Title: Funny Car Summer, No Volkswagens!
Post by: ESH on July 16, 2008, 12:26:53 pm
I noticed the other night whilst watching Funny Car Summer that in one of the scenes shot at OCIR there's a question asked of a spectator as to what they liked best and I'm pretty sure their answer's something along the lines of " the Volkswagens, but they're not here ".

Damn things get everywhere!  :D

The whole damn car's the shit! Not wishing to detract too much from technological advancement but the old stuff looks so much better than those blobs they have now.

Those were the days. I spent my childhood at Lions Dragstrip, Old Irwindale (home of the original In and Out Burger) and OCIR. My dad ran an Injected nitro funny car back then and the memories of the cars and people from that era will never leave me. That was a great time. Being twelve years old and having Miss Hurst, Linda Vaughn at your house for dinner! WOW! I even remember the Volkswagens, mostly the Durachrome Bug.

It sure looks like a good time to have experienced the drags, how many years was your dad racing?  :)

Raced his own cars from the 50's to the mid Seventies, he bought his last funny car from Mert Littlefield / Sublett (ex-Air Force sponcered Vega). He is still active in racing with the NHRA and travels to most all the races. He hangs out with a bunch of guys from So. Cal. (Maddern Racing) It's the Peen Rite sponcered Top Alchohol Dragster with Chris Demke driving. Check out some of their videos on You Tube under CDemke or Peen Rite Top Alchohol Dragster. Last winter (Winternationals) we got Schwimmer and the Fastbrit to come out and visit us at the track. Remember Cory Mclanethan got his start racing VWs!

Oh ya, it still is a great time

Five decades trackside is quite something, he's pretty much seen the entire history of drag racing! Progress is never a bad thing but to soemone that wasn't there there's something to be said for the way it was. I suppose if you lived it then it's just progress, if you just missed out it's something you'll always wonder about. Funny Car Summer came out in '74 I think and at the time I was 2 and in the film there is a world within which there are elements I can relate to but being just too young and on a different continent there's also that which is distant and I suppose 'exotic'. I also have spent a lot of time looking into the World Sportscar and Can Am stuff probably for the same reason. I'd be the first to say that this era is amazing for so many reasons, look into our own scene and cars like the Red Baron and that much is obvious as it is when you consider side-by-side '4s' are the norm at the top end of the sport but there's something about a vintage 200mph funny car or one of those old Volkswagens...

I'll check out Maddern Racing.  :)

I'll second that! The old funny cars had a soul. The new ones are just out of a vending machine with different colors and stickers.

I'm looking forward to seeing some of the new Nostalgia F/Cs - my only fear is that they turn into just a crappy version of the normal ones, similar to the Nostalgia Fuel Altered Association over here. IMHO, that class had so much promise, but has been let down by some really ugly cars. Technically they are superb and definately run the numbers, but I think the paint jobs and to a large extent the bodyshells used are horrendous. Really only the Havoc (Nick Davies and Rob Loaring from ICE) car looks like it should. A couple of the Topolinos are ok (Matt Wright's especially) but not Nostalgia cars - just funny cars with an altered shell. :(

With the NFAA some of the cars are better than others for sure, it'll be interesting to see how the Nostalgia F/Cs work out. Cool idea, let's hope they can sustain a good field.

There is something about them! :)

All excellent shots.  I'd like to know for sure, but this looks like a very early Maple Grove Raceway, not too far from where I am at.  The farmer's fields give it away.

Actually, now after looking at some other pics, I'd say it was York US-30.  Nevermind.   ;)

That's Larry Meyer (he's a crew chief) & his wife Maureen in the background, The Mad Magazine deal was originally with Toliver, but he pawned it off to Dale Creasy when he got the WWF deal. It's Densham's NEC car in the background on the lift gate.

Got to love the old funny cars. The look soooo bad tempered!!! and the American spindle mounts on the Dunn Reath car looks so right!! Cant wait to use my pair ;D anyone know of a A-Ford front suspension. It has to be a straight tube or the ones with a bend at the ends(I think both these types are aftermarket parts). The originals one are an I beam and made of cast iron(waaay to heavy) if I remember correctly. Not easy to find in Norway

BTW, really cool having a chat with you Mat. I think it was sunday morning at SCC. We have some similar ways of thinking when it comes to 70`s gassers :D
Hope I`m not highjacking your tread with my questions...

It's kinda' one of those threads that doesn't really have a point as such so it's not like there's an issue with it getting hijacked.

I know of a couple of places that may be able to help, I can mail some details over later if that's of any use?

It was a cool conversation for a Sunday morning over a strong coffee, it's funny how you get to meet people sometimes. I was quite amused by the ingredients you'd come up with, there isn't one like it out there but I can say with some certainty that I really like the idea! Then again, I think you possibly already figured that out?

;D These pix are great! I'll tell ya a lil story........When I was about 6 years old, my father used to take my brother and I to the drags. Lion's, Irwindale, & OCIR. We were at Lion's one afternoon & some dude with one of those spaceman (yea, Fred, I said spaceman) firesuits walked by & slapped me on the back and said "Are ya havin' a good time kid?". Now the cool thing was, he actually paused & waited for me response. As it turns out, some 25 years later & after I started working with fuel teams, that dude was Don Prudhomme. i didn't know it back them (it was just some spaceman guy) LOL Now, he comes over & sits with me on the golfcart at the starting line during qualifying sessions at National events. !  When I told him this story, he said "Jesus, yer maikin me feel old dude" LOL I remind him almost everytime I see him that he IS old!  On occaision, I make him laugh so hard he almost swallows the freakin' toothpick he's always got in his mouth ;D

COOL story, McNew! I recently ran across that Densham shirt that you got me back in 2002 or '03 when you, Ramirez, my sons, and I all met up at Irwindale Raceway. My boys still talk about that day... walkin' around in the pits and seeing all of those machines up close. Good times!

Those old five spoke American spindle mounts were always one of my favorites.  I feel fortunate to have had the Halibrands (still got 'em under the workbench) and the twelve spoke Americans, though I sure as hell don't miss the maintenance :P ;D

I'm fortunate in that I can hang around the pits when I go racing as my younger brother is the clutch man for a Nito funny car team over here 8). there seems to be a bit of a funny car revival at the moment in europe I think there are about 8 serious teams out there at the moment which must be the most there has been for about 20 years. I love watchin the funny cars run they are so unpredictable it's great in a scarey kind of way :o

here is a shot of the car my brother works on (he's the one holding the body up while they remove the throttle stop after the burnout in the second shot)

Never actually saw these cars run in the sixties..........  However, I read every drag racing magazine I came across back then, as well as built as many kids plastic models of these.  Just fully absorbed each issue and stared at every picture......  wow.   What a GREAT thread.  My all time favorite was the Hawaiian, and the Revel, Revelution.  Jungle Jim and of corse the two most popular racers of that era, Don "the snake"Prudohme, and Tom "mongoose" McEwen.  The best rivalry anywhere......... EVER.

Awesome thread.  Keep em coming.

Once in awhile, while in high school in the 70's (ouch) we would see an old timer roll out on like Fox Hunt night at OCIR or sumthin'.  64 Funny Cars!!!!!  BE THERE, BE THERE, BE THERE............. OHHHHHH SEEEEEE EYEEEEEEE AREEEEEE................... ha

Cool photos, Matt!  You may want to search out the latest (September) Hot Rod magazine... :o :o 8) ;)

I remember Jim Dunn one night was running short of race funds and not wanting to 'waste' the money on Nitro for the cackle fest at the start of the program -- Had Joe Turner act like he was firing the car and then stand there and shake the body back and forth like it was running.  Damn that was funny. Jim says afterwards as the promoter was asking why he didn't fire his car, ' Damn -- I can buy 5 pistons for what I'd would wasted in buying fuel for that shit.'

Harold,  Big Jim Dunn wasn't the only one short on funds. As a poor teenager I used to sneak into OCIR in the trunk of my buddies 65 bug (minus the spare) to watch the "Firemans Quickie" and cars like his.

So poor, that during the big fueler meets we could only watch from the eucalyptus trees across the freeway from the track. So poor that I never tasted
"track food" at OCIR.

Instead we feasted on the best the times had to offer....The early funny cars, the first "back motor" dragsters and the out of control Altereds. And my favorite, standing a safe distance behind the Jet powered cars at the starting line and going home reeking of JP 4.

Watching Dean, Darrel, Paul, and Rich hide from the V8 Chevy's.....Absolutely  Priceless

I only hope that the current generation has the chance to feel the same kind of excitement that we felt....and that their moms have a good sense of humor.  ;)

Phil, we didn't grow up with a lot of money, but I did grow up very lucky, My dad had drag raced before I was born and continued many years after. I was lucky enough to experience LIONS, Old Irwindale, Ontario, OCIR, Bakersfield (orig March Meets). My kids have an appreciation for what their grandpa did and accomplished and enjoy going to Pomona a couple times a year, they both love NITRO and they both love the feeling of having your entire body feel the concussion of 16,000 horsepower go by you at 300 MPH...............and so do I! My dads last funny car. (he and Tom Ridings bought it from Mert Littlefield)
