Title: License Plates & Frames
Post by: Rennsurfer on March 23, 2008, 18:27:40 pm
I've been collecting license plates and frames since I was I was in my early teens. Here a few that I just found. Mr. Rayburn knows how I acquired my 1969 Renfree ones. HAHA!! Feel free to share, John.

Some plastic later ones from the '70s/'80s.

I have a lotta Porsche ones, too. But these are my two faves in the collection. I have a few of the gold Circle ones and the black plastic ones.

I have a few cool license plates from the '50s, '60s, '70s, & '80s. I'll post those up, sometime in the future.

So... let's see YOURS.

Mark's sister was car shopping, and came across a certain type 3 that Mark was asked his opinion of. A rather unremarkable car , but with a paticular feature. Renfree Orange plate frames. Mark talked his sister into buying the car so he could aquire the plate frames. I don't remember if he ever confessed or not. She went on to paint the car a horrible blue that looked just like an Easter egg! But none of that mattered, Mark got his prize!!

Cool frames, Zach.

John, I cracked up, at Nick's, when I found out that you still remembered that story after all of these years. She got that car from a priest for dirt cheap. He had bought it new in '69 and I loved the way it looked as a white car. I detailed it inside and out for her when she bought it. She already picked out her own frames for it and it still had the original black plates. Then, she painted it Easter Egg Blue. YUCK! Oh well... I still have the frames. HAHA!! I thought they were cool in 1981 or '82 and they're still neat to look at, now. I might clean 'em up and put 'em on my '67. We'll see.

BTW, if anyone has a set of black CA plates in decent condition, I'll trade some frames or buy them outright. I need the beginning letter to be T or higher. I prefer T or U but I'll settle if the plates are nice enough. Sadly, my car has new plates and I hate 'em. The rest of my cars have old/orig. plates and I gotta be consistent. HAHA!!

That "Bracket Racer-O.C.I.R" is cool!!

Here is what I have on my 56. When my grandpa sold his Pontiac Cheiftan, in the late 50s-early 60s, he pulled this plate off and hung it up in the garage. It stayed there for 40+ years and then I put it on my car. I never met him :'( but I think he would be proud.

The rest of the plates were also on various cars and trucks my grandpa owned.

Cool frames, Zach.

Thanks! I found the USA Scat one in Ensenada, Mexico a few years ago. Never seen or heard of another one like it... And it fits the plate for sh!t... the plate will have to be trimmed! The Keep on Buggin' one I got at a Drag Day long before I ever found my GTV. I bought the whole '67 decklid and black plate that was on it because I didnt have the tools to remove it, lol. I then sold the decklid, gave the plate to a friend, and still broke even. :)

Rick, I've already looked into it. After January, I'll be able to legally register my '67 with black plates... STOKED on that! I forgot who, in the club, got a few of us those Ala Mo' frames. I wanna say Tod Fuller, yes? Either him or McNew.

Shubee and Zach... cool frames/plates. Keep 'em coming.

nice collection! I have about 20 california dealer frames at any one time hung on my garage wall, I might go and take a pic of them all but I dont know how to post them up on here.

Hawaii frames seem to be real rare, and command a price premium over california of about 100%.

Cheers, Si.

That's actually a good question, John. I'll have to call her and find out. Lawrence, great pics of those old plates/frames. When O.C.I.R. started announcing that they'd be shutting down, I bought t-shirts, stickers, and that lic. frame for some future memories.

Yes it was Tod. Cool news about the plates... everyone was telling me I was gonna have to give up my TTT894 ;)

We have to find you a pair of "clear title" plates. I may have a source. He had a set of clear YOM plates for my '26 but then I decided to get personalized instead.

Dave Vanderbeke owned and drove the Renfree sponsored bug back in the day, Guillaume.  I worked at Renfree in 1972 as a parts technician...Dave was shop foreman.  My plate frame is from Ballard Motors (VW dealer) that was in Anaheim at Lemon and the 91 fwy...it's where the car was originally sold from in 1967.

Yeah, don't give up that T plate for your beige car, Rick. Unless, of course, you're gonna give 'em to me. HAHA!! Wishful thinking. I'll settle for higher letters, but I'm looking for T or U as the beginning one. Gotta have front and rear, too. I have till Jan. but I'm startin' the search early.

Oh and a query for the Lounge; is it easy to walk into a DMV and get a new Month sticker for the left side of the plate? Mine is so faded, it's not readable. Do I need to remove the plate and show them, provide a picture, or will they simply take my word for it? Thanks in advance.

Yes... I'm sure the demand and prices for Black & Yellows will be increasing substantially as January approaches.

I do all my registration stuff through AAA. All I've ever needed was a copy of my registration to show the expiration date and they gave me the month sticker. I usually get a new one every few years.

Yeah, Joe's always telling me to switch from State Farm to AAA. So, the other day, he and I drive over to his agent's office. We sit down and I tell her the details that she needed to quote me a policy amount. WOW! Soon as my current policy on my cars expires, I'm switchin' over! Way cheaper and I dig the fact that they fully handle the registration stuff. I hate dealing with the DMV local offices. Even the fact that I've been using their appointment system since the '80s... still a pain. Plus the office is very close to my house and right alongside the main runway (three zero) at LGB.

You don't have to have insurance with them... just pick up a membership. It's about $60. If you switch to AAA insurance, you'll need a membership anyway. I have all my cars insured with them. The '26 is about 1/2 what anyone else charges.

Yep, Joe's told me about that for years, too. But their rates are way cheaper than what I'm paying, and I've had a clear record for 20+ years. (knock on wood)

HAHA!! J.T. you're the only one besides Joe and me that still uses that. CLASSIC. Good to know about the change regarding target activity, John. It was quite the opposite back in the '80s as many of you will remember. I was always getting pulled over. Of course, my car wasn't exactly camouflage, either. Hee!

One night, after cruising Whittier Blvd. in my orange car, I stopped in where my friend, Robert, worked the graveyard shift at Winchell's Donuts on Lakewood Blvd. & Carson St. Drinkin' coffee, sodas, and day old hockey-puck durometer deep fried goodness... and this C.H.P. patrolman walks in. He sits at the counter and starts eating the fresh donuts and asks, "Who's orange Bug is that?" I was behind the counter and I told him it was mine. He walked me out to my car. He points to the license plate and tells me that I had better have the legal one in the car. I was shocked that I left my show plate on there. D'OH! It's a black CA plate with only a bright yellow 1966 tag/sticker on it. I totally forgot to change it back to the registered black CA original plate, which was under the seat. I apologized and told him I'd change right then and there. Explained that I had entered the car in a car show and forgot about the plate switch. He was totally cool and asked to see the rest of the car. He was blown away that the engine and trunk areas were clean enough to eat off of. HAHA!!

I always ran around with German plates on my car or the oval Z plates (from cargo ship transports) and got away with that for many years. My problem was speeding and racing other cars. I finally slowed my game down after my two sons were born. Slow learner... but I eventually caught on.

I've got no pics but I've got a couple of frames - Cotton Goff VW Porsche was on my race car for several years on a blue Cali plate last stickered in 1975. Kept that when the car went! Also got a Don Burns VW one (damaged  :( ) and an Orange County South County one, plus a pair of repro Econo ones. Have to get some pictures one day... ;)

thanks!

You're not ruining anything... this is a discussion thread pertaining to license plates. All California plates made from 1956 on measure 6" tall and 12" wide. Hope that helps.

For $75USD, you can have these people make you an old black California plate.

http://www.licenseplates.tv/cat/Replica%20California%20License%20Plates%20from%201963%20to%201968.html?osCsid=90b8771540a6f92f6997c9de08e7c062 (http://www.licenseplates.tv/cat/Replica%20California%20License%20Plates%20from%201963%20to%201968.html?osCsid=90b8771540a6f92f6997c9de08e7c062)

Many car owners run them for their front plates, out here.

Keep 'em coming.

i'm asking cos i want to have dutch plates for imported cars from the US. i'd seen that website before, but unfortunately the dutch plates they sell over there are the ones we use for modern cars (nasty yellow ones), and they don't carry dutch oldtimer plates (dark blue ones)
normally i'd need to have an exemption on my license, but i'm trying to get round that ;)
hence, my question :)

Hey guys,
A friend of mine has a 6000 original mile 67 sedan (ruby red) that was originally sold at Spartan VW in San Jose.  A plate frame would be way cool for this car.  Can anyone help?

Digging up an old thread. I've got a few cool licence plate frames, here are some of my favourites:

These are actually original Renfree dealer black plates too, there's an old sticker on the black saying so. Way cool!

And the one on my car:

Got many more, but these are the coolest... (and no, not for sale  ;))

HOLY SHIT, a Johny Catron frame!  Now that brings back some memories.  In the late 70's, I took a job at George Follmer Porsche Audi in Pomona.  The location was the old Catron dealership and Johny used to stroll through occasionally.  Along with selling VW's, Johny played trumpet in a swing band (with only three fingers...two were missing from an accident).  I remember him as a true shyster and the inventor of the famous Catron three finger goose (what you got when you walked out the door after paying a little too much for your new car :o).  That frame's a keeper! ;)

Kai, those are some cool license plate frames. I remember all of those. I've got a nice set of Renfree frames that I've had for about 28 years. And they're the four bolt pattern. Which means they were older. As the '70s progressed, the frame makers went to a two bolt pattern. Your dealer plates are also cool. The stickers denote the last year before the month designation was implemented in 1976. Before that, we only had the year.

I'm willing to buy and/or trade anyone for a certain frame that I'm looking for. It's a Lakewood Motors one. Preferably a four bolt one. Either way, it has to be in decent condition. It's going on my Zenith Blue '67. Please contact me if you know where one is. Saw one at Bug-In 33, but he didn't want to part with it and had it only for display. The guy was totally cool and GAVE me a set of reverse light wire grommet covers. Hard to find those!

Thank you in advance.

Man, that sucks...  knowing Mr C., he probably went for the cheapest of the cheap ::)  "Quality license frames" are three words that don't go in the same sentence together.  You should see  some of the crap we've had at CVW over the years :(

Joe Schneider's place was a repair shop that catered mainly to BMW's but he took pity on us VW guys.  That's him in the blue striped shirt at the DKP Reunion in 1990.  There were license frames as well as round, mylar window stickers. 8) 8) 8)

Cool frame, Kai! I have a later Lakewood one. I grabbed one from the Sales Dept. right before they closed down. Mine doesn't have the VW logos and I painted the background orange (same color as my first '66) and I also removed the white paint from the raised letters to expose the chrome. Looked great on my car in the '80s.

I'm trying to locate a slightly older four bolt pattern one. If I can't find one, I'll gladly take a two bolt one. The only Hawaiian frame I have is a set of Ala Moana ones. But I doubt that I'll ever part with those. They're mint condition, too.

If you ever consider selling that Lakewood frame outright, please let me know. Thanks!

I think so. I only have one Nevada frame in my collection. Chaisson or something like that. When McNew lived out there, I was visiting him in the mid '80s and picked up one. Many states didn't have license frames. They opted for stickers on the rear of the car, instead. Some states did both frames and stickers.

Sorry bro, I understand you want it, but for every frame I've got I recieve about 10 emails of people who have something special with that frame and want to buy it. If I give in I will have no collection left within a few months..

If I find another one it's yours! (hope that helps a little)

VERY COOL frame! Never seen like that. I'm guessing that fits only the earlier (pre-'56) California plates? If not, it sure looks like it does, due to the extremely rounded corners. Either way... super unique.

Sold most of th eframes i collected over the years (only so much room for junk...) but stil have these two left, if anyone interested in a trade for something (wife, sister, girlfriend, cat...).
Not seen a New York one before and no idea who Bob Bozanni is!

Bozanni VW is still in business.  Though I never met Bob, there were plenty of stories years ago about how he had an actual Guru for help in making key business decisions :o ::).
Oh, you mean he smoked pot... :D

The Bozzani family has been selling cars since 1911.  My dad was a good friend and fraternity brother of Bob's at Occidental College here in the greater Los Angeles area.  My father and Uncle bought new VW's, a ghia and standard beetle respectively, in 1971.  My crew cab was purchased there new, in '61, and my ragtop was serviced there after being brought over from Germany.  Bob's son runs it now.  Lots of history for me.

I'd be interested in that frame.  Let me know.

Thanks.

Dave

In Arizona they passed a law that goes into affect on January 1st that you cannot have a license plate frame that blocks the state name at the top of the plate.  The fine is $130 if you get caught.  On the news they were saying that this will hit almost everyone in the state.  Don't you just love Big Brother.....?

I know my memory, like me, is getting up in age... but the only Newport Beach, So Cal Porsche dealer that I remember is still standing. Back in the '70s/'80s, it was called Chick Iverson Porsche+Audi. I'm half certain that they may have sold Volkswagens, as well. Last I checked, it's called Pristine Porsche and Land Rover and they're still located on Pacific Coast Highway.

Back around 1978-1980 a popular license plate frame that many fast cars ran on the back of their cars simply read "Support your local police".  Anyone ever seen one or have one?  At the time is was meant to be amuzing, but I think it would have more meaning today.

The frame was chrome, with black lettering on a white back ground.

Just got a couple of these and put one on the back of my '82 BMW. Kinda cool for two reasons... near where I grew up and currently work. Also, I managed Long Beach Auto Haus till '84. This company started in '86 and has been there ever since. Cool shop, great people, and a myriad of great Bimmer race cars, and other cool assorted German cars.

(edit)Wow, I was just looking at that Cotton-Goff frame on eGay for $127. Sheesh! I have one of those, too. Guess I'm gonna hang onto most of my frames for a few more years.

Yep, I remember hangin' out at your place many many times. Practically lived there. L.B. Autohaus is on Broadway near Termino, Jeffrey. That's another reason I thought the frame was cool... ya never see Belmont Shore on one with a business name. I forget what year you two moved outta there, but I'm guessing '86-'87? That's about the time that the shop opened. They're on the north side of the street.

I thought I spotted some (what looked like) newly repoped license plate frames at the last Bug-In. This guy had (new) frames for Meltebeke, Refree and others. They all were the same style, no casting name on the back. Wanted $50 each. They reportedly came from a collection but the seller did not know anything about their origin....

Hey mark, not a problem, I appreciate it. It's an early chrome one. My brother-in-law has one that is on his fast back that his father gave him years back that was originally bought at Colome Motors. He won't give it up.  :-\   I use to do alot of parts buying there in my early years when they were in business, plus Montebello is my home town. Regarding the Newport Beach VW dealership..............it  was Chick Iverson.  Started out in the mid-50's on Coast Hwy selling beetles and soon took on Porsche.  Moved in the very late 60's or early 70's to a "new" location on Bayside Drive near the bridge to Balboa Island.  They took on Audi in the late 70's due to the corporate "party line".  I kinda got the idea that Chick wasn't so thrilled with this.  For eons they had two frames, one with the VW emblem only and the other with both VW on the lower left and Porsche on the lower right.  There are already pix of them.  Chick was very well known in Newport and could figuratively get away with murder with his escapades like driving thru town on Balboa Blvd or Coast Hwy with John Wayne, both sitting on top of milk crates and sticking their upper torsos (and above) out the sunroof.  The rest of us would be busted for stunts like that.  He was a visionary in his time for introducing both Volkswagen and Porsche to the "beautiful people" of Newport Beach.........and they all sucked it up quickly.  The new dealer (can't remember the name and could care less, to be honest) is located in a new facility on Coast Hwy and peddles everything from VW to Bentley...........hence some misunderstanding of what Iverson was offering.  Definitely NOT the same dealership.  We still have our '68 Type 912 with his Porsche frame that we've owned for eons.

Hey, thanx for having me/us in on this.  My wife had a 64 beetle with a sunroof when we got married in 1970.  A couple of things:  The brakes were so weak on it that I almost went off into the sand at Pismo Beach offramp to Coast Hwy.  Used the hand brake to get it stopped.  Otherwise a really nifty car.  We only got rid of it when a Newport cop ran thru a stop sign chasing 4 blacks in an old Olds with a color TV in the trunk with the lid wide open.  Of course, it was theirs.  I pitched a fit with the NB Police Dept. The funny thing was that her parents lived next door to Andy Devine, the character actor with the squeaky voice.  I drove up in the trade in..........a 61 22Sb (carbureted) Mercedes.........as black in color as you could get.  Andy looked at me and said..."WHAT are you doing in that Mercedes?!"  Calmly told him that I really didn't want the steering column to protrude thru my wife's chest by a cop.  The only other thing I can think of is that I was, unfortunately, one of the very first people to find out about the 1968 case alloy problem and cylinder head studs getting sucked out of the case.  Thanks to the guys in C. CA that came up with Case Savers!

Generally speaking, all VW's were sold by Iverson with the VW emblem only on the frame.  All Porsches had the VW on the left and Porsche on the right.

Anybody out there happen to have one of these they can do without? I did not even know there was a Schmidt VW dealer, let alone one so close to me! (well, 200 miles close)

The Chick Iverson frame is one that I regret not being able to find. I had one on my orange car at one time. Great story on that dealer, by the way.

Sarge, that literature is COOL.

Here are the Iverson frames that I have on my '67 vert and my '64 SC.  You can see 2 of the versions, 1 for VW and 1 for Porsche+Audi.

Also here's another one that I have with the VW logo on one side and the Porsche logo on the other.

Regards,
Jim

I stand corrected on something.......the original Iverson dealership WAS on Newport Bl and 22nd on the penninsula, not Coast Hwy.  Old age brain fart.  The place on Coast Hwy was Newport Imports and was the local "Ferrari" hangout + other stuff that was more than my pockets could ever bear.  Newport Imports was originally the Lincoln Mercury Dealer.

On the Iverson yellow frames that are Porsche/Audi..........those are the later frames from somewhere around 78-80 for vintage.

I simply notice that was was "then" is not what is "now" in general.  Yesteryear was a certainly simpler time. Oh, well.

I am not 100% sure that the Meltebeke frame is an original one. I saw that guy selling those few frames, they look NOS, but they do not match any Meltebeke frame I have ever seen. As I recall, there wasn't any mfg name on the back. Could be a modern day repop... Still, Meltebeke was my hometown dealer, as I have a pair of original ones on my truck.

Ted, I went to school with the Cary and Drew Colome. Their dads dealership was in Montebello and was there for many years. Drew Colome still sells vintage VW and vintage Porsche cars. He gets his hands on some pretty cherry cars. I think the private dealership is still called Colome Moters   http://www.colomemotors.com/gallery/main.php     Cary lives in Hawaii now but Drew is in Newport Beach. check out his cars for sale.

Thanks Glenn, I knew that they stiil exist, I lived in Montebello most of my life, now in Whittier. Use to go there alot. I know one family member that was a Police Chief there recently, now retired. Talked about them alot. But on my frame, getting mixed info on it cause of the little bug on the side there, wanted to know if anybody knew about that. I've seen frames without the little bug.  ???

Well , well , well, does parking a car for 22 yrs pay-off !! I've got the then cool CHICK IVERSON
Newport Beach VW frame on my black 67 bug. I guess I'll have to clean it up some & take its
picture for all to see. I really liked seeing the HARRY HILL,COLLEY & CATRON. All three were
favorite haunts while parts shopping in the late 70's & 80's. Did anyone know that Johnny
Catron was the RECARO distributor for California, he ran it as NORTAC .... Catron backwards !!
I haven't seen any WOOLVERTON ...El Monte -- or Ontario ....anyone??   GEEZ, I should have
got those EMPI frames from ECONO way back then. My buddy bought as many as he could --
both front style & rear style -- globes were on top / bottom.

Volkswagen West was in Anaheim. The '69 I bought last year came from VW West, and it still had it's original frame on it. My '79 originally came form Bob Witham in Westminster [it became Garden West Motors]. When I bought the car is had a "Keep on Buggin" frame [I still have it] on it. It took some time but I finally was able to find a set that I'll eventually redo for the car. I think that dealer was only in business a couple of years. I also worked in the parts department at Green Motors in Norwalk for about a year. I'd love to find a frame from there too.

I worked Here for a few years . The 2nd oldest continuously run VW dealership in U.S.

Finally gave in and sold my Woodland hills to Bill Bowman for his ghia..... Didnt want to but better it be on the  right car than my wall.

SURPRISE!!!! 2 hours after he recieved it I found this one online ! "Give and ye shall recieve!"

I know the scene is based in Cali and lots of interest there. But it's hard to find a nice east coast frame.

I have two of those, Jeffrey. One's a little older... but they're both yellowed out. They used the white plastic like Al Tatti did in Downey. If you're interested in one, I'll gladly trade for a Lakewood Motors frame or I'm sure that we can work something out. I worked there, after the Mc Kenna family bought it, when I was a service adviser.

I'm still in the hunt for a good, solid original Humphrey Motors plate frame from Hayward, Ca.  That's where my Aunt bought my car from back in '72.  It had the frame on it until the late eighties, but then it disappeared...... probably into the depths of my parents garage.  I'll never find it there :(

Jeffrey,
Let me know when you get your '69 to showroom condition as I have a VW West plastic insert for you! You may remember they were our "go to" dealer at Rollings Automotive in the early 80's, so somehow I picked one up. No plate frames though. Then Bob Witham may have come after Garden West because my vert is a '79. I bought it in '83 with the original dealer info in it.

As for the insert/paper plate, that would be cool. Bruce, let em know what you want for it off line and maybe we can make a deal.

regarding restoring them, I have had a few re-chromed, with varying results - the more work you put into rubbing them smooth/ rubbing the pitting out/ or having them in good original condtion, the better the final result will be. Who you then get to redo the paint, Im not sure, but on mine, I have masked off the lettering area, spray painted it, then cleaned the paint back off the lettering and logos with wire wool, and if you are careful, you get almost perfect paint coverage in the small detail areas.
