Its funny seeing the magenta under the orange.  I remember seeing that Magenta car on a trailer for sale at a swapmeet here in Ohio.  Some guy named Matt bought it that weekend.

So, whats your plans Mags.  Will you make it Orange again?

Big Bad Beige has a nice ring to it or even Big Bad Burple  ;D

Not trying to be a smart A$$ here, seriously.

Just curious, if you are changing the paint, interior, engine and pretty much everything else...why didnt you buy a stocker in Europe?

Looks like it will be a great car when you finish though! Have fun!  :)

Hi Mags the answer to your question is You are right on the Money, the Rule of thumb is to  tie a string to the headlight mounting screw and the pull it tight to the bumper slot opening on early cars you use the top of bumper slot and on late cars you use to bottom of the slot once you make the measurements' on your fender then just find the center of the light and make your hole see the early and late pictures of the best way to measure them hope this helps your car is looking good  Thanks Gary

Thanks Richie,Roll cage its okey from Rally Produkter, its also for FIA ::)
See you next weekend,

Mags, that could be the problem - each type of racing has it's own set of regulations. FIA oversees the MSA, which we run to in the UK, but the rules were adapted from the NHRA rules, which were written for big lumbering 3-ton American cars, not our little bugs. That's why we have to have the bigger footplates. We're also not allowed bolt together cages in drag racing, but I've been told that rally car cages have to be bolted together so that the specification of the bolts can be checked!

Here you can find the FIA cage rules; (copy/paste the whole link)

http://argent.fia.com/web/fia-public.nsf/3B508127A498C9ABC12573A90051BFA3/$FILE/2009-DessinsDrag%20_10.11.08.pdf

And here are the complete drag racing rules from FIA;

http://www.fia.com/sport/Regulations/dragregs.html

Regarding the NHRA rules you need to buy their rule book but I find it a bit strange if the cage rules is different from the FIA rules. Agree?

choosing a color... not easy! :)

I'd say some shade of blue, or maybe white/light ivory or Porsche olive green or gold metallic?

anyway, here's some inspiration:

http://www.356-911.com/modelinfo/911colours/911colours.htm
http://www.356-911.com/modelinfo/911colours/911colours6970.htm
http://www.356-911.com/modelinfo/911colours/911colours7173.htm

And that's only porsche color, but i like to stay in the family.. ;)

From the picture I assume it's not going to be a street car anymore. You painting it L20B orange again? Did ya keep all the dash plaques, empi wheel, and Old Berg shifter? Gonna be a wild car for sure when it hits.

Title: Re: Big Bad under modification

It was a shame to see the old Big Bad taken apart, but I must admit...the pan looks badass.  And Mags you seem very skilled, so I can't wait to see the final product.

Matt, don't feel too bad, the guy who bought my old '65 changed a bunch of stuff on it, and then Deano Kirsten told me it was stolen from the new owner's storage and stripped....but he liked the car so much he is rebuilding it I hear.

Title: Re: Big Bad under modification
Post by: Matt H on February 19, 2011, 14:15:36 pm
Not feeling bad , it aint mine no more!!! I cant wait to see the finished products. It looks like it's gonna be on a truntable with lights and mirrors under it. That pan is cleaner than well............. I dont know , but its really clean. With the trans, irs ,and roll bar I cant tell if it's going German Look, Rally Car, or just plain dont F with me cause I got lots of HP, a roll bar, and you dont!! I just hope all the cool old parts that were on it didnt go to the scrap heep. Lots of time collecting alll that stuff and would look real nice in another Cal Look car and most guys would be all over that stuff.

Title: Re: Big Bad under modification
Post by: Matt H on February 20, 2011, 17:27:37 pm
I would like to do another one someday. I would go more for a 60's drag car vibe on the street thing like the guys in Europe are doing. I hate calling them Gassers, but I guess they were minus the straight axle and sky high stance of their american couterparts.Think H/gas on the street. No Trim, Lots of striping, some flake, fiberglass front seats up front, minimal interiior, Have to go BRM knock offs or DDS knockoff / Erco wheels. Same motor and trans combo as my old car ( very streetable and would rip in an even lighter car ). Oh the car would have to be pre 64. No I never think about another one ;D

Oh yeah it would be orange too!!!! and the metalflake on the roof would blind ya!!!

Nice!
but isn't the cage too much at the back of the car? It could be a little bit narrower to the b-post..?  ???
What trigger-wheel is it on the engine?
Thank you.  ;)

If you're thinking about the roll cage it has been in there for almost five years and is in most of the pictures posted earlier. But I guess it became a bit more visible now. Red has been one of the options since page one of the thread.
Even if the car will be very different than it was before I think you'll like the finished product  :)

Mags, I'd black out the window surrounds. If you get some from a 1200 model they were painted silver,  not chromed so are easier to paint. I painted the handles and rear light trims satin black on my red car, and the headlight rings in body colour.

Holy crap...you have really taken this car to a whole new level...a long way from the metallic magenta bug I bought off a classifieds ad hanging on the wall at Larrys VW in Dayton Ohio.

Car looks great!  Matt did you buy another vw yet.

Title: Re: Big Bad under modification

Nope no VW Mike...got friends building them, so I live vicariously through them and try to steer them away from squatting rear ends, 2 tone paint jobs, and chrome tin...

Still have my old F100 and 61 Sunliner...I wouldn't be opposed to doing another VW...it would have to be a period correct gas class car I could drive on the street...think 55 gasser that are so popular now...,just built to the era when the Bugs were giving the 6 cylinder Chevys abs fords fits in the h, j classes....wild paint, aluminum interior, 2 seats, dropped front end, Ercos or fake BRM, t bars....basically a kick ass Cal Look bug with a wild paint job I guess ha ha

How bout you? Still doing the Porsche thing?

Corny joined me on the dark side and bought. 63 Riv...
