Title: The Ultimate Cal-Look Garage
Post by: Rick Meredith on April 20, 2008, 19:26:33 pm
Let's play with any idea... the Ultimate Cal-Look Garage. What cars would be in your garage? Here are the rules.

1. Money is no object.
2. No minimum 5 Maximum.
3. Cars can be real or imaginary. Real cars don't have to still be in existence.
4. The larger Cal-Look spectrum is included i.e. they don't have to be traditional Cal-Look. Resto-Cal, pre-Cal, gasser looks, etc. are welcome.
5. Void where prohibited
6. Your mileage may vary.
7. Don't whiz on the electric fence.

Damn... I must be hanging out with Jim too much... this sounds like one of his topics.

I'll let you guys play with this for a while before I give you my Ultimate Cal-Look Garage... plus I have an Angels game to go to!

I love to admire them, but I really dont want a car someone else built. I like to make cars "mine", and I wouldnt have the heart to modify, say the Aronson car. I just want my cars to be "finished" :)

The GTV, with 5 speed and 88x82 motor, and, and, and...
My '67, kind of a street gasser if you will
I would take the Slingle Cab away from Slinger in a heartbeat
I'd love to finish Slinger's '60 ragtop choptop gasser
Wouldnt mind building up that old cabriolet of Slinger's too ::)

(The Purple) Deano Dyno Soar
Lightning Bug Again
Sonic Muffin
Shawn Geers DRKC Bug
My '63

I actually split my garage with my girlfriend so her half would probably include THE Green Car, ST DRAGN and her car and given it'd be a shame to waste the two remaining parking spots I'd put the Dave Perkins car in there along with The Quaife Car.

And all that said we'd already be planning an extension.

The idea of having the Ultimate Cal Look garage, is really what this all means to you. I think if you ask the "old Farts" their garages at that time were in a corner of the parent's deal, and space was a major issue! Room for one car, and perhaps a small work bench in the back... And that's how most of the early cars were built...  in the driveway.

To me, building a car was always limited to cash on hand, time to work on it, and getting the right parts. In a "perfect" Cal Look world, you would have the year of VW that you want, ultra low mileage of course, no rust isues, no former crash damage... mint, original, still on warranty condition! Then, time and money would have to be on your side. And, you knew where to get the parts. Once you got your OMG Bug of your desires, 1967 of course.... then it was just a matter of tearing into it, and getting started.... the right way! You would got over to Dee Berg and hand her a blank check for those NOS BRMs she has been storing for decades, then off to the various collectors and grab your selected Empi parts. You would be a Don Crane wantabe, but with the knowledge of today, you would be able to do it right the first time.

Would I want my old '67 back? Not sure. But I certainly would do things differently today. As cool as that car was, it had numerous problems as all hot rod cars usually do (horrible ride with Select-A-Drop, leaky heads, loose valve guides, crumy stereo). The problem I see is, with today's parts (5-speed, gearing, cranks, head work, etc), going back in time to 1972 would be tough, with only the time period parts. Or would  it? A lot of this overall question is a state of mind. Are you living the dream, and who's... your's or their's?

4. sephia brown ´67 from dirk/dfl
5. 356 irish green, american racing porsche 5x130, slightly lowerd

Sorry, I'm from another era and don't stay up to date with whatever's new. When I worked at the dealers, we called 'em natural finish, unmolested, factory finish, unpolished, etc. So, natural they are. Chrome was and will never be an option.

I guess I am different than most out there.  I am satisfied with the cars I own.  I just wish they were as they were back in their glory days.  Me I would rather fill my garage with more quality tools so I can do more than I can now.  I would like a nice lathe and end mill and a mig and tig welder.  I am already running out of room so I guess a larger garage would be in order to house all that.  ...and oh yeah the garage should have a lift to make it easier to work on the underside of the cars.

Yeah, one of my biggest problems is that my favorite project is always the next one. I truly admire people who have had their cars for years, or even decades. For me though, there are just so many cars out there that I want to experience. (VW and otherwise) I enjoy the build almost as much as I enjoy driving them. I will keep this '67 for a long time, but there will always be another car build on the horizon. At any one time I have two or three other projects whirling around in my head. (Currently a '70s style buggy, an early 911, a long hail all terrain Bug for a trip to the polar circle & a '54 Chevy pickup.)

I'd want my own '67 with all of its stupid little glitches fixed (first would be hot carb BS), new fresh paint, bumpers redone, my dream interior. Time to work on it and clean it and room to do so as well. My garage looks like Baby's R Us and a VW speed shop tried some futile attempt at a business merger.

Kind of like those strip malls here in The Valley.....  "Mr. Lee Donuts, Videos and Mufflers"

I'm going to buck the trend and not pick any existing car! Instead I'm choosing 5 cars I'd love to build!

1. black '60's Karmann Ghia, detailed Fuchs, 2007 IDA motor. One piece bumpers, full trim.
2. Porsche Guards red oval, blacked out handles, again detailed fuchs and a 2007 or 2165 IDA motor. Real late 70s/early 80s car!
3. late model ('68-'71) bug, maybe black with red interior, maybe beige with brown, original empi 8's, 2276 IDA motor
4. split window ragtop, BRMs and big IDA motor (theme here!), dechromed and de-bumpered, early 70's porsche colour
5. a gasser, tube axle, lots of aluminium panelling, metalflake and gold leaf! Dangerous but cool!

Why would you wish for your own cars? ...you already have them ;-)

Not wishing.  I just don't want someone else's car.  Haven't we had that discussion.  It will always be their car.
I just want to bring my car back to it's previous glory such as it was...

I guess I am different than most out there.  I am satisfied with the cars I own.

Why would you wish for your own cars? ...you already have them ;-)
I guess most of us have our cars because we want them? :)

Well if you noticed... most of us wanted our cars FINISHED!   ;) ;)

Yes we probably have. My point wasn't that you should want anybody else's car, but rather that you could show us what other cars you wanted (unbuilt cars, in you imagination)... since they are free  8)

I agree with you on the bit about wanting other peoples cars, to many are wasting their time wanting some one else's version of the cal looker  instead of listening to their inner voice and build their own "version".... IMHO

OK here goes.

1. My 59 Ragtop

2.  A 58 Speedster w/ over rider bumpers, faded orig black paint, hardtop w/ metalflake Union Jack painted over entire top, sort of like you see on Mini's, Mag Berms or American 5's w/ polished drums, 82 x 88 roller crank slipper skirt motor w/ short IDA's & a Mag.

3. 69 Vert Ghia, 5.5 & 6 Alloys,  mild 2400cc motor ,5 speed 4 wheel disc. Dark metallic grey with a loud plaid interior, sort of early 911 styling.

4. My 55 back, zolotone interior, mag Berms, Ti valve, Ti rod, VW head roller cam motor lots of compression ,low gears, does wheelies,  drive it on the street..

5.My 77 Westfalia,  big 911 motor, air cond. trailer hitch to tow cars 1 thru 4 home if something falls off 1 of them.

I have another list for Hot Rods & American cars.  cool thread   Bill

Not sure I could limit that list to five cars from one maker. And it would change almost every day.  :D

I would want the top to look like a 60's or 70's metalflake motorcycle helmet, it could be a few other things also other than a Union Jack, it would be there to further cheese off the Porsche goons

1.  Gurney era Inch Pincher.
2.  Aronson's.
3.  Jim Moore's Notch, or in lieu of that, my old one back with a few changes..........
4.  My blown '62, finished as I would like to do it.
5.  My other '62 completed...........see above...........

6.  The time to build and maintain them.

That's like my idea of a '63 Corvette roadster with a tube chassis and a big IDA VW motor in the back! :D

HAHAHA!!! That's awesome! Two thumbs up for that one, Neil. Can't stand 'Vettes, but I'd drive that car.

I'll play, I'm kinda bored.

1. Finish my Java Green '67
—Thorough refurbish:  respray, tidy up the pan with needed mechanical upgrades and a tough coating.  Nice interior.  A very presentable 70s style car.
2. Start and finish my '57 sunroof
—Road tripper, nice interior, 6" Fuchs around, good tires, mid-tune turbo/F.I. power (about 300 should be fine).
3. Future '67
—Lightweight, kinda basic, 2276 w/IDAs and close box.  Yukon yellow, black minimalist interior, chromies.
3. Daily driven Baja Bug.  Gas heater, sealed up well against northeastern USA winters.  Approximate copy of HVW mileage motor.

And space for storage and work!

same reason I want to build some sort of hot-rod 1/4-mile 356SC, dump the 356 motor in the garbage, stuff a 2.7L Type 4 in it's place with IDAs, FAT shroud, open headers, shaved, no bumpers, slammed front axle, Americans or 1967 911S alloys, gutted interior. Maybe paint it ochre yellow or metallic 70's gold.
