidal Tendencies.....?   Well, I guess you could say I have an "idea" who they are.  One night in Fullerton my friends band called Confederate opened for Suicidal Tendencies.  So, Cory Oldroyd (from DKK) and I were at the show and all these wanna be cholos from Venice show up and proceded to kick our North Orange County asses.  The pit was so brutal that when I fell down one time one of the cholo idiots kicked me in the face with his steel toe boot.  I was kinda bummin (and puffy).  So Cory being the big bruiser that he was, runs through the club at full speed and jumps on like 6 of them and proceeds to stake his claim back to the OC.  This basically went on all night.  Then after the show outside Icabods (the clubs name) I see Mike Muir, the lead singer, and I proceed to cuss him out three kinds of sideways.  Without thinking he ran up to me and totally punched me right in the face dropping me cold.
They won.
So, yes Guillaume I do know who Suicidal Tendencies are and I must say to this day I am still not a big fan.  Hah.  You like Social Distortion?  Mike Ness and I were quite cozy at one time with each other.  As well all the Adolescents and my good bros Agent Orange (saw them 2 months ago again). Thats that.
P.S. All I wanted was a Pepsi....

Rick, thanks for the clarification on the SCS event. I still have that t-shirt somewhere from that event. I recognize Barb and Susy in that pic, too. That's Scott in the lawnchair... haven't seen him since that pic was taken. Worm, do you still skate? If so, let's meet up! I got to skate with Schwimmer the other day. GOOD TIMES! Do I still skate?   Uh.... no.  I have a long board and I think its only used now to move heavy stuff around the house and the occasional six pac from the local market.  I wish tho.  Too lame these days.  I fall, I hurt, I'm done.
I would definately make time to come hang out at the park wit cha.  Theres a slim chance you might talk me into dropping into a bowl.  Best I look like a hockey goalie before I do tho. ha.
Glad you're diggin on Agent Orange.  I took my son to see them and the Adolescents, and the Dickies at the Galaxy a few months ago.  And you are right they still ROCK.  Better than the 3 chord shuffle like most punk bands these days.  Many moons ago I pretended to be a roadie for Mike Palm and James Levesque  and Scotty Miller.  Ah, I just carried a snare drum  or two in and got in the show for free.....  ::)   The last time I did that they opened for Bad Religion at the Roxy.  That was more than a few years ago.
Aw, from VW's to Devo and the Surf Punks to the Gears, then the Germs and Black Flag, then to better looking girls and Rockabilly.  Played that scene hard for MANY years.  In fact going to see Three Bad Jacks next saturday.  What a trip.  Life is good.
As Kid Spike from the Gears said.... "Don't be afraid to pogo, don't be afraid to relate, if it was'nt for this kind of music you would'nt have come to this place"
Peace

NICE! I dig the old stories about the shows. These days, I take my two teenage sons to a few shows, too. They like The Adicts, Agent Orange, Channel 3, D.I. The Adolescents, JFA, The Dickies, and T.S.O.L. Those are about the only bands that we follow.

Brian Brannon (JFA) still rips on a skateboard. A lotta of the guys still surf and/or skate, too. I'm not gonna talk anyone into doing anything that they don't wanna do when it comes to skateboarding. My only rule is... HAVE FUN. Period. 'Cause if you're not, something is wrong. A few of us are headin' to The Galaxy this next Thursday. A benefit show to help offset the cancer treatment costs for one the guitarists in D.I. Let me know if you wanna go.

Back to thread content; Rick, this site is a trip... constantly clearin' out the cobwebs in my mind and reminding me of stuff. You're right about that SCS event being a poster. I DID keep one from that day. But, sadly, I think that it might be gone. I'll have get up in the attic and check. There's a chance that I still have it.

You're welcome. This is just temporary till I get that pic scanned, Rick. In the meantime, at least you have that. I always dug your car with the U.S. front fenders, too. Of course, I'm rather biased towards Savannah beige cars. HAHA!! My family bought enough of 'em.

Hey Mark... I'm 98% sure that's my car but it looks like the pop out frames are polished and I'm pretty sure mine are flat black. I can't tell from the scans... is it running blades & EMPI guards? That's the way it would have been configured.

Stuff like the antenna location and the powder coated trim are farily unique to my car.

I know... I thought of that when I was retouching the photo. But it looks like the rest of the trim (incl. the door window stuff) is all powder coated black. I can't remember, but didn't you add the early front fenders and pop-out quarter windows right before it got crashed?

Here's a pic that I haven't seen since I took it. I was goofin' around w/my camera and shot Joe's 1960 ragtop hubcap with my Java Green Euro model '66 Sedan in the background.

This would have to be either late 1982 or early 1983. Can't remember the exact year... but I'm close. That green car was my stocker while I waited a year to get my license back. The state took mine away for a year; 11 speeding tickets in the orange car. HAHAHA!!! And every cop in just about every local city knew my car. Many of them were my customers, too. From all of the VW shops that I worked at. SUCKED! But driving the all original car with the 1300cc was a fun project car. Back during a time when no one was driving stock cars. 90% of 'em were customized. So I blended in with the scenery, so to speak. Later, I built a mild street engine with fake pea shooter exhaust tips exiting the factory cutouts in the rear apron with a hidden header/muffler. A full-on blast, messin' with Cal Look Bugs. They'd be all bummed that a car with whitewalls and two-tone factory wheels beat theim. HAHAHAHAHA!!! GOOD TIMES.

The early fenders and cookies were done specifcally for the last Bug-In and that was the only time the car was shown in that configuration unfortunately. The Pop-Outs however were done very early in the car's history with me.

Hmm... okay. I don't remember your car always having the pop-outs. But you'd know better than anyone.

(edit) WHOA! I just noticed that the last picture that I added must've been taken later. I now see Joe's D.K.K. sticker in his quarter window. I don't think we voted him in till 1983 or even '84. Weird.

If the Pop Outs are powder coated, they would have to have been done when they rest of the trim was done.

Cookie Cutters suit that car nicely.. Strange how they look good on cars that are lowered both front and rear.

The correct color, too! Well, at least the images look like the actual photographs, now.

(edit) WHOA! Just noticed something... now that the pics are more clearer and larger on my screen, I'm seeing lots of background stuff. Is that Jimmy Yowell and his car next to yours? Sure looks that way.

You know, having those pop outs in chrome/polished you achieve the opposite of most early mid lookers, since they have cal look rubber and the door window trim still shiny.
About the wheels, do what you fancy... just don't bring that car up to date. It's way to well preserved for that.

Just my 0.02 USD = 0.0133002 EUR = 0.104345 NOK

not that any one cares, but the notch on page one (67notch) wound up in my possesion in 1984, i traded it for a 59 euro ragtop about 6 months later, sold that and swore i'd NEVER own another VW, went to 12 step meetings and everything. Never say never because after being "clean for 6 years", i came acoss a 69 ghia, and my addiction flaired right back up like i didnt miss a day. probably bought and sold 50-60 cars since then, mostly to danny and brent.

Here, we're at the photo shoot for the cover and the inside feature on So Cal VW clubs in VW Trends magazine at El Dorado Park in Long Beach, CA. Looks like Mark Ramirez's car on the far left, forgot who's red car that is, Rick Meredith's car, my car, Rob's (I think) convertible, Dave McNew's car, Bob's Notch', Alex Gonzalez' car, don't recognize the dark car, and Kevan Wood's K.G.

In the foreground, Looks like Bob Davis with the white shoes, some tall dude, McNew, my friend, Bob R., Kevan, someone in a cowboy hat, and Rick Meredith looking to the right.

Next, we're at some So Cal multi club gathering at some park in O.C. or Inland Empire... I forget. In the foreground is Tod Fuller and his K.G. and to the right is Kevan Wood and his K.G.

The brown car belonged to a lady member of DKK but I can't for the life of me remember her name. That's her on the far side of the car.

Your car was sweet! When I think about doing a late model, your car and Ramirez's car are the ones I think of.

Still have most of my car and most (but not all) of my hair!  :D

Now if I could only get rid of the fat!  :(

Thanks, my name is Dan and I sold the bug in 1983 and bought a BMW 320i.

Larry's Pizza was one of our hang-outs before and after DKK meetings. Square slices of pizza, extra cheese in the salad and a cool video game room in the back!

And don't forget the much coveted slice of Pepperoni on that salad!  ;)

Mmmmmmmmmm, Larry's Pizza. Great pizza and salads. I was bummed when we had to move the meetings to Denny's. But at least they had cute waitresses and served food.

Food is the only sport that I believe in. Everything else is just life.

Lies all lies I tell ya. Larry's Moved about 200 feet from it's original location. We should check it out.

Hey McNew,
I remember seeing your car in Trends when I was about 11 years old and promptly going out and pulling the chrome covers off the turn signals on my dad's 67 sedan.  He wasnt impressed.   ;D

Cool seing pics with Fuchs.  That was a nice car; any idea of what happened to it?

I was at my friend's house the other day. He gave me this print that I haven't seen since he shot it. This was taken at Bug-In 29 or 30. He climbed up a tree and got our club's car show display. He ended up turning in the picture to his Photography Class teacher in college and (as usual) got an A+. The assignment was an image with varying colors.
He went on to be a professional photographer and still is, to this day. He travels the world and makes his living this way. In my opinion, he's the best photographer that I know. Today, his work can be seen in many different industries, including cruise lines, fast foods, skateboard magazines, car manufacturer ads, product ads, and many others. In a way, he's been my photography mentor for almost thirty years. I'm still learning.

I remember watching him climb up the tree to shoot this... and I'm so stoked that he managed to keep every picture that he's taken. Because of that, I've been able to get many of the old images of me skating and some of my orange '66 Bug. This is the first time this photo has ever been made public.

DEEKS, I'm sure that you'll be able to recognize a few people, right away. Dave McNew, Tod Fuller, and Scott in the foreground. Kevin Brennan and his Oval about midway in the line-up. Rick Meredith's beige '67 further up in the picture.
