Title: Verts as Cal-look
Post by: louisb on December 31, 2008, 02:48:58 am
Most Cal-lookers seem to be hard tops. Probably because they weigh less and are cheaper. Were verts ever thought of as real cal-look material? Any famous verts in the old days? Anyone have a favorite vert cal-looker? How about some pics of Cal-look drop tops.

Mike, that's a pretty cool looking 'vert.

I remember when Metz first built and brought out his 'vert. He was years ahead of the scene in regards to how the car ended up looking. I couldn't stop staring at it during the last Bug-In at O.C.I.R. I've posted pictures that I've taken of the car somewhere on The Lounge. If I can't find 'em, I'll do a few re-scans. By far, my all-time favorite late Cal Look convertible. Especially when it had the old wheels on it with the first factory paint scheme only around the lugnut areas. Timeless and classic.

That red, oval era convertible is very nice. Shubee do you know anything about the blue oval in the background. It looks like a chop top with no engine vents, but a cabriolet decklid. The quarter windows have a different shape too.

Here are a couple I took.

One of my all-time favourite cars, one other favourite 'Vert was Wayne Elam's (in Volksworld around 1996-97?) black '65(?) but don't have any photos of that one.

I think this car was featured in Volksworld in the mid nineties, did he also have a brown 68ishh with rivieras?  If so I'm sure it was featured.

Nice 'vert, Sarge. I dig the no chrome touch on the running boards... looks very at home on that car.

I really like this one! What a good looking car. Great stance and my favorite color.

If it was the same as the Volksworld featured one, it was a Hunsaker-brothers car - I just can't remember which brother! :D

The ultimate one without chrome is Richie Webb's car. T-bars, lucas indicators, nose down and gasburners. Pure cal look!

Yep, that was mine.
The car was a common site, white and mostly in stock form, back in the Camelot & Carl's Jr. days in Anaheim.
I bought it off of Tim & Carla Schull (s/p?) and spent a year restoring it.
The color was a non-metallic dark blue, the darkest I could find at the time.
Dyno brokered the sale to Bill Taramino shortly after it was finished as I got in way over my head money-wise trying to finish it.
It's strange to see it in print in the Cal-Look book after 20 years.
Thanks for that pic Sarge, got any others? Ken.

Nice to finally put a name to a picture, Ken... Greg Brinton pointed you out recently.  That was a sweet looking car and I bet the guys would like to hear more about it (as well as some Camelot / CJ's tales ::) ;)).  Here's another pic for you from the reunion with the Berglar, Lazenby's '63 and your Vert as well as another I've been trying to figure out who's who in... any ideas on the sepia late model or the red car on the left?   My apologies for screwing up the thread here, folks! ;)

It was a GTV from Econo Motors. Jim worked there at Empi and for The Race Shop. I don't understand what you mean by a look alike, a GTV was not necesarily built by the dealer. Only a small number were built, most came in a box, or some were put together piece by piece over time. As far as the car goes, Jim was in a messy divorce and fell off the face of the Earth many years ago.
I agree with you Fabian. Those 16" fuchs dont belong on that car :-X

That's what I was saying also. If that car was built today, it would probably receive some GBs.
But it's been like that before some of you guys were even born, so saying the wheels 'don't belong to the car' is a bit ridiculous...  ::)
Yes, the fashion has changed, but that is what makes this car so great (and the likes of the Goss/Seume/Richie top chop, or Doug Mische's Ghia, etc...)

So since it was built long time ago (but after I was born ;)) or belongs to "too famous person in the scene" nobody can present any opinions about it? Well, it did look better in the Volksworld feature with the detailed 16" Fuchs and, IMO, less agressive rake would also work better with those wheels and tires.

No, all I'm saying is these wheels do belong to the car, since it's been like this for so long.

Would look good on a shaved and lowered cal-looker.

One from the DKP reunion... I "think" it belonged to Ken Cervone ???

Hi Sarge,
Is that the car that Dyno Don did a detailing article for Hot Vws on back in the early to mid 90's, I remember that car having a 1776 with 48 idas.

David

Yep, same car. it lost the 5 BRM's after I sold it, ::) and was fitted with Chromies & Porsche caps.
The car was sold again to another local Anaheim guy, about a block from my work, who painted it Guards Red.
Since the car was sold back in '89 it has remained within 2 miles of my house, but it's still always strange to see it after all of these years.

Ken.

ahhh...remember that car well..sold it 87 to 90? maybe kenny remembers. broke my heart selling it. but kenny did it justice thats for sure..

p.s Sholl is the correct spelling.

thanks for the pics

Bought it from you guys in October '88 and sold it in October '89.
I wish I had pics of it when it was white and Carla drove it. That car and driver were a staple of the Camelot cruise nights.
I have another early 'vert on the side of the house that may get the same color combo treatment.

Drgouk & Yvre, both of your convertibles are GREAT!

Here's a picture that I shot when Metz first built his 'vert at O.C.I.R. Note the spare wheel with original factory early style paint scheme.

A very recent shot of my best friend's 1962 'vert that he took almost ten years to completely restore... body-off-of-pan, too. Every piece of the car has been gone through. Amazing time machine to drive and see in person.

Those would be some obscure pictures, Gary... not too many people saw the car with those wheels. I'm sure Don has 'em, though.

Another reason I hate to see cars that I've owned years later...To see the car in that condition was very depressing.
And for some reason the only front turn signals they could find to hack into the front end came from the cheapest trailer manufacturer.

Thanks for the kind words.

Here we go, engine:
2276cc with CB 44x37 oval CNC heads, FK10, SCAT 1:4, SCAT 5,4" rods and A1 1 3/4 header... com ratio 10,6:1... and a Cold Fusion nitrous system (not tried yet)
Gearbox:
4.12 R&P... 3.78, 2.06, 1.56 and 1.21. Superdiff och SAW short axles.
Real Porsche 4.5 and deep 6" with MH Racemaster.

Fun car to drive BUT the drive train is going to be fitted in my 54 cal looker... feels safer after what happen to my club friend "Fast54" - Håkan Lundgren.

We Entered the 67 Convert with 21 BRMs in it at bug in 23 In Worst of Show it was also hittlers 91st Birthday that Day We Wrote on the Hood Happy 91st Birthday Adolf and also wrote Where else can you get a 67 Convert and 21 Brms All For $15,000.00 Today Only  The Funny Part is we did it as a Joke And Ron Barrett Owner of Barrett Ent. In Azusa Wanted To Buy It  we pulled him to the side and told him it was a Joke and the wheels were not for sale if you notice the DSK sticker is upside down on the Wing window  we had chains going threw the wheels so they did not disapear but we did have one guy steal some wheel spacers for the lugs Lucky for him we did not catch him.

Jim, I dig that shot of Gary's 'vert. Back then, I thought that was the best lookin' early 'vert on the road. Especially when it had the alloys or the BRMs. But mainly 'cause it was the only Cal Look car that I saw with the body trim still intact. Everyone, me included, dechromed our cars.

WOW... looking at that pic brings back other memories. Check out the old Shell and Sambo's signs in the background. Wish the gas price board was visible. I'm guessing it was around 65-85¢ gal. Of course, minimum wage was $2.50 hr. too.

Not sure, but I doubt that anyone would have powdercoated the pan and then restriped it exactly as it was done before.

I sold it on but kept the wheels..the new owner fitted some shiny fuchs and "interfered" with the rear ride height  :D
It hung onto it's heart and soul though  ;)

There was a 'peechy' colored pre '67 vert from france with detailed fuchs, that I realy liked...
Saw that one a few times in magazine during begining of 90. (cap feret meetings as I recall)
maybe somebody got some info on that one.

Anyone have new photos of Cal look Verts? I'd love to see some inspiration for my L41 '67 Vert project that I'm hoping to start soon.

No new photos from me, but if that black '67 was mine, I'd lose the gravel guards, polish up the paint, replace the top (might get away with doing just the top outer, like we did on my wife's Golf cab) with a black mohair one and change the bumpers for either polished t-bars or euro blades and over-riders. Leave the chrome too, it's just a nice bit of contrast against the black. Stance is obvious, wheel choice more personal. Fuchs are like bellybutton, but they look so good, Centerline and Ercos might be too race for the rest of the style. Your choice!

Neil, unfortunately the pain isn’t as nice as it looks and the rust is FAR worse than it looks. I’m going to be doing a full restoration on the car and I’m hoping it will be everything I’ve always dreamed of in a cal looker.

In that case then, dechrome the sucker and add Lucas L488s!
My wife's cab project kind of stalled when I changed jobs several years ago and lost all my spare time. I bought a couple of donor cars - a '68 sedan for the floor pan and front end, the back of a '74 sedan and the cabrio only sections of a '68 vert, all to go with the rotten but cheap 1970 Karmann that we started with. It's been spread over a number of garages for too many years...

Edit: have a trawl through my gallery on the samba, I've not worked out how to link to pics on my new phone...

Edit again: I'd even started a build thread on here...
