Title: Cal-look & VW litterature
Post by: Nico86 on March 05, 2009, 00:18:02 am
Post here what  books or documents you think are indispensable for a hot vw owner.

I start with the classical stuff :

The 2 books

there's several issues of Hot VW's that are cool to hunt for, and what I would consider "must haves"

You've already shown the ubiquitous Feb 75 issue...  8)

1970 HOT ROD forget month... have it at home, has a short bit about DKP club, in the article "Drive ya Buggy" by John Thawley. Rates 11 on the cool scale of 1-10

The issue featuring DKPII from 1977(?)

The Cal Look issue from 1981 (?), has a fantastic article on original DKP club, great pics of the cars lined up with decklids up, long-haired Aronson and Fleming putting a diff together, and other stuff. there was an article about drilling 356 drums to 911 5 x 130 in the same issue. Must have.

1980 issue with Gary Berg's pearly green/blue '67 12.40 sec street car.

Dec 1989 with Gary Berg's now metallic blue '67 with low CR and still 13 sec. What a car. Too bad it ended up in such the wrong hands.

Cal Look issue with Schwimmer's, Mason's, Jim Lowe's, Rhoads and Hector's car on cover. Cal Look Rebirth for the masses. Nice little blurb about early cal Look, and the cult wheel, the BRM.

Cal Look issue with Mike Smith's red '67 street car with nitrous 1776  8)

September 1997 issue of Hot VWs... Jim Kaforski's blue '63 204hp, Lanny Hussey's white '67 and a very cool little article on the Club Look by Richard Kimball

any of the publications that talk more about the history of how it progressed to what it is today...  those are the good ones to find.

 8)

Something I've been thinking about that's funny is I remember an event coverage article in Hot VWs... can't remember when, but I'm thinking it was late '80s... Jim Lowe's car, now owned by Stephan, was in the article with a pic, but the captions said something to the effect of "while not a Cal-Looker in the traditional sense..." the car is very clean.  The last part is me paraphrasing what was written... I got a kick out of that, given what was considered Cal-Look during the '80s, at least by the masses what wiht all the neon day glo colors, graphics and other jibber jabber. ;-D

Try contacting Autobooks in Burbank, California. They were carrying it, last time I was in there. Which was a few months back. That or ask Stephan S.

Back when I built my first Cal Look VW, I ended up getting on a few mailing lists. Just found all of my old Bug-In and Bug-o-Rama promotional posters and fliers. The posters are huge and won't fit on my scanner. I gotta get those framed. But here are a couple of small (8.5"x11") fliers. Some of which I have duplicates of. If anyone's interested in buying any, please feel free to private message me. If not, enjoy.

I saw here 2 books for the first time: Mike Key-Custom Beetle (Osprey Style Cars) and David Fetherston-Volkswagen Customs and Classics. Are this books more like Demon Bugs, I mean lot of photos with short description or they are more like manuals. Do they cover many cal lookers?! What do you think about those books?

Mike Key's book has lot of photos and short descriptions. It has at least Greg Brinton's, Bill Schwimmer's, Dave Mason's, Gary Berg's and Brody Hoyt's cars featured in it as far as I remember.
