Title: Out of the Cocoon or How I spent My Saturday
Post by: Rick Meredith on October 15, 2006, 05:07:39 am
Most of you guys know the story of my '67. For those of you who don't here's the quick version. Bought it in '77 and quickly Cal-Looked it. It was a staple at VW events in the late '70s / early '80s. I was active in DKK during the those years and we were the premier Cal-Look club of that era... fitting in between the DKP eras. and winning most represented club at the last 4 Bug-Ins at OCIR.

This is how it looked then.

One month after the last Bug-In, I crashed it driving to work. I moved the car to the carport next to my parents house and it's sat there ever since that day.

Well, today a new chapter started... my old pal Bill Schwimmer came over and we (along with my 10 y.o. son Anthony) took it out and moved it to the garage to assess it's current condition and start it back on the road to being a running, surviving Cal-Look car. I've included some pictures...

The resting spot

Out from under the crap and the car cover... this is the first time I viewed the car in about 10 years... when we replaced the car cover that had rotted off of it with the current one...

So the first problem was that because the tires were flat, the beam/sway bar was on the ground. So we decide to put a dolly under the front wheel we could get to, lift the back end on a floor jack, swing it to the left, and then pull it back until we could get a dolly on the right front wheel.

So do you plan on just fixing the damaged portion and leaving everything else intact because after being washed the car actually looks quite presentable in that rear 2/3 shot . You might want to ditch that louvered firewall though. ;) Its also rather nuts that you hadn't seen the inside of your car for more years than I have been on this earth. 21 years on the 29th....haha

That is very cool, Rick. Thanks for sharing and good luck!!

First of all, I want to thank everyone who replied. I will keep posting updates as they happen. I hope to get my body guy to come over next week and decide which way we're gonna head wth the body work. Overal the paint is still passable but it is rough in places.

So do you plan on just fixing the damaged portion and leaving everything else intact because after being washed the car actually looks quite presentable in that rear 2/3 shot . That is very cool, Rick. Thanks for sharing and good luck!!

The current plan is to leave it as original as possible. Obviously the hood and apron are shot. The quarter panel we're not sure. I may keep the firewall as it usefull in keeping my forearms clean shaven!  ;D

Oh and thanks for make me feel older than dirt!  :P   :D

Is that what they call unearthing!!! Keep us posted on the progress!!! Car looks bitchin!!!!

LOL... well I told Bill yesterday that I felt like an Archeaologist!

I dunno about my son... he's got his eyes on my '26 Roadster! Of course Just as long as he gets the car bug... even if it's the import tuner bug, I'd be happy.

Thanks! I'm planning on keeping you guys in the loop to keep my motivation up and get some ideas.

As far as I know, it's one of 2 surviving & original DKK club cars. The other is Greg Brinton's black '67.

seems like good olīRick has been brainwashed by Bill and the Lounge ;)

Bill has been trying to brainwash me for years!  :D

Everytime I'd see him, one of 2 questions would come up.

1. "When are you gonna do something with your bug?"

2. "When are you gonna do something with your notchback?"

Part of it too, is the untimely passing of Mark Herbert... while I was never close to Mark, he was part of the circle of friends I hung out with. His passing made me realize that we don't get any "extra" days and time is running out. Plus several other things are coming together to make it happen.

Youve got the bug again!  ;D

The Bug never left... it's just been out in the carport!  ;D

Rick

"we don't get any "extra" days and time is running out."

Rick

Never a truer word said, never put off until tomorrow if can be done today. Our lifes are all very short in real terms and we should enjoy them to the full.

Good luck with the car and get your son into VW's what  a great inheritance he has coming in many many years !

hey Rick- looks like a strong car, ready to see the light of day again! Survivor cars are cool, but even cooler are guys that were around back then and are still into it now.

Let me know if you need an extra arm to get shaved by that firewall! ;)

See ya-
JIM

Oh ya... you'll definately be in on the fun! I'm gonna need a lot to get this going. My goal is to have it at the Classic next year. I figure my body guy will probably have it until the end of the year.

I'm gonna be going through and replacing a lot of stuff. All the rubber is pretty much shot... the front and rear glass and weatherstrip were originals. The windshield was bashed by my head during the crash. (Can you say concusion!) I had replaced all the rubber on the doors and the original stationary rear quarter glass were replaced with pop-outs while I was driving it.

I wanna put a new beam on the front with drop spindles. It's got Type 3 disc brakes on it that I did before you could buy kits so I put it together myself. It was lowered by pulling all the split leaves and one big leaf out of eace tube. Trans will be gone through and I'll probably go to rear disc brakes. I was actually in the process of aquiring the parts to do it back in the day. Motor is gonna have to be all new as the orignal is long gone. I was supprised to find some of the bits and pieces inside it though. Offset fan housing, cylinder tin and some suporting tin along with some CB Empi knockoff valve covers.. all painted to match the body. Trans will be gone through completely.. for the first time!  :) I'd like to go 5-speed but that my be a project for later on. The interior is in suprsingly good condition. I may not need to do too much to it.

Rememer when I said earlier in the thread that things were coming together to make my project a reality?

Well I pulled the car out on Saturday. Sunday night, an original paint, Savanna Beige '67 hood was put into the ads on "The Samba." I found the ad yesterday (Monday) called the guy and I bought the hood today. And get this, the guy lives no more than 15 miles from me.

So now the hood is in the back of my Jeep!

I'm happier than a pig in slop!  ;D

Now the only thing I need is an apron.

Rick

The reason I ask is because I am 100% getting a '67 next year from this old man who lives near me and I am so excited I know my bets memory will be the day I actually ge tit.

I'm hoping that the best memories are yet to come!  ;D

The car and I have seen a lot of action during the 6+ years I drove it. I think we did 8 Bug-Ins at OCIR. Cruising Whittier Blvd. Club meetings, Drag Racing, Rallyes. A lot of my best memories I've already shared here. the 36 hour Thrash, the Last Bug-In and others.

You might want to ditch that louvered firewall though.

I LOVE the pictures, I LOVE the story and I LOVE the car!

....Heck - I even LOVE the firewall and the "hot air on windshield distributor plastic thingys" as well - it is exactly what separates the real lookers from the Internet lookers... Purity and genuinity! I simply love it ....... please do not massage this gem into the new school old school look....

Funny........! But - JHU&others - how does this fit with our number one belief of Form-Follows-Function? (I guess it is another example of rule number 1,5 - Form-Follows-the head of the owner) I love 'em both.

rasberry??? i was told by a guy from california that a raspberry was a fart????

and on a more serious matter. very good to have this car redone. i see a lot of people just chop their cars apart to sell all the pieces. and not restoring it.

to me it is all about to preserve a car, love it and make it into something that you like in the first place. and it is better if you have good taste, like a cal-look taste or resto-cal-taste....

but anyway glad you hang onto it and finally could get it back in working order. keep up the nobel work

OK... so you know how all you Euro guys like the USA spec cars cuz they're different than all the Euro cars that your buddies have?

Well, I had worked on converting my US code '67 to a Euro code Deluxe '67. Disc Brakes (Yes 5 on 205 were std on US '67s), short overriders, Amber Tops, VW 1500 decklid and early headlights.. although I had early 911 headlights in it. I even had an OE Steering lock but I never installed it. US cars weren't equipped with those either. Actually, when I wrecked it, it was 5 lug... Porsche 5 lug. I had Cookie Cutters on it. Still have those too.

WHY? Cuz everyone had US Code '67s and a Euro Code '67 was rare.

The irony of the situation is that my orginal German Steel US Code front fenders were in the attic of my parents house when I crashed. I think it would be pretty hard to replace those now... and yes, they're still there.

 ;)

Yes, I'm pretty sure that I'll put the '67 fenders on it... How hard is it to find any German Steel front fenders... let alone German Steel '67s.

Yes my good man, I do know that...but in the very first pic, the car undesputably sports a set of eight spokes (original Spyders i recon?)...with 4 bolts each. I doesn't seem to like adaptors are used, but I might be mistaken on that one.

Yes my good man, I do know that...but in the very first pic, the car undesputably sports a set of eight spokes (original Spyders i recon?)...with 4 bolts each. I doesn't seem to like adaptors are used, but I might be mistaken on that one.
The 8 Spokes are Repops in the first picture But I Sold Him this Real Set of EMPI 8 Spokes To Put On this Time!!!

As shubee pointed out, those were not Empis. They were the very first set of copies that came out in the late 70s. I bought the 1st set that came into Dave Greiner's Auto Haus in Orange.

No Adapters were used on the car. I took 68 rear drums and had the noses cut down to fit the '67 axles. In the front I used '68 front drums for a short while and then put together a disc brake setup using junkyard Karmann Ghia spindles with new rotors, bearings and T3 calipers.

Thanks for keeping me honesty guys. Unfortunately, we've had some financial set-backs. I had to drain the money I had set aside for the car to help bail out some family members. Also, my business has been slow and my expenses have been up so I'm not making the money I was before.

On the plus side, I have been able to star picking up some parts here and there. I've been especially looking for those "hard to find" vintage parts that I'll need to give it that authentic early 80s look.

Also, I may be changing jobs. After 20 years of working for myself I've, found an IT Support job. Completely different than what I'm doing now. I've been through two interviews so far, first with the guy who will be my boss and the second with his boss. Both of those were very positive and both of them said that they want to hire me. I need to have another interview with the next guy up the ladder. This guy is not an IT guy so I'm not sure what to expect. It sounds like that if this guy approves me, I need to be processed through their HR dept. and then I'm in. I have a friend in another part of this organization who says they are very slow when it comes to the hiring process. It took her 3 months from her application to her start day. Pay is less than I made when my business was doing well but more than I'm making now.

As far as more pictures, I'm sure there are some around but I was not much of a picture taker. I'll have to look. I have added some pictures in other parts of the site but I have to add them to this thread.

Funny, I hope to go the other direction with my IT career. A few more years of exp as the network security guy at my local Uni then open up a consulting company doing incidence response and forensics. I know what you mean about how life can suck up all the VW fun money. Sold a few thousand dollars worth of VW stuff at a show a few years ago with the intention of getting some work done on one of my projects. Within a week our heater died (middle of winter) and our other car was in a fender bender. There went that money. Anyway, I was mostly wanting to see some more pics from your car so I could steal a few ideas for my '67.  ;D

And just remember, some days your the windshield, and some days your the bug..er..insect.

I've never really worked IT before. I did some freelance consulting before and some web design. I'm mostly self taught so I don't have really any "education" I can show a prospective employer. Of course, I'm the guy who everyone calls when their computer is acting up. I'm glad that the 2 guys I talked to said basically "We'll know in a week or 2 if you know what you say you know." So basically, I have 2 weeks to show them I can do the job. I It's gonna mostly be trouble shooting applications, internet and wireless networking. Some hardware... swapping out hard drives, video cards etc. Anything more than that, they farm out to their computer supplier, Delll.

I'm always willing to share ideas too, just ask!

Weldin' is too high falutin... I was gonna just gonna use bailing wire to hold 'em together and then duct tape around the middles so the airs won't leak!

Really? Who do you know?  ??? ::)

Just kidding! I already told Sue that we'd be taking the car to AZ for you to do the interior. It will be simple... I like them business like. I 'never cared for the "couch" look that was popular in the '80s. I'm thinking stock door panels and a simple pattern on the seats... but I'm open to suggestions.

Shall we get the thread back on track now?

The original plan was to pack and load the car on Thursday and leave early on Friday. Unfortunately I didn't allow myself enough time on Thursday to do everything I needed to do. I picked up the trailer from Randy's house on Firday morning and then Randy and Cameron helped me load the car on the tralier. By the time I got home, finished packing and loading and got ready, it was 2:00.

[attachment=1]

We hit the 241 to the 91 only to find that the 91 was closed due to a tanker truck fire. For those not familiar with the area, the 91 is one of the major arteries from Orange County to the Inland Empire. This tied all the Freeways in the area in a knot. We tried bypassing the bottleneck but everyone else had the same idea we had. After 2 and a half hours we were still in Orange County... a trip that would normally take about 20 minutes. Knowing how much further we had to go, we figured that we would not make it to Carson City until maybe 4 or 5 am. We decided that it made more sense to return home and leave early on Saturday morning instead.

The next morning we got a pretty early start.

[attachment=1]

The picture doesn't really show how dark it was... the street lights turned off a few minutes before this was taken.

After Sue's manditory Starbucks (Coffee) stop we we on the road.

Shortly we were Northbound on the 395 in the middle of freaking nowhere!

Although the scenery can be spectacular.

of course all I saw out of the review was this

About noon we hit Bishop which is one of the largest towns on our route.

We didn't realize that they had their "Mule Days" celebration on this weekend so it was bumper to bumper traffic through the town, taking us almost an hour.

[attachment=1]

soon we we back on the open road

[attachment=2]

We found some spectacular scenery during a "comfort" stop along the Walker River

SUe wouldn't let me take her picture but I snuck this one in.

It's had black welting for many years so I'll probably leave it that way although I'll keep my eyes open for the proper colored welting and running board covers just in case I decide to change.

That would be cool if you end up locating those. I've yet to see a Savanna Cal Looker with those... so it be unique, in a sense.

Hehehe... probably paid too much for it but it was #2 on list of plate frames;

1. Ala Moana VW because so many DKK cars ran them... although mine never did. I always ran one of those black plastic Wink frames cause I could get them from work for next to nothing.
2. Chick Iverson VW because that dealer that got most of my OE parts money. It was close enough to my house and it was so nice driving to the beach in my '67. I'd always drive around the Back Bay on the way back home. Commonwealth was closer but driving through downtown Santa Ana wasn't near the experience.
3. Renfree VW. If Iverson didn't have it, I went to Renfree.

 ;)

LOL... well we're quite a ways away from that.

Honestly, it's never been a priority for me.

I really like the look and feel of Fabs '67... I'd like to do something along those lines. Simple, understated and functional.

I think when you have someone with talent, you should give them a pretty free reign and let them use their creativity.

Mr. Gabbard has been vacationing in So Cal since before The Classic so he hasn't had much of a chance to do anything.,

Well this isn't the update I wanted to give.  :(

It's become apparent over the past few weeks but more over the past few days that the way I wanted to pursue this build is not going to happen.
There comes a time after pounding your head into the wall enough times that you realize that you're not getting anywhere and it becomes time to stop. All I'm doing is pissing away my limited funds and my car is not getting any closer to completion.

I'm not sure which way I'm heading but right now everything is on hold.

I need to step back a develop a new way to head with this project because clearly the present one is not feasible.

Thanks to everyone who has tried to help me find a 1/4 panel. It means a lot to me that you took time to try to help.

Rick

DAMN!!

That is so very close. I've found that the one i was looking for is a 111-801-021 A and it looks like this one marked 111-801-021 AE.

It looks like this one doesn't have the holes for the trim... maybe that accounts for the different suffix on the part number.

OH Sarge??

PM sent!

If you have the VIN of the parts you are looking for you can send them an e-mail in english, they will tell you if they have this part or not (there's the english translation for the website on the top of the page).

Rick, it looks like its got the recess for the later bumpers, just not the bracket on the outside. I suspect that the later revision is to add that in place. I think I said somewhere else that it shouldnt be too hard for a good body guy to re-make that section to look more original though. Good luck and DON'T GIVE UP! ;)

Time for a small update...

Been picking up parts here and there since I got the car back... mostly motor parts etc.
Made a decision on a body shop.

The next step was prepping the car for the body shop. I wanted to pull out the gauges, steering wheel, running boards and a some other stuff before the car went to the bodyshop.

I had tried to spend some time in the garage a few nights last week but every time I tried, something happened to keep it from happening.  :-[

And then...

Steve Wilkerson (Steve DKK) flies down to So Cal for the weekend and a few Deeks decided to celebrate the occasion with dinner on Sunday night.

Next thing I know, Lisa talks everyone into going over to my house to disassemble my car.  :o

With Steve, Dan, Worm, Bubba, Henry & Nanci, Lisa & her girls, Sue and I all working we knocked it out in no time!
Many Deeks make a light load!  ;D

Thank you all for coming over and helping  :-*

I have a line on "The Holy Grail" a.k.a. NOS Left Front '67 1/4 panel that I'm pursuing but if I don't have it sewn up by Wednesday, I'm just going with what I have.
The car should be in the body shop by next week at the latest.

Today, a few of us DEEKS gathered to get Rick's front fenders off to the body shop. Our esteemed Worm ventured up into the attic for the treasure hunt, such as it were.

Nope, that's a shifer.

We're getting warmer.

BINGO! Mission accomplished.

So, off to the body shop we went and saw the l/f quarter panel back to it's proper state of being.

The fenders were delivered safely after we removed the turn indicators and headlights. One more step to this Cal Looker being back on the road! STOKED!

One last parting shot.

What a treasure hunt it was in Ricks attic today.  I am still COVERED in dust.  There were some amazing finds.  Everything has been up there 25+ years.  Did I already mention dust?  That Hurst box is probably worth more than the damn shifter now.  42 DCNF's, Truehaft kadron manifolds, 356 horn, 2 piece 8 spokes in the box, heads, bumpers, a bitchen never used Berg merged dual can exhaust with tape still on the chrome tip....wow.  Vintage 70's skateboards... I could go on and on.  Boxes and boxes and boxes...  I heard when I left and Rick started going through everything a few more surprises were found.  We STILL have'nt found his motor Ha!  Found some color matched tin.....  Oh and theres a pretty cool Notchback thats been under wraps just as long.  The cloth cover had not been removed in 25 years.  Cool to see and would be another great project.  Jealous.

Some of the treasures included...

NOS 42 DCNFs
Berg DNCF Manifolds
Truehaft DP Kadron Manifolds... NOS but cut to match my heads
Kadron SP Manifolds
2 original DKK Tank Turret club stickers which predate the Vince Ito club stickers that everyone knows.

Octavio's has done a great job on the repairs. They chose to use the original spare tire well so I'll have that NOS one up for sale soon. Now that he has the fenders, the car should be ready to come home this week!

Hey Mark... you didn't post that "special" picture for Bob!  ;D

Hey, I was asking about that camber compensator, yesterday. Let me know if you'd like to part with that, Rick.

Interesting side note for Cal Look history's sake... the blue '67 in the background was sprayed by Becker's Bug House. The owner was there getting a quote for a new paint job. Good to see these old cars getting some love.

Normally I'd agree with you Randy but since that sticker has been on that window for almost 30 yrs I'm asking for a special dispensation from the rest of the club to allow that sticker to stay in place. However, if the club feels that it should be removed, I'll pull it without hesitation.

Current plans call for having the car spotted in by an artist who feels he can match not just the color but the shine of the original paint. We're gonna get it driving first. and actually it will probably have another trip to the body shop to get the rear fenders gone over. Then we'll have DKK Fred work his magic on what's left of the original paint. Then the touchup will begin.

Nothing Major. Been picking up parts here and there...

Wife is getting on me because I keep buying stuff but she hasn't seen the parts go on the car... I keep telling her that I gotta get the inside parts done first before I can bolt on the outside parts  ;) :D

During the Classic Weekend, Bill suggested that I may want to go with a different timeline for the project than the way I had been heading. I need to sit down with him and rethink a few things. In fact I was gonna call him tonight and see if he'd have some time to get together this week.  I don't know if Bill knows it but he's been drafted as "Project Manager"  ;D

Also during The Classic, I talked to Greg Brinton about his part in the project and when I can get the car over to his shop so he can lay hands (welder, wrenches, etc.) on it.  :D

Got Mike Herbert lined up to do the trans on it.

Talked to Fred and John Rayburn about helping with the "Shiny" part of the car too.

Really the best part of this project is that I get to have all my friends work on it with me.  ;)

Parts and more parts!

Picked up a set of Udo's finest lifters from V-Dub parts today. I was gonna talk to Udo direct about shipping a set over but when I found that V-Dub had them, it was too convenient.

Have all of the top end now and the valve train except for the camshaft.

Hi Rick, the 86C is a nice cam, thats what I'm running now, depending on what your going to do race or for hot street. Street dial in the cam, see where your at and advance it 2* to bring the power band down a little, watch it come alive. If you leave it, you'll have srtong mid/top end. Thats the way I have mine right now. It's a sweet cam.

By the way, I'm in on both the IDA member with 3 1/2 sets, member since late 70's and a JD member also. Great heads! ;D 8)

Ordered a beam and spindles from Russell at Old Speed.

Man that boy is smart about front ends. Ran some ideas past him and he convinced me to go with a more modern and accepted set up. I may not quite get the look that I want but he convinced me that I wouldn't be happy with the car if I went the way I was thinking.

I found a Unicorn...

[attachment=1]

I met John Nash at The Classic yesterday. He had a stack of pictures from the last Bug-In and from the DKK show at Irvine Park. As I was leafing through the stack, I came across this.
My car was only set up like this for at the most 6 weeks. I wrecked it less than a month after this was taken. The only other picture I have of it like this was a fuzzy shot that Mark Kessenich took.

I told John the story behind the picture and asked him if he could send me a scan of it. He insisted that I take the original.

Thanks John, it means a lot to me.

The fender in the foreground I believe is Henry Mayeda's 67 and the late model in the background is Scott Hall's

Thanks Rick. It was my first car too, bought in 1995 when I was 17. That photo was taken in 2011, on a Saturday morning, with the car having been finished on the Thursday night after being parked on my drive and ignored for about 4 years! I went to a wedding several years ago where the bride and groom left the  church in a 10 second street legal drag bug in a cloud of tyre smoke and the cake stand at the reception was the flywheel,  crank and rods from an alcohol V8 funny car!

Anyway, back on topic, without me going through the whole thread again, what's left to do on your car?

This wasn't my first car but it was my first VW. I had a '67 Mustang coupe then a '71 Fiat 124 Spyder before buying the '67. I was 19 when I bought it.

Body work has been done. One of the ironies of the crash was that the original German steel, US '67 front fenders were in my parents attic. We pulled them out and they are back on the car.

Next step is suspension and brakes. I had been waiting for a spot in Greg Brinton's shop to open up so I could have him do the work but last weekend fellow Deek Mark Ramirez generously offered to do some of the work. I'll need to work out the specifics but I may make him regret making that offer. ;)

It's gonna get rear discs and the rest of the brakes gone through. new lines, braided stainless hoses etc. I converted it to front disks in the late 70s with KG spindles and (I think) Type III calipers.

Suspension is gonna be new beam from Old Speed, with dropped spindles. Koni shocks. The rear is going to have SAW adjustable spring plates and short axles. I'm hoping to keep the Z-Bar if I can work it out.

It will need a motor and trans. I have about a third of the parts to put the motor together. Gonna be a 2332cc with those Jeff Denham heads & 48s. A little bit of an increase from 1776cc 48 motor that was in it when that pic was taken.

I'll have Mike Herbert help me out with a trans.

Got a couple of tricks for the interior & exterior.

The idea is to make it sympathetic to a car built in the late 70's, early 80's without being so nuts as to not take advantage of some of the later developments in technology.

The whole idea is to make it's Cal-Look survivor status it's biggest asset. Sure I could build it in a more modern way and make it all shiny and new but I think that would take away from it. It's provenance should be kept. When Bill and I started talking about pulling it out, he convinced me to go this way with it and I'm glad he did.

In August I decided to retrace the route from the story I told Keith and he included in his 2nd book on Cal-Look. This is where the entrance to OCIR went under the Santa Ana Freeway. Last time this car was here was in October 1983.
