Post by: Felix/DFL on February 15, 2008, 00:04:48 am
This is how it all started...Photo were taken at the Bahamas in 1964.The Article is in the Auto Motor&Sport from 65 (no.1)
Very cool ! If you are not into the german language I translate a bit,or better I try...
5:
Not less tan 1000 Dollars were the prize for the VW race class.Gurney No.9 had such a strong car that he could manage to push Foyt`s car constantly to give him more speed. Before the finnishline Gurney passed Foyt. But Gurney were disquallified and the Dollars were given to Foyt...
6:
Gurneys VW was running so good that he gave his car the Iron cross.

Sadly I sold this issue of AM&S at DD1 to Kobus, I was young and needed the money more for gasoline as for paper ::)

Foreign Car guide had an awesome 8-page article about these Bugs racing in Nassau, in its April 1965 issue.
Picture of the Inch Pincher on the cover, too.

Damn, one of the arcticle scannings was too large to upload. I'll reduce size and repost the Dean Lowry / EMPI article from home if Fabian doesn't beat me doing it  :D

Did you read the part about how the Inch Pincher had 250,000 miles on it by 1964? That's 31k each year since 1956. I thought Darrell went to school in Riverside, not Eugene, Oregon.

so after the inch pincher was retired.....they lifted the body off and used the pan and running gear for inch pincher too, correct ?

so where was this task completed and by whom and do we have any confirmed statements on what actually happened with the shell ? Is there any other photos than the ones Jeff had in VW Trends ?

Mark Schley told me that when Filter Dynamics purchased Empi (and not Mr. Bug...), Joe Vittone told the "kids" to clean out the back shed, which included the Inch Pincher #1 body. As it was one step away from being pitched to the dump, a fellow VW/Empi enthusiast, who lived near Mexico City, came by and wanted that body. Darrell gave him to him, just to get rid of it, and clean out the shed. Now, according to Mark, that guy drove up a beater sedan from Mexico, and switched bodies there at Empi, and DROVE the Inch Pincher #1 (body) home..... never to be seen again. Schley told me that story last summer. Okay "Indiana" Russell, time to get your plane ticket and Fedora hat and head for Mexico City. You're are only hope.

I love a challenge, if they can find the titanic, put a man on the moon and do 9's with a floorpaned beetle, IP1 cant be that hard  ???

If at first you dont succeed, look look again.

That shouldn't be too hard, Russell.  Only 22 million people to interview!
