Title: DKK - Looking for my old family.... are you still out there?
Post by: DKK - Lisa on April 17, 2009, 17:34:46 pm
I just found this site while walking down memory lane last night.  I've seen some old posts from some very dear old friends.  Are you still out there?  I sure would love to reconnect with you all !!

Now there is an old name I absolutely adore!  No, I lost touch with Steve a very long time ago.  I've really lost contact with all of DKK.  Even Nancy and Henry.  I think my lil' sis still talks with Todd Fuller now and then.  I am connected with Carry Liera on Face Book.  Otherwise, I'm completely disconnected......

Wow, you guys are good.  What fun photos and links.  I think I saw a foreign magazine article featuring Steve Wilkerson's Blue Bug as well as mine.  I never even knew about that one.  I can't wait to go back through and read things more thoroughly.  I'm beginning to get addicted to this nostalgia stuff : )  I've heard from Jeff Hicken via private e-mail and Fred too.  Gosh I sure miss you guys!!  So who else is out here???

As far as my 53 Split.... I have no idea where it is or what happened to it.  I sold it for around $6000.  It needed some significant front end attention.  I remember the guy who bought it barely fit inside the car.  He was a tall, big guy!  He loved the car.  I remember him driving off with the biggest smile..... and the front end rubbing as it rolled down the street.  (I really think he was too big for the car!).  I moved on and started another project - a 67 Convert with plans for showing it.  That project was scrapped when I fell in love with a cute little Red Porsche - 911 Targa.  That was the end of my VW days : (

So where is Bug-In in 2 weeks?

Hey Jim, Ya I was there around the late 70's not sure exactly when, was there when Bill and Ray were still together, there was a Mike that did the heads, JerryWalton who I woked close with. A long blonde hair guy that was one of the engine builder's, later Cory Mac came in I think as an engine builder cause of his father I think. I left when Ray and I did not get along. Then went to Bergs for a short time then. I also remember a guy named Harley that ported heads there on his own, not at the shop. Starting to jog my memory.   ::) Oh ya! There was a guy named Scott that was an engine builder that use to race, I remember working late, he would go home and come back with his prime blue bug that you could her him coming, he had one of the first turbo muffler's he made, which I bought from him later.

Bill and Ray were still together when I was there also.  I remember Jerry, very cool guy.  I always remember him telling me how easy fingers come off.  the engine builder when I was there had a bad ass boat with a 440 magnum in it.  took me for a ride in it at the river.  Wonder if the guy with the primer blue car was scott bruce. jim bell got me the job there.

Ya Jerry was a cool guy, we would go home the same direction and race over the hill to the 60FWY. He had that green 66' I believe. Was sad when I heard he had passed away in a wreak up north. The engine builder I know of had a 914, I think yellow, maybe  the same guy your talking about. The guy with the blue bug is Scott Bruce, he lived off Lambert. Jim your talking about sounds fimiliar, he was one of the main machinist, right? Man I miss the old days.

WORM!!!!!! : )
OMG we are neighbors.  I'm in Laguna Niguel.  Got to get together!  E-mail me and I'll swap numbers with you.  How are you?  I'm having such a blast reading about everyone.  I talked to Jeff and Mark yesterday.  I have such a happy heart right now.  I can't believe how much I miss you guys and how you can still make me laugh.  So is there going to be a reunion or what?  Count me in!

And Jim.... I was in the club while you were in.  I recall your car & you!  I didn't always have the split while in DKK.  My first bug - a beige sixty-eight with blacked out chrome, sun roof.  Pretty stock othewise.  I can't remember if I eventually did something with the motor.  My brain is still foggy from those yearsl  I'm going to dig up my old pics and learn to work our scanner.  With any luck and a quick learning curve, I'll renew my details and get some pics posted soon.

YOU KNOW WHAT.... I think I may have even seen you down at Steve's work at the machine shop.  He had the most wonderful boss.  An older guy who was just kinder than you can imagine.  He gave me a long talk one day about going to college.  I remember him very clearly telling me that once I completed my education, even if everything else fell apart, even if all of my material things were taken from me, I would always have my degree.  He told me that was an achievement that no one could ever take from me and that it would be useful for the rest of my life.  Wise old man!!  I went on and got two of them.... probably with a little help from the direction he offered me : )

So who else is out there?

Lisa

Lisa,

Welcome Back!  I am sure you don't remember me, but I remember you!

I was in DVB.  I was the President for awhile there at the end of the car club days.   Barb, Joanie & myself use to hang out with your club a lot, especially Fred (Mark) at the car show and cruises.  I believe Barb went out with a member of your club at one time.

It was really great to see the members of DKK reunite, and everyone kept asking about you, and wondering where you went.  So I am happy that you have found the club members again.
All the guys are still really wonderful, and a real pleasure to be around. Fred and Worm -  I think are more fun than in the good ole days!

I am still into the volkswagen thing with my husband, and I have organized the PowderPuff Racing Class at all the races this year.  It has been a lot of fun!

Well Lisa - hope to see you at some event in the near future!

Take Care,
Susy Gifford Herbert

It's a cool place to visit...

I remember your car... never met a Ragtop Split I didn't like ;D

So, do you have the "Cal-Look fever" yet?

One other thing... we have Mark "Fred", Scott "Worm", now Lisa "_____"?

Enjoy!

Hey there Susy.  You bet I remember you!  I asked about you when I was on the phone yesterday talking to either Mark or Jeff Hicken.  They mentioned your powder puff racing.  Good for you!  One of the guys in your club helped me tow the split to a RG Canning show and for the life of me I can't remember his name.  He was so kind, alot like a father figure.  Do you know who I am talking about?

Anyways, I sure look forward to running into you and the girls again.  I think I have some old photos of our clubs building human pyramids at some park event.  You girls were all up at the top.  I'll work on scanning it and getting it posted.

And as far as a nick name for me.... I don't think I ever had one, at least not one that I knew about......   I was just the token female club member.  I guess DKK was ahead of their time - non discriminatory, equal opportunity........ :D  They just took me in like a little sister.

Lisa

Lisa - it was probably John Fawley that might have helped you.  I saw him a few years back at one of the Drag Days, and he was really grumpy!  Maybe he was just having a bad day! :(

Barb lives in Encinitas, and does not communicate with anyone but Joni - I believe.  I saw her a few years ago at my wedding!  Joni still hangs out every once in a while, and she is still the same Joni - I just love her!

Those photos are probably from Crazy Caravan at Irvine Park!  Those were the days - huh?  Did not have the responsibility that we have today!

You were well taken care of by the boys from DKK - they all loved you!  I know Barb - Joni & I loved hanging out with your club - even though we were faithful to DVB.  DKK had all the "cute boys" in their club - you lucky girl!

Looking forward to see you sometime.  If you come to Fontana - please come and look for me in the staging lanes - that's where I will be most of the day!

Susy

OK Susy... I'm learning how to work the scanner.  This one is for you : )
This was at some casual event when our clubs got together.  Do you remember this?

DKK Pyramid:
top row -  Lisa,
Second row -  ???, ???,
Third row - ??? Tod,  ???
Bottom row - Rick, Kevin Brennan,  Scott Hall, Mark Rameriz

Alex is standing in front of the DVB Pyramid and yes, that's Steve's behind in those cute little shorts.

Here's a pick of the same Ghia (Wilkerson's???) when it got hit on the OTHER side!  That thing got pounded a few times.  This was BEFORE/beacuse he put the glass one piece front end on and then in your pic is when it got slammed AGAIN.  Too much.

I can't get over ALL THAT HAIR   !!!!  Where did mine go??????  Ha!

Great pics.  Please post more.  And it was great talking to you the other day.  Looking forward to seeing you in a few weeks.

Just wondering if that car ended up as Mike Mabe's "Street Cleaner" red ghia???

...and please Lisa, post more pics.   Very entertaining!

Weren't you guys/gals mostly from Bellflower area? I use to have a friend that I believe was in your club which I haven't seen in more than 20 years. His last name was Taylor..all I can remember. Maybe?

Where was that GEMCO located in your meets? Wasn't it near the pizza place hangout?

I had a '52 split cal-look with Lonnie Reed heads high comp. motor with Berg 5 speed in '79,'80. We used to terriorize the streets of Cypress (home town). V8 owners were not highly looked upon..Ha!

Young and dumb back then, but a whole lot of fun! 8)

You and Kathy Hung out back then.  I almost did not recognize Nancy's pic.  I totally remember the blue bug I think I have a pic of it as well.  I still have the little metal stickers from those scavenger hunts you used to put together.  What great times!!!  Hey Lisa remember the Mazdaratti the red Mazdaratti.... I feel like a moron for replying to myself (that inside joke is for YOU, Rayburn)... but does Susy or Lisa remember what year that volleyball event was? I'm looking at those pictures and I'm gonna guess around 1980, '81, or maybe '82.

Here ya go, Lisa...

One of our many ventures at some park. Probably El Dorado or one of the big Orange County ones. Looks like your yellow Split, Alex's fiberglass Heb, Bob Davis' Notch, Steve's Ghia, and a few that I can't recall.

And here's our own Lisa at o'dark thirty in the morning, before dawn, in line at Bug-In at O.C.I.R. Further proof that you have some great pictures hiding at home. You had a way better camera than I did. So keep the scanning going. HAHA!! I'm guessing that you're standing next to Vince Ito's yellow car.

Yet another get together at a park. I have no clue where, but I do know that I had this pic developed in December of 1981.

Here are a few of my 53 Split at a RG Canning show in Long Beach.  We did a group display with Steve's Blue Bug and Scott Hall's Blue Bug.  I don't have any pics of theirs (that I can find right now).  I talked to my Dad a few days ago and he PROUDLY told me that he had saved the Plexi Glass Display Board that you see in the photo.  I told him to throw it away at leaste a dozen times over the years.  I'm kinda glad he kept it.  Don't know what I'm going to do with it  ???  Nostalgia..... Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh   I wonder what else he saved.

Yes it definitely is... and you can just make out the Duchers buggy body prop bar in the background...

Here's the picture to save you searching it out:

That one is Steve Wilkerson's.  The one in front of mine is Scott Halls.

Here is a photo of Steve Wilkerson.  All of the other photos seemed to be of his back side.  This is at that same volley ball event.  There is a small flaw due to the scanner.  I guesss the learning curve continues.

Hey Mark and Worm.  Are your memories are bad as mine?  I thought you would be helping me with filling in the names of these other members by now.  Any help?

Hey Fred I have a question for you!
I was going through some more of my things and I came across three key ring monoscopes with photos from my DKK days.  Do you remember some guy would come by and take photos and then try to sell them to you later at the event.  It's a rectangular little box that you peek your eye through and against some decent light (and some better vision than I have today), you can see the photo.  Remember those???  Do you know if there is any way to pull the photo out and print them?  They're pretty small.  What ideas do you have?
Lisa

What ideas do you have?

I have many ideas... but I DO still have three of those tiny mini viewers that you're referring to. I'll dig 'em out and take a pic. You ROCK, girl... I thought that I was the only one that kept that old stuff.

(edit) Oh my God... just found all of 'em. Thought that I was missin' one. COOL! Anyway, here they are. Also, I'm gonna go pick up my childhood friend/photography mentor/skateboarding partner to go skate at The Block in Orange. And he's tellin' me that we can scan these positive color half frame images and convert them to .jpg files so we can enjoy 'em on the computer. STOKED!!! If it does work out, I'll post the pictures up that are inside of these viewers. One is at Small Car Specialties' car show, one of me, standing next to my car during another car club's rally... freezin' my arse off. And one more of me pullin' into a breakfast-car show event at some park. All were in the early '80s.

Ironically, the Picture This company was based in my neighborhood... Lakewood and Long Beach. Which was funny, because they'd show up to just about every So Cal VW event, back then. Great memories. So glad that I kept all of this stuff. Thanks for reminding me, Lisa. See ya this weekend!

OK Mark.  I can't wait to see if it works.  I also have three of them.  They are pretty worn.  Two of them are missing the lense.  I think one is from the RG Canning show and the other two are from a Small Car Specialties Show.  Possibly the same one yours is from.  Keep me posted : )

WORM!!!!!! : )

Lisa

Lisa,
forgot that old guys name, but he flew B-17's in WW2, had a bunch of photo's of his plane throughout his shop.  He also was a very good guy, he offered me alot of advice also.  get the degree, which I did, and get of the machiine shop biz, which I when I got the degree.
i was in that area for about a year, between auto craft and his machine shop.  great place to work, there was always something going on, either some hot street cars or you would see some of the midget cars come in before the races.

Still trying to figure that out.  I've got some ideas and my eyes are open.  May need some time to relearn all of this stuff.  There are just way to many details that I have forgotten.  I've been on the phone with Fred, Brent, Worm & Tod so far - picking their brains.  The twins really want a rag top.  They fell in love with Tod's at Bug-In.  I'll keep you posted.

I was never a DKK President  .... I spent more than $800.00 when I purchased the car...  not important trivia, but still entertaining!!  Thanks for scanning the other magazines too.  I've got to share pics of the magazine because there are some Dear Old DKK Friends in the French Magazine too!!  Steve's Bug, Dan's Bug, Tod's Ghia, Fred's Bug.  Can't remember which event this was from but perhaps the other DEEKS will have a better memory than mine.

Nico, You are the greatest.  Thank You So Very, Very Much!!  Can't wait to pay back the favor ;)

Lisa, thanks for thinkin' of me... but that reddish/orange car isn't mine. Looks like Bill Schwimmer's late model car that we voted him in the club with. I never had a passenger side mirror nor did I ever have body molding on my orange car. Cool stuff, nonetheless, though! VERY COOL!

Wait... rules? We don't need no steenking RULES, mang. The only rule to remember regarding the Cal Look lifestyle; HAVE FUN. Plain and simple.

Carry on.

Talk about an "historical" article... This is where it all started for a bunch of car enthusiasts (including myself) in France, back in '82. The California Look was unknown until then.

Cool display, I like the can of "air" ;D

~DR.

At the RG Canning shows, you got points for your display along with your car. They specified points for have certain tools and items in your display. You would get points for have Gas, Oil and Coolant cans... therefore the VWs would have "Air" cans to get those points.

Hey Nico,
Glad you got the package you wanted.  So here's the story for the rest of you.....  Sorry for the length, but there are some pretty special details I wanted to include.

Nico tells me that he will keep this Berg Shifter 4-EVER  ;)

As posted above, my new French BFF Nico was kind enough to GIVE me his copy of the French Magazine that my Split Window was in many years ago.  How very kind that was of him!!  So I told him, if there is ever anything I can do for you, let me know....

Nico tells me that he's looking for a BERG Shifter.  So hey, BERG is in the OC, just like me.  I can make that happen for my new friend.  So my daughter Karina and I drive down to BERG and upon walking into the office I hear a sweet wonderful voice greeting us, yes it was Dee Berg.  Now you must remember that I have been away from this scene for nearly 25 years.  Walking into their store front was like entering a museum.  There were curio cabinets filled with VW trinkets.  Dee obviously has an extreme passion for collecting VW items.  I learned that what I was seeing was only the tip of the iceberg.  She is one of those EXTREME Collectors!!  There are also autographed photos hung on the walls throughout the store front which begged for my attention...yes, I looked at them all!!

So I begin sharing with Dee the story about my new friend Nico from France and what I needed to purchase.  Dee loves the story and she helps me find some additional goodies to fill the box up (some Berg Stickers, a t-shirt - Dee and I had to take a guess on the size).  So once I have all the goods taken care of, like Ladies do.... we begin to chat.

We are taking a walk down memory lane and I am hearing this wonderful sweet woman share her passion and history with me.  She talks of business, of VW friends and our common VW family.  I learn that she is currently racing with Powder Puff and we discover that we both know and adore a mutual friend...Susy.  Susy is the greatest and she coordinates Powder Puff Racing in addition to racing her own white Ghia.  Susy at one time worked at BERG with Dee.  What a small world.

And while we are talking, I look down below the glass top of the display case we are standing in front of.  I see a small yellow model of a split window VW made out of an eggshell, of all things.  It was so unique and it immediately reminded me of my 53 split window.  So I begin to share with Dee about my car and how special it was to me way back in the day.  She listens as I share how I very recently found my way back to this scene.  Some of you can guess what is about to happen .....  Dee shares with me that the car she races with Powder Puff is a split window too!

NO WAY!!!  I beg for a photograph and she ups the anti by inviting my daughter and I into the back of the Berg Shop to SEE her car.  OMG, I got to spend time with Dee Berg and play with her car!!  Everything works on the split!!  We played with the semiphores, I had to take out my camera and shoot some pics.  I got to feel the fabrics of the interior.  This car is something else!!  So I am just in heaven with a surge of split window memories coming at me.  And even when you think it can't get any better than this.... it gets even better.  Dee tells me about the special history of her car.   You see, Rich Kimball used to own that split window, once upon a time.  As Dee tells me, he sold that car to pay for hospital bills after his child was born.  I believe there was a middle man between the purchase from Kimball to Berg, but she tells me that the Registration had his name on it.  Put a value on that one!!!  PRICELESS

Continued Below

Title: Re: DKK - Looking for my old family.... are you still out there?
Post by: DKK - Lisa on June 15, 2009, 04:17:28 am
Continued from above....

So Dee and I finally say our good-byes and we make promises to get together for lunch.  We both agree that Susy must attend.  I almost walked out without Nico's shifter (I told you I was excited).  But I did manage to find the sense to ask Dee to pose for one last photograph....  Dee Berg holding Nico's new shifter.

So there you have it.  Nico, you now have a California story attached to your Berg Shifter.  I love the fact that this BERG Shifter was only handled by us California Ladies.  The Cali Girls with Split Windows!!!  Dee and I wish you many fun miles ahead...  Be safe Nico and Enjoy!!

Lisa

Great story, and of course I will keep this shifter, if I have another project it will have its place in it, and if I unfortunately have to sell my car I will keep it in my collection.

I was so excited to receive the package ! And I was a little worried with the money I sent you, because the girl at the bank office has never done any bank transfer to the US before so she didn't know how it works ! I'm probably the first to have done that in my town  :D.

I still can belive it, I have it comin' from You and Dee, I'm glad you've make it happen to me thank you again and again and again !

 ;)

P.S. Here is a baaaad picture of the shifter that's on my bedside table since I receive it, with this I dream about VWs all night ! ;D ;)

UPDATE:
[attachment=1]

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=869914

Looking through the Samba last night I ran across the above posting.  I asked myself...
OMG, is that my old split window on the cover of Hot VW's?

I actually purchased the magazine last night after emailing back and forth with a different seller.  He informed me that he personally saw the car at the port in Long Beach, ready to ship to Japan around 1992.  He tells me that a VW shop in Japan had purchased it.  He also told me that it ended up in some museum over there.  Hmmmm.. that's the same story I heard from our very own Jeff Hicken recently.  The seller of the magazine also told me that he saw it up for sale in a Japanese magazine by the name of CAL around 93/94.  He's going to look for the magazine for me  ;D

I began a new search last night on the web. I wish I knew how to read Japanese!  I was able to find a vw club in Japan and emailed a female member (it's a girl thing) who told me that she remembers the car and seeing it at shows in the 90's.  Dialog still in progress.  Time change is a frustrating variable.

So as you know, I've found my DEEK family.  I wonder if I can find the car?   ::)
