Title: The Stance Thread
Post by: OldSpeed on February 05, 2009, 19:43:01 pm
Not sure if we've had one of these before but I thought it'd be quite a good idea.

So post up a photo of your ride with details of the following:

1. Front suspension height and how its lowered which shock absorbers you've used etc.
2. Front tyre size.
3. Rear suspension height / any modifications.
4. Rear tyre size.

 :)

Easy thread that will give lot's of inspiration.  :D

So Here is my setup.

Front suspension is stock with CB spindle on a stock VW beam. Shocks are KYB.
Front tyres are 145/15 on 5.5*15.
Rear suspension is completely stock. (Hey, what do you expect here  ;D ). But it looks to be a little dropped by the age.
Rear tyres are 165/15 on 6*15

Front:
- stock width beam with Sway-a-Way adjusters, CB dropped spindles and stock length Cofap shocks.
- Michelin XZX 145 on 4.5 Fuchs
- I set up the front height in order to have the same fender/tyre gap as in the back
It rubs on full lock (sometimes), but then I'm one heavy m*****f****r...

Rear:
- Not lowered, KYB gey shocks
- Michelin XVS 185/15 on 5.5 Fuchs.

On my current '67, stock aged height on the rear (There's never been ANY other way!), Signet 165/15/?? (Sorry, it doesn't say the profile... but I like 'em). Up front... Nankang 135/15 and C.B. 2½" drop spindles. Stock length KYB silver shocks all around and early Flat Four BRM wheels.

Only future plans are wider tires up front, for sure. If funds allow, disc brakes like Rayburn's and Type 3 drums on the back. This outta shape up to be a pretty cool thread.

Title: Re: The Stance Thread
Post by: Rennsurfer on February 06, 2009, 01:52:35 am
My '66 had stock height on the rear (Of COURSE!) with either Pirelli, Aurora, or Michelin tires. All were 165/65/15. Up front... nothing but Michelins. At first, 135. Later, 145. Had too many shocks on the rear to remember. Fronts were some harsh riding short gas shocks from my friend's Ghia after he wrecked it. Switched to some better riding short shocks, later. Front end had Select-A-Drop adjusters welded in. Too many wheels to list, but never had rubbing issues.

Picture was taken by my best friend, Bob, from Dave McNew's old brown Squareback on the 405 frwy. on the way home from Bug-In 25. I remember that day very well. D.K.K. took two magazine covers, that year as a result. Probably the most talked about thing on that car was and still is the stance. I got very lucky and nailed it pretty good when I built that car. So good, that not only civilian people pulled me over regarding it... but just about every type of law enforcement agency, as well. (C.H.P. Police, Sheriff, Undercover, etc.) Towards the end of the six years I owned the car, I was quite used to getting pulled over a lot. Pretty cool, because back then... if you had a Cal Look VW in So Cal, you were always getting Fix-It tickets (equipment violation) for front end too low, headlight center beam too low, illegal exhaust, no front turn indicators, etc.) So to have law enforcement stop me to ask questions about my car THEN, let me go was VERY nice.

WOW, Jason... I really dig the way your car looks with the lighter colored wheels. VERY COOL! The only other thing I'd change, if it were mine, is paint the t-bars either silver or same color as the spokes.

I saw your car with those at Nick's, the other night. Thought it looked great.

It's not for the length they are still long enough for swing arms to reach the perch actually hence the limiting straps, It's for the damping rates they are stiff on rebound to help keep the rear planted on launch.

Lowered with puma beam up front, 135 tires on 5.5 torker wheels
The rear is lowered one spline because off all the weight I took out off it, tires are 205/70 on 5.5 torkers.

At the rear SLX 2000 Radial GT 235/60-15" on 1967 J. A. Pearce wheels called "Magnawheels" 6" wide. , 28mm sway-a-way, without preload. AVO shocks. Off course lowered to get the full thread in contact with the road. 1,6 sec 60 ft.

Front 145 Firestone on mas-produced German Mahles (5,5"), fitted with HotOwl adapters (17mm) to a stock beam with welded sway-a-way adjusters.
It looks a little close to the fender in front, but that is due to a little front shunt this car has had in the past.

To me this car sits right... and my looker will not be done before it sits this way to.

Makes sense...

In the past, I've used KYB Gas-a-just or Koni's on the rear with type 3 snubbers.

I still like the look of the 135's but dam, since I went to 155's from 145's on my recent car,the ride improvement is improved greatly.Stopping in the wet with smaller tire contact and the wheels turned..??? ...there is a difference.Disc front,155x15 stock spindles, boge shock, rear po;ished 356 b drums on 205/65x15.6 1/2 fake brms  Really enjoy the ride and comfort on braking. Getting old?? Still again love the look of 135 zx mich's on race car. BUT...,

What is the height/width difference between a 205/70 and a 205/65?

In answer to my own question, the have the same tread width but the 70s are just under an inch higher.

Can you fit a 215/65 on a 5.5 rim?

What a great thread! Some stunning cars on here!   Here is my contribution.

Front - OEM beam narrowed 2.75".  CB dropped spindles and a couple small leaves removed to counteract the stiff ride caused when narrowing the beam/torsion leaves.  4" American Racing Torque Thrusts with Mich 145 XZX tires.

Rear - Stock suspension with 7" Americans and 7W Firestone slicks recapped by Caldwell many moons ago.  Approx .250 spacer behind wheel

Goal was to have the same gap between tires and fender lip and have the tires as close to the lips as possible without rubbing.  None of that silly tucked look.  IMO, the 145 matches the shape of the front fender opening better than the 135 plus give just a tiny bit more rubber on the road.

Title: Re: The Stance Thread
Post by: Cornpanzer on February 08, 2009, 21:00:09 pm
Well, the car has been on either slicks or recapped slicks for more than 10 years and it now has a spool, so turning performance is going to be lousy no matter what.   :)  Plus, when I narrowed the beam, there were no narrow sway bars available.

But in a more mild mannered car with radials all the way around, I see no reason not to run a sway bar.

In my opinion there is not a looker out there with a better stance. Your car has it all, the tires kiss the fender lips and still your back wheels are wide enough to give a normal spacing in between the rear wheels. Giving what I like to call the "muscle car look". Usually when one uses the "normal" vw rims out there you either get a silly gap to the fender or you space it out and get the dreaded IRS look. One of the few cars, with narrow rims, that has ever pulled off the look you have going here is the Greg Aronsons white car with Bluestreaks on the rear... but that's a super wide tire on a narrow rim!

Giving what I like to call the "muscle car look".

You couldn't said it better!!

Cornpanzer, your car is a 67 isn't it? You say that you narrowed the beam 2,75".Did you make any modifications on the body? Because 2.75" is almost 7cm and I thought 6cm was the max a ball-joint beam can be narrowed without touching the body.......maybe I was wrong.
And another question, what's the ET of your wheels(front&back)?

Title: Re: The Stance Thread
Post by: nicolas on February 09, 2009, 20:38:09 pm
lets add a type3...

rears are stock with empi8's and 185/70 vredesteins on long axles and type3 drums (all stock)

front is lowered 2 or 3 splines on the exteriour. empi8's with 165/65 bridgestones for wider track. the tyres rub the fenders at full lock, so i want to see it just a bit higher. i have acccuired a set off drop spindles for type3 and i am going to fit them. it should actually raise the front a couple cm. to eliminate the rubbing and have a bit more clearance with bumps. type3's are horrible if they are too low. they will hook up on a eurocent.

Yes, it is a 67.  The beam fits very snug up against the inner fenders.  I suspect that every car may be different...besides, this was done more than 12 years ago, so I may have my dimensions off a cm.   ;)

I dont recall the ET, but backspacing is approx 4 3/4" measured from the mounting flange to the back edge of the wheel.  Real backspacing is probably closer to 4.5".

Hope this helps.

My 67 feature car (Cover or Feb. 96 Hot VWs Cal Look issue) had a great stance to it. I was looking to get the old drag sedan stance from the late 60's/early 70's. It was one of my favorite builds of all the cars I've done.

I built it during a time when we were all trying to help create a resurgence in street driven sedans that with big motors could still be driven long distances. I had a much detuned 2110cc motor in it.  One of my greatest accomplishments with the car was a trouble free 5200 mile round trip from Phoenix to Auburn Hills, Michigan, and back, in May of 1997.  Don Builitta, Art Threan (ACE VW Carb Guru) and I, along with many others, did the BERG CRUISE that year to VW head quarters.

One more shot at 5:00am, in front of fellow cruiser Don Bulitta's house, the day we left for SLC to meet up with Art Threan (May 1997) before heading to Auburn Hills, Michigan. It had the look and stand going on.

No Adele just borrowed it for EBI2, Stoo built this about 5 years ago and is one of my all time favourite cars! What is cool though is Stoo's 59 was built pretty much at the same time as ours was and shared alot of the same 'keep on the road' modifications that were carried out over the years! I have a photo somewhere of ours on the day we bought it next to Stoo's!

Yeah, me neither :( Back when the British pound was 2:1, Longstone Tyre had them for 199.50 each, free shipping. Coker had them for $384 each, plus shipping. I just checked Longstone again today (blew a 205/70 this morning!!), hoping the exchange rate would work to my advantage... they upped the price to 255 pounds, that is $365 each. Guess I'm going to buy some new, cheap 195/65's until my money tree blossoms.

This has to be one of my all time favourites   ;D

Old and original with bias ply A78-15's on the front, 6.00-15's on the back, 5.5" Sprint Stars.

145 XZX's on 4.5" Sprints up front, 165 XZX's on 5.5 Sprints bringing up the rear.

CB Drop spindles and disc brakes.

NOS Koni shocks, CB rear disc brakes, narrowed rear trailing arms (26mm).

195/65's on the back.

As it sits now with 205/70's on the rear (not a fan!)

Plan is to get the 6" Sprints made up, wrap 185/70 XWX's around them, and lower the rear just a tad until the fender gap matches the front.

I changed my stance..
I removed the 195/65's, and tossed on some 205/70's.  I think it looks much better.

hey no problem...i belive u! but  them look shorter...
i say this cause i got 195/65 on rear and looks different from yours
this is my car with:
155/70 on front (with puma beam)
195/65 on stock  rear suspension and torsion bars

Title: Re: The Stance Thread
Post by: Nico86 on April 09, 2009, 13:04:28 pm
A question that is maybe stupid  :D : what's the difference beetween for example a 165/80/15 tyre and a 165/15 (or 165R15) tyre ? Is it the same or not mentioning the profile makes a difference with the wheel diameter ?

Title: Re: The Stance Thread
Post by: Jesse/DVK on April 09, 2009, 13:13:58 pm
When the height isn't mentioned on a tire it's 80. So 165r15 and 165/80r15 are the same

Title: Re: The Stance Thread

Title: Re: The Stance Thread
Post by: Bryan67 on April 09, 2009, 15:29:44 pm
Thats not totally true. A 165/80 is taller than a 165r15.

Title: Re: The Stance Thread
Post by: JS on April 09, 2009, 15:38:53 pm
165r15 = 165/82-15. Though most people (and tire shops!) treat 80 as full profile.

Title: Re: The Stance Thread
Post by: Zach Gomulka on April 09, 2009, 17:17:16 pm
Too add to the confusion... (some?) older tires that did not state the aspect ratio were 78 series. I still haven't got to the bottom of this but I know my 165 XZX's were shorter than the standard 165/15's they sell nowadays.

Title: Re: The Stance Thread
Post by: Nico86 on April 09, 2009, 19:45:31 pm

The blue '61 and white '67 have great stance. Endre, you're running 155 SR15 tires up front? That's pretty cool... I always assumed that the standard 155 profile wouldn't be low enough to allow the front end of a car to be brought down to a desirable height. If those are 155 SR15 tires in the pics, it looks rather nice. Good job.

-Stock beam narrowed 4" with body notched-out for shock towers / leaf adjusters (adjusted near mid-way)

Rear:
-Lowered one inner and one outer spline (I think, can't recall exactly)
-27mm torsion bars

My 1968 Beetle with stock front beam/shocks/drums, etc, with CB dropped spindles, 145R15, 4.5" '68 EMPI Sprintstars.
Stock rear suspension/shocks/drums/Z-bar, etc, with 5.5" '69 EMPI's and either 195/65's (first photo) or M&H 215/65's (second photo).  After over 200 launches at the track, the front sits a bit higher than it used to...or perhaps the rear sits lower ;)

Well, I like my lookers lowered in the rear...

Like your 1303?

I know that heaving a swing axle car you can't go to low because the wheels will gain to much negative camber during launch but... on the other hand, Bugs with positive camber handle so awfully. I know that some will say that cal-looker does not need to handle, but I love to drive my cars and it sucks when you have to almost stop before corners. It makes you slow everywhere except for the strip and cal-look cars are supposed to be street cars, aren't they? ;)

So you need to find a balance (or convert to IRS :D ) and some of the Bugs above represent what I call an "exaggerated stance". Cool for looks (for some people), but almost certainly uncool to drive. To each his own.

Well, I know it is far from a Cal Looker (still  ;)) but I can' resist posting the new, shod with tires, wheels I bought yesterday on our (for sale) notchback. We bought it with the visor on and never got round to take it off, but we never have driven it like this either and never were going to. The car has been sitting in the garage for 6 years now. It sat on totally disintegrated 135 in the front and 165 (maybe 185) in the back on 4-lug sprintstars, that just tucked in enough not to touch the fenders

The car is too low, but still I like the way it sits with the 205/70 in the back fitting like a glove, if only just. Wonderful how the tiny offset of the 2 litre Fuchs allows the big wheels to fit a long-axled Notch.

In the front are lousy, ugly, no good smart tires, 145 wide, probably 65 high. These are still lower than normal 135 tires and if I would keep the car these would be the first to go (but only after re-anodising the wheels and detailing them with gloss black).

Not really much stance but some anyways...

Stock beam,
Dropspindles with stock tires and wheels, 165/80 both front and rear. Rear end stock height.

Will get 205/65 or 70 in the rear very soon with widened og. 66 wheels.

Jellö is right, I shouldn't have made the post with the sunvisor. Im so sorry. Just to make it up I had to clean the car today with soapy water and take new pictures without the add-ons.

Oh, and Diederick is right as well, it does have potential  ;D  Even so much so I really don't want to sell it.

Cheers,

Good eye..Finding a correct switch that had the dimmer working properly was futile, I chose to run a new 68+ unit. The clear front marker lenses were NOS from Italy. Another trick..all of the bulb/reflector assemblies were bright cad plated and polished, that's why all of the lights appear brighter. Oops..this is the 'stance' thread.:)

Worry not about the slight topic change, Lanny. And thank you for walking us through the awesome front marker mods. VERY cool! Great score on the clear n.o.s. Italian model lenses, too. I've always thought that certain countries got clear ones during those model years, but have never fully confirmed it.

Back to the stance subject matter, such as it were.

I did the beam from an OG One. Yes, CB spindles pulls the wheels out. That's the only reason why I used a narrowed beam on my car. To bring the wheels back in.

VERY nice looking wheels! Refreshing to see non-chromed and widened steel ones for a change. Also... very cool 1200 badge on the decklid. Don't think I've ever seen one in the States. Were those a factory option, or strictly aftermarket?

Thanks guy's, much appreciated. A new motor is being built as we speak. My original 2303cc, with a E125 cam on a 106LC, and a set of JD heads, 42X37, and of course, IDA's. Should be fun on the street. My 2303cc in the car now will be getting refreshed with a new set of heads from Fred Simpson (Performance Tech.), will go back in next year.

Part of the build of my car I had help from my buddy Randy (Kaferdog). Giving credit where credit is due.

Thanks Fab, I think so too, kinda nice to switch off once in awhile. Was thinking of selling them, have them posted on the Samba, was going to get the Flat4 Alloys like what Dustin has on his 69', I like the look, but will be putting a stock width beam back in. BUT...if they don't sell, I will keep them and on the car with the beam that's in now.

But why are you sad about it? Your car looks great. You managed to achieve a muscular look without being forced to use over-sized truck tires which would rather not work as well as the ones you have now. I would say it's a good thing.

Dale's car looks really cool with its new stance, nice work buddy. Look forward to seeing it with its next dose of hardcore POWER :)

I dropped the front end of my bug a little more, but still not too low, I like being able to see the tyre in the front wing.

Rears may benefit from a taller tyre? Its currently a 225/60 hoosier street ET.

It's your car, nobody prevents you to lower your car here. I like "slammed cars" like you said few times ago, that's why I say now I think your car can be cool with bumpers, just a question of taste.  ;)

I like the stance on Fred's baby blue car above in his signature.
The Orange car stance looks like someone lowered the front an inch too much and then did not lower the rear enuf or at all.
I will admit the orange car stance was just how my first VW looked the day after I had my select a drop intalled and cranked as low as I could get it.  :D It looked right in the eyes of 16 year old.
Fred's two cars in his signature have different rakes one is bound to be correct, right?  ;)

CB dropspindles Front, it also has ajustable fornt beam but it's raised max.

Also the Albert mirrors are gone, thats probably the best thing i have done so far with the car, completely changed the look.  8)

Meh... to each their own. I really like the way my orange car sat and besides most people, even cops would pull me over, asking how I got the entire car to sit just right. But I was a teen when I built that car and still in high school. These days, I'm an old man and prefer the stock shock travel and great ride of drop spindles. WAY better in my opinion.

Carry forth.

One the reasons why I chose not to run the drop spindles is that it will allow me to run a full width beam.   ;)

It's always easier to start closer to stock and add modifications then it is to go the other way. If I don't like the way it rides, I can always take it further.

^^^^I agree, a 1" raise seems perfect and better for the suspension too (I think) maybe this question should be on a different thread but......when doing a 1" trans raise what else needs to be modified? I think the sheetmetal shelves in the engine compartment would have to be moved to seal the engine compartment right? I'm thinking of doing a 1" raise but my car still gets driven on the street and needs the engine tin and engine compartment seal so I was wondering what's involved with doing this to keep the car streetable with cooling etc.

Thanks!

You need a bus nosecone for the shift linkage to line up but that's the easy part. It's a lot of metal work to do it cleanly. You can get caveman and beat the package tray to clear, or section the firewall 1" and raise the tray up for a factory fit and appearance. I would leave the engine bay shelves in place and use a late model engine seal flipped upside down. If you raise the trays then the seal channel won't line up between the shelves and rear apron. Also the decklid spring will interfere with the fanshroud, and the exhaust will need work (I would weld up the pea shooter holes and use a center outlet for the collector to pass through).

So many nice raker`s on here!
Old car of club Mate Andi aka Rookie. The perfect stance in my point of view. That car really got me into THE LOOK and was the first 1776ccm where I had the co driver opportunity. Good times.

Lovin' this stance.

Can you help me? What type of front wings are they, have they been changed? Looks cool.

Looks like just European ones to me, same as US '66 and earlier. Now as your car is a genuine US-spec 67, you'll want to keep the ones you've got!

Wasn't thinking of changing, I was curious as I thought European 67 had the flat headlights, didn't realise it was a US only thing. So the general change over worldwide must have been 68, right?

 thanks

The new car. Just need to find the center caps for the sprint stars that have been in storage for 12-13 years.
