Car not for me, as chop-tops don't really do it for me.

I can only think of 3 chop top cars that stood out and were my favorite of all time these were Dave Wright from Keep on Bugging with the original BRM, Mike Martinez from DKP with alloys , and Keith Goss also from DKP  with alloys.

The curve is a little off in the back. Makes it looked mooshed. Nice car otherwise though.

I agree with Frenchy... Those three are outstanding street legal chop tops.

I'm still looking for the old Hot VW's issue with Dave Wright's car on the cover...

Here's a pic of my big window chop.
Can't you take more height out of a big window bug before it starts to look out of proportion because there is more height to get rid of? (before you get pillar box windows.)

Looks great, Mags ;)

I can't wait to get back on this project... 4" front and rear, B pillars are a bit less to put the curve back in the roof... rear window will have the same ratio to the quarter windows as it did stock... should have great proportions :)

Some history facts of first Croatian topchop:

Phase 1: 1995 year, one of the first photos after purchase...

Phase 2: 1996 year, painted in white (new floors & heater channels...), new Empi 8 spoke (now they are mine :D), installed 1776ccm engine and Kadron K-300 exhaust !

Phase 3: 1999 year - installed original sunroof and new dual quiet pack exhaust !

Phase 4: 2000 year, final look in the autumn that year. Later modifications are more in terms of suspension, brakes, gearbox & engine, not in the look !

At the time (1997. year) this was one of the nicest VW bugs in Zagreb, capital city of Croatia. From my personal taste, vw bug can look nice without plastic add-ons that were so popular among bug lovers in Croatia.
I still remeber how cool was to see a white bug (model is '72 VW 1300), lowered (equaly front & rear) on nice Empi's 8 with a little bit different and sharper engine sound than from usual stock motor taking action at the stop lights !
From the first look I knew this guy was totally into bugs, just like me and just by watching new modifications taken to the car.
Actualy, it took me several years to meet him and by now we are good friends and now i know some more how it all started. He even sold me his Empi 8 spokes that I will put on mine '70 VW 1300 bug that is waiting on restoration. This will be a sort of hommage to that car before topchop makeover in terms of wheels and lowering job, but with different paint and some other details.
All in all another looker under construction !  ;)

I really like it! I'd detail the Fuchs, lose the bumpers and maybe put some slightly taller rear tyres on, but that's all.

I know what Zach says about small window cars looking better chopped, maybe because it's more obvious? Some big window chops don't look chopped at all, or look over chopped. Mine was an angle chop but looked ok because it had been de-guttered too.

I think later body chops look fine if done right. I like the one I drive...it is proportional and looks right with the back window done in proportion to the sides and front. CHOP TOPS and I/GAS RULES!

Post by: Doktor on December 04, 2008, 10:36:18 am
Not only you think that...

If you look carefully at the red topchop, you can notice that rear side windows are longer and more simetrical to the front side windows than on other topchop's from this topic.
This is my fauvorite detail on the red car. 8)

Doktor,

I like your car. I think it is well done.  Who's 911 fan set up did you use on the car? Also, how well does it cool your motor and hold oil temps down? Where did you end up running your cooler at and what type do you have?

Rick M

Post by: Doktor on December 08, 2008, 09:35:49 am
@ Rick M: hello...

Red topchop is not my car, his owner is my good friend...

Fan setup is from CSP from Germany. It has just front mounted oil cooler and that's it !
AFAIK oil temps are in 90 degrees of celsius - no overheating problems (12:1 compression ratio !)

The only one I've got of mine on my works computer...

(http://muchos.co.uk/members/neil hab2/Headstraight - bigbang03.jpg)

Chopped by 3 3/4" at the windscreen, 2 1/2" at the B-posts, pie-cut in the C-pillars and de-seamed, which made the chop look a lot less angular and wedge-like.

Up from the grave...
Some cool old top chop photos I found via:

D - meeting (Castrop-Rauxel) 1993:
I really like and liked the black one,a  perfect chop.

D - meeting 92:

Of course 1-3 cars could even be in the worst of theme. But I find it really interesting how "radical" the scene back then was with many top chops, flip fronts and complex build overs. Of course many weren`t very stylish in the view of today, but when you compare it to the scene of today it is much more decent without those really wild creations...

Thanks for the info fabs. As I remember right I changed a few words with him but he barely spoke english.
As I understood right the chop was made by himself?!

Nice car and refreshing to see a chopped 34 gasser on the track.
Guess we´ll see his new toy now more often than his 34.
