This 67 i got from the US the guy i got it from built a 2109cc motor for it drove from California to Colorado a number of times. I use it for two year as my daily driver. It was also driven to Das Drag Day and race all weekend then back home to the UK. Then i sold it to Frank this year he took the motor out and freshen it up. This year he drove from the UK to Euro Bug In race it all weekend then drove it to Berlin then Back to the UK.

So if you ask me it a steet car. ;D

what's not street about them? only thing i can see that vary from street trim is the lack of decklids?

AAaah, I guess this topic has been beaten to dead on every possible car&bike forum: what is a street car/bike.  ::)

But I have to agree, even though e.g. the Outlaw cars are great, I don't really think they can be considered street cars. They are proper racecars to me, cars purely built for racing. Ever lighter, ever faster. I have to admit I don't know if they drive them apart from the 1/4 mile (and maybe from and to the track). But I bet mostly none of them ever participated in a ralleye.

Cars like Jelle's (LowFastBus), now that is a streetcar, with the wear and tear to show for it. Runs at club do's all year long and it gets raced every once in a while with mid 13ns  to show for it. Nicolas fasty is a streetcar, has been at the bugtour and has been on the track. Lee's Buggy, definately a street car, or do we consider his trip to SCC as from and to the track  ;D

And even though watching the outlaws and similar racing is marvellous, seeing the Messiah launch his 67 daily driver in Bitburg trying to get the best of his 1600, resulting in a 17.35 is almost as exiting or at least interesting  ;) Too bad street cars often don't come trailered  ::) Biturg is a long way from home  :-\

I have a sneaky suspicion we are going to have a game of 'what's a street car and what's not a street car tennis' here. The trouble is, it often comes down to the country in which a person resides. In the US for @*&ks sake they seem to get away with slicks on the street :o. Now call me old fashioned, but dem's purely race tyres and have no place on regular roads.

Here in the UK the laws are relatively lenient regarding what you can and can't do with a car. All-out modification doesn't seem to affect our mot tests. YET!. Our Euro buddies however, have far stricter licensing laws and cannot get away with half as much as we do, therefore their idea of a street car will be lot different to ours...

Like Marting says: "roll out the popcorn" coz this could be one long thread with no definitive answer ???

Sadly I can’t lay claim to this being a street car as I have never picked anyone up from school in it and I know for a fact that it has been on a trailer, several times in fact. More than that though; at one point there were some sissy sticks in the garage it’s kept in.

Driving a car down the road to "test" a gearbox or to set mapping up dosnt mean its a street car in my books

Iv done this many times in MOT'd race cars including a lemans GT40 entrant and i dont call it a street car sorry.

Street Car = A reguarly used car or sunny day car, Driven to and from the track every year without any slicks in my book.

If it gets trailered there, pushed to the start line, then raced, put back on a trailer, then placed in a garage till the next race its not a street car, even if has got MOT, tax and insurance

And if I have offened anybody about there cars im sorry but I was only saying what I thought (freedom of speech  ;))

It only took me 10 minutes to figure out how to scan and save this picture, so it may be a while before I try that again.

Here is my DRKC 56 Rag in the Right lane and the DRKC 53 Zwit in the left. Buddy Rick Eichler gets credit for the nice wheelie launch, and I rolled out with a street tranny and 8:1 CR motor. Rick ran a high 11 I ran a low 13.2. Same motor is now in the Blue car with tweeking and ran a 12.8 in the 1/4 at the last NASA race in Sac.

A street car. We drove to EB2 from Scotland via a ferry  :). It has ran a 13.6 this year belt etc etc. In an other stock weight bug with slicks the same engine has produced a 12.5 with a better driver.  ;D

Its more of a garage car rather than a street car. An original California 67 bought from Dom the burnout king. We love it.

I don't normally get involved with the whole internet posting thing too much however I would just like to say do you include my car in your above reply?

Raced since 1994 never trailered I don't even own one!
The closest track is 100 miles away
Driven to Chimay Bug In 1 ran 8th quickest and drove home
Full interior excluding back seats at the track
1973lbs with driver
10.91 et
This year best 11.02, 11.04 and driven home 280 mile round trip
80mph on the motorway crusing
No belt and I did run slicks


I gota say though I do agree with you when you say no slicks and run a charge (belt) and I think normal fuel ie no bio or race fuel, just the normal stuff you can pick up from any pump!!

Ps No slicks with treds, I mean Dot E marked tyres!!!

Im not a Expert on what is a "street" car and what isnt, just my honest opinion.

But on the above I would count this as a street car, as long as you promise to run cooling next time lolol :D ;D

Dot's will get you throu a MOT so I guess there street legal, but I think to be a full street car you've got to run treads. ;)

(im probs just causing more problems but again im allowed to voice my own opinion and im not try to cause a problem, contary to what some ppl may think.)

A street car is not less of a street car if you go to the track, put slicks on it and remove the fanbelt. Those changes are for e.t. improvement.

Stirring the pot. The green '55 above runs 11.5s shifting the big engine at 6500rpm, with belt, on street tires, pump gas, naturally aspirated (no gas, no turbos), mufflers, without taking anything out of the car (except the tool box and some air out of the rear tires; 1976lbs = 897kg). A couple of years ago it ran hi 12s and was driven to races, nowadays it is trailed. Does it qualify as a street car?

Here's the other one, the '65 turbo that ran 9.8s with belt, street tires, muffler, without taking anything out of the car for racing (2042lbs = 927kg). Also this one was (and will be) trailered to races. How about his one, does it qualify as a street car? And yes, before Ritchie reminds us, it has sissy bars at races.

Everyone knows you cheat!   That "track" you race at is downhill and only 1000 ft.  Besides, you always stage with your rear tires and have your best mate trip the finish line with his foot.   :-*

Here is my favorite launch shot.  Havent been to the track in a couple years, but I did drive it to Home Depot last week.  Threw a 40 lb bag of brick morter in the front floor and drove it home.  Lets see Paul Bate do that!  :D ;)

Ok,I will bite,so say on average I do 70 passes a year,average ET of 10.50 so by your theory I need to only drive my car 70x10.5=735 seconds or 12.25 minutes ::) so only counting the cruise in las vegas this year I managed 2 times that so mine is a genuine street car,excellent :P :D ;D

Surely if its street legal it’s a street car and I’m not sure why people get all hot under the collar about it. 

For me there are loads of great cars pictured here, some more street-able than others, but you can bet the faster the car the more compromised it is on the street, but that’s just the owners choice, and I for one am glad we have both.

So the only real question is what compromises are you going to make?

Just for the record, Gary Bergs 67! I can’t believe it took so long for it to appear on this thread. The first of the ultimate has everything Cal-look street cars? Now that could start an argument!

Why havent I seen any pictures of Jimmy Roth's 67 from years ago? That car was tough as nails and he drove it like a bat out of hell. Now anyone that can drive a beast like that and drive off of instinct not sounds, is truly worthy of this thread. and i know he drove it!

Sure is and always has been.  Paint is pretty tired at this time and has plenty of rock chips and two dents in the driver side front fender thanks to a shelf collapse in the garage.

PS yes my car does run a belt & cooling,with "pump gas" bio fuel available from Morrisons supermarkets but i do run slicks at the track as the car is quicker and SAFER this way,if thats not good enough in you book,I dont care >:(.Its the way I choose to run my car.

This is one of my favourite photos I have ever taken: 'Lil Pete' Shattock's 1776cc screamer launching hard at Bug Jam 2003. For those of you unfamiliar with the car, it is driven to the track, has the mufflers and street tyres replaced with stinger/slicks and then is driven like it was stolen! Runs 12.2 second quarters, has the street 'gear' bolted back on and is then driven 150 miles home. To me, this car is the absolute proof that you can build a competitive street and strip car that is at home both on the street and track.

For me, Bug Jam 2003 was perhaps the pinnacle of interesting street cars turning up and blasting huge wheelies, then being driven home... 8)

Drove to Avon Park, wrung it's neck and broke something in the valvetrain, then had to buy an A-frame and beg a tow home! Well, it's a street car, why would you need a trailer? :D

now that i know he drives it everywhere and doesn't trailer it, i have even greater respect for that car

I agree with Sarge, UD you look great in the launch pic. Not too far off note, but that was the first episode of the Munsters my two boys ever watched with me and how fitting it was a drag race show.

Bring this one back from the dead with my '67

Behind IGUANA , that is (was , because of no engine at this moment) . Drove it for years with a Typ 4 engine on the road all over here in germany and to races from france to holland , belgium , even to sweden ! Even holliday trips , i did with that car.
Only the last year it was trailered to EBI 1 and to Budel , because of testing and making it not streetable within the laws here in germany anymore....

Runs 14's so not as fast as some on here, but still feels good.

True. And with everything on film it is easy to see and correct. If it drop that much on the street you can be pretty certain it will be worse when you drop the tire pressure and give it 3000 more rpms in the launch on a prepped strip.  :D

But even at a run what you brung/test n tune you are told you must at least wear long sleeve top and long trousers,it amazes me how often you see even a pure racecar video and the driver isnt wearing gloves.I guess they will learn after its too late :o

Eric Ellis had posted one of the Blue Car back in 2008 when we still have the Porsche alloys.
At the risk of igniting a "What is a Street Car" debate, the Blue Car is far from a daily driver, but does see the occasional squirt on the street. Still has current tags and insurance. Less of a street car than some, more so than others. This was at a West Coast Hot Rod event in late March
