Title: VW's LIMITED, DKP I AND AUTO HAUS PHOTOS
Post by: johnl on May 26, 2009, 01:26:25 am
Over the weekend I was able to find more photos of VW's Limited (pre DKP I) more DKP I and Auto Haus Shots.  Some of these are personal, but they are part of my story.  If they bore you simply pass them by, but I hope that have some enjoyement for you.

First, this is a photo of myself heading the first Anaheim to Hollywood caravan.  My car was still in the Ruby red form and I think it had the Judson Supercharge on it then.  Note how his the front is due to the welded shocks that I've written about.  I believe the car to my left is Rich Kugel's '58 and I do remember we were all Duded up as it was a big deal for us.  This was taken in the Penny's parking lot on Lemon Street in Fullerton or Anaheim (not sure of the boundries there), but it was directly across the street from the then Anaheim Drive-In..........

Next is what I think is the first photo ever taken of Christie and myself at Disneyland (her favorite place).  This was taken on May 21, 1967 which would be exactly 10 months to the day after we met.  She was 5 days shy of 17 and I had just turned 20.  She will be 59 tomorrow and is still the love of my life. :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

These are not in any order and I'll try to break them up to make it more interesting.  Here is a shot of Ed Craig and the guy he has always looked up to, Stan Davis.  This was taken at a Bug-In back in the '70's.  Notice how close these two are.  The only problem with that is you never knew were Stans hands were or worse yet where they had been....... :o :o :o :o

A shot of my '63 sporting those wide Firestone's with fender lips.  As you can see the car is still in Firemist Green and the '32 Plymouth in the background belonged to Mike Mendenhall (VW's Limited).  I think this photo was about 1968 and shot in my parents driveway which was where some of the first club meetings took place.   Mike drove Christie and myself to here Senior Prom in the car.  Coooooooool ride.

Speaking of my parents, you will find a photo of them in our back yard taken in the late '60's.  They were absoulltly the best.  I was always supported by them 100% in what ever I did.  Dad passed four years ago at 90.5 and my Mom  is doing great at this writing.  She turned 90.5 earlier this month and still lives by herslef and drives daily.  She lives in the Las Vegas area and drives over to visit us a couple of times a year, but then it is only a 300 mile drive!!!!!!    ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

HA....So true, John.
Stan Davis!.......one of the most interesting people I've ever met..... Not that Ed isn't an interesting person, of course. <grin>
Anyone who knew Stan has a few stories, I'm sure. Unfortunately most of the stories may border on bad taste.

I don't know about anyone else, but I enjoy your thread, John.

Thanks for sharing the memories, John!

Jim,

Thank you for being my friend for all of these years.  Here is a little something speical for you.  This is the only photo I have of Jim's little sister Mary Ann.  She was and will always be very speical to me.  This photo was taken in front of Edmistion's home in La Habra I'm guessing about 1966 or 67.

Here is a photo of a rather young John Lazenby behind the counter of the Auto Haus Buena Park retail store.  The shirts were something the Rosevear's came up with, but they didn't last long.  Jim ??? was a regular customer and also a fellow Anaheim High classmate.  He use to spend hours in the store and never buy anything!!

The second shot is the front of the same store with my '63 parked out front.  As stated before this was a dangerous place to park as the traffic was heavy and there were a lot of accidents.  Today I wouldn't consider parking anything I owned there.

This site has been torn down and the only thing that is still there is a sign that directs you to the 5 freeway.  Everything may be gone, but the memories are still with me.

A photo of Lynn (The Weasle) Rosevear in his "turbo hair" format.  This was taken in his office at the 6460 Dale St. warehouse probably in the mid '70's.  He was probably just getting ready to "zick out and take care of some hockey puck".  That was one of this standard statements.

This was shot I think about 1985 in our back yard.  Left to right are;  Dwight MaGill (VW;s Limited), John Lazenby (VW's Limited & DKP I), Pete Dayton (DKP I), Gary Michael Huggins (DKP I) and Don McKay (kind of VW's Limited).  Don never owned a VW, but was a class mate of all of us.  Over the years he has worked on Top Fuel Cars and still does head work from his home in the Las Vegas area.

MaGill and Huggins are no no longer married to the gals with them, but the rest of us are.  The dog in the photo was our Dingo, Boomer and she was a great loving friend.

A shot of me on board the USS Coral Sea CVA-43.  This was taken October 01, 1967 on the 06 level as I was taking a break.  We were in the combat zone directly off the coast of Viet Nam launching air craft.  This was my first tour of two.  I served for 24 months and drew combat pay for 19 of those 24 months.

Here is a story of a somewhat regular activity we use to do.  On Tuesday nights some of us would meet at the DKP club house on Chestnut St.   We would all pile into Doug (The Mass ) Gordon's '72 bus.  He would drive us to the Anaheim Convention Center to attend Roller Derby !!  Sometimes the gals would come with us as well which just made it that much more fun.

We would sit way up high and scream and yell and basically just be obnoxious.  Our team was the L.A. Thunderbirds and I do remember on one of the other teams (the bad guys) there was a large gal named "Baby Rocko".  We would all scream her name out and when she and everyone else in the place would look up at us we would spread our legs (the guys only), point at our croutches.  :o :o :o :o  Finally a 98 pound usher would come up and tell us to knock it off.  In unison we would all fip him off and he did nothing.

After the games were over we'd all pile back into Dougs bus which at the time was very new.  Doug didn't want to wait in line to exit the lot, so he would drive over the parking stops with all of us inside.  Then off for some food and back to the club house.  They were usually late nights and we'd be very tired the next day, but what fun it was....... ::) ::) ::)

Below are two of those tickets.  Note the price of admission.

A photo of my '63 in June of '71 at the DKP I Bug-In display at OCIR.  Note the Edmiston sign leaning next to the car.  This was just prior to it coming apart and becoming the Butternut car.

Another shot of the Bug-In display with the front of my '63 to the right.  People in this shot are Christie and I think the two sisters Valarie and Malarie.  Jim Brooks can provide details on these two.  The older guy I think was someone's Dad.

Once again at the Bug-In.  Left to right are Christie, Ed Craig, Stan Davis, Stan's unknown date, Bob (Hanious Backorderous) or (Horrible Hanson) Hanson, an Auto Haus employee and his family.  I think the camper to the right belonged to Ron or Lynn Rosevear.  Note the large Auto Haus sticker on the door.

This photo was taken at the house Christie was renting before we were married.  For you locals it was at the corner of Palm St. and Harbor Blvd. in Garden Grove and has just recently been torn down.

My '63 was apart to be painted the Warbonnet Yellow.  You can see the two bar ready to transport it to the paint shop.  I think Art Alaverez used his parents Buick as the tow vehicle.

The American's on the front of the car are the two originals I purchased from the gal driving the Baja Bug after I chased her down.  They cost me $40 plus two rims and I paid for the tire mounting.  These wheels had left and right had threads for the knockoffs which I believe to be very early production.  As I recall the originals had a two prong knockoff and the later ones had three prongs.  I can't rember what happend to these two wheels, but I'm guessing I sold them after obtaining the five new ones that are displayed in the Butternut format.

In the background is then my 1970 Vert that I purcahsed new.  It had a 32NDIX Zenith, S&S headers, 5.5 VW chrome wheels with stock caps and Perelli Centuratos.  This was the car that Christie and I took our honeymoon up north in.  It was know as "Reggy the Rag Top".

When I was in the Navy a guy I worked with was named Andy Wanasack or more affectionaly known as "TANK" due to his size.  Anyway, Andy and I use to go back and fourth about fast VW's against fast Mopars.  He was a Dodge guy and always talked about blowing the doors off those VW's.

He did this drawing and gave it to me some 42 years ago and I kept it.  I have no idea where Andy is today, but I do remember he was from California.  To bad he never net Mike Mahaffee and his 2180 split window !!!   :o :o :o

A photo of DKP I founding member Gary Michael Huggins in tank training.  This was taken August 01, 1967 and was prior to him becoming a helicopter pilot.  He was shot down at least once in Nam while flying, but lived to tell about it.  He is also the guy that came up with the name "Der Kleiner Panzers" and the logo.

Mike now lives in Green Valley, Az. which is just outside Tucson and we talk regurally.  His parents are what I'd consider to be my second parents.  Unfortunately his Mom Margaret is not doing well at all currently.  Sweet people, and for any of you old timers that ever met them I'm sure you would agree.

Christie and I also consider ourselves privliged to call you friend and neither of us use the term lightly.  Thanks to you for your dedication to the VW world and we both hope you never quit.

Best,

J & C

Here is a shot of the Butternut car in January of 1972 in the driveway at the Palm/Harbor Blvd. address in Garden Grove.  Christie and I had been married for five months at this time.  The car was actually at Becker's being painted when we were married in August of '71.

You will note that the wheels are not yet painted the dark brown to match the interior and sunroof.  Also no caps as I guess I had not purchased the non-knockof type yet.  When I did I think the cost was about $20 for the set of four.  The warehouse I purchased them from was very close to Clearman's Steak n' Stein and I swear I could smell the cheese bread.. ::) ::) ::)

I also note a green VW in the background which could be Mahaffey's split.  We used to gather at this location because the front yard was big and we could get lots of cars there and got good exposure from the traffic going by.

A younger Dave Greiner (PROFORMANCE) at the Dale St. Auto Haus warehouse picking up some parts.  I'm guessing Dave had his own store by this time.  I was at Dave's place last week and although he looks a bit more gray he is the same mild manner great guy...........

A photo of a much younger and thinner Paul Opperman (DGVA).  Paul worked both the warehouse and retail stores.  We are still very close friends to this day.  His wife Sue grew up right around the corner from where I did and she is a decendent of one of the founding families of Anaheim.  Some of you Anaheimer's might remember Weiser's Sporting Goods on then Center St., later Lincoln Ave.

This photo I believe was taken at the San Diego Zoo back in the early 70's.  Front row is Bill McMillian and Mike (where is Pleasure) Lar Lar, Larson.  Second row back is Sergio Rampone and Danny Zapppla (sp).  Way in the back center standing is Doug Gordon watching out that none of the animals in the cages got to us.

Thank you so much for sharing all the pictures and memories!

Such a small world John! We celebrated my wife's 46th birthday today at her favorite place on earth, the beach. We are high school sweethearts from Garden Grove High School, class of 80 & 81, married since 1985. Ironically, we almost rented that house on the corner of Palm & Harbor shortly after we were married.  You're right, the yard was perfect for parking a boatload of VW's!!

Wish the wife a Happy Birthday for us!

Dustin,  I remember you told me that you and your wife were from Garden Grove.  I didn't know you tried to rent the house, but I can tell you when we lived there the back yard looked like a bombing site with holes all over.  We never did much back there except let our dog Sadie reside.

I drove by G.G. High today on the way to work.  The Carnies were packing up from the Strawberry Festival and I thought I caught a glimse of Stan Davis.. :o :o :o :o

Didn't I meet your wife at Edmistons's just before the Bug-In?  If so she was a mail carrier and very attractive.  Hey I may be old, but I still can see.. ::) ::) ::)

Will you be at Cars & Coffee this weekend?  More of you VW guys need to make a showing.

Okay, back from Disneyland and I have just a few more photos and stories at this time.  This is a shot of myself with Shakey Jake's (Chuck Babbet) sedan.  Nice ride !!!!  I think this was taken at the Bug-In in '71 or '72.  Note the burgundy Levi cords I'm wearing.  These were very fashionable to us DKP guys back in the day....

A couple of photos of VW's Limited member Ron Reeves and his then girl friend Lori Snowden.  These were taken in a photo booth.  You younger guys will know nothing about them I'm sure.

Ron's step dad Jim Gary was a very successful dentist in Fullerton and they lived in Sunny Hills which was and still is I guess the rich area of Fullerton.  Ron was a good guy, but a real goof ball.  I can remember him waxing his car in the garage and getting so tired he laid on his side to do the lower part of the car.

In November of 1964 I was invited to go with the family to Las Vegas for the weekend.  Ron and I left right after school on Friday and drove his '63 green sunroof car over.  We stayed in the original Flamangio Hotel and were actually in Buggy Seigle's room.  It had a huge closet that originally was Buggy's private elevator.

Dr. Gary showed us a first class weekend and we saw several performers including Eddie Fisher and Wayne Newton.  This was when Wayne Newton was just beginning.  Also we got to see Casius Clay, later Mohamad Allie work out before a major fight.  They would allow no one to smoe in the area.

On the trip home the cloth sunroof blew off and it was very cole for most of the trip.  I haven't seen Ron in years, but I know he still lives in the same house and Sarge has seen him at the dealership.

A shot of me I believe at Auto Haus in Orange, CA.  I don't know who took this, but I was doing some paper work as I was one of the few employees who could read and write.  This is why I made those big "Weasle" bucks back in the day.. ::) ::) ::) ::)

This photo was taken at Fred and Margaret Huggins' home I'm thinking in the early '80's.  Mike and Leaneah, now divorced and Christie and myself.  Their only daughter Kaycee just graduated from college a couple of weeks ago.

Marc

For the moment I have no other photos or stories, but I'll keep looking.

I needed to reply to Marc's comments regarding Stan Davis.  I've said for the past several decades that if I ever had to write a story of my most unforgetable character it would be without a shadow of a doubt based on Stan Davis and the stories that go with him.

Here is one that Christie and I were remembering at dinner last night.  When the club use to go to the drags at Carlsbad Raceway we can remember Stan sitting on a trash can metal lid and being towed by a bus.  It got hot immediately and he jumped up yelling in pain.  Next he tried standing on it and his shoe soles started to melt.

Just another day at the office... :o :o :o :o

I have no idea what ever happened to any of that stuff.  Remember I left Auto Haus after 10.5 years and they were around for a couple more.  Stuff like that no one ever thought would be collectable in years to come.

My Dad owned and operated a Pepsi bottleing plant prior to us moving west in 1954.  I was weened on the stuff and we even had a fountain in our basement.  Today I prefer diet Coke and every time I take a drink I can hear my Dad grumbling.

I have a large NGK neon clock at home and am trying to find some place in my garage of 1584 sq. ft. to display it.  Does that give you an idea of how much crap I have??  Unfortunately a good amount of it is Chrysler related memorabila.  I have things such as huge blow up photos of Hemi engines that were used in commericals I did for Chrysler and even a sign photo from Bob Lutz when he was President of Chrysler along with a letter to me from him on his letterhead.

If you come to Nick's next weekend please re-introduce yourself.  It has been a long time and I see faces, but can't put names with them.

I'll probably drive this:

Do you have a regular rotation order that determines which car you drive?   :-X

I try to drive them chronogolicy (sp), so I start with either the '55 New Yorker Wagon or Imperial and move through the Letter Cars.  Once that is done it is time the '63 VW and last the M5 and then it starts all over again.  Lately the VW has not been in the rotation due to being apart.  Hopefully that will change soon. :( :( :( :(

Over the years I've done many commericals for Chrysler with the cars and several other shows.  Here is a segmet of a full program that was done on all 6 Chryslers two years ago.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBGSxqkS0sg

I've also had the cars in many books over the years.  Here is one of the latest that has (60) great photos of five of the Hemi cars.  http://www.amazon.com/Hemi-Muscle-Cars-Darwin-Holmstrom/dp/product-description/0760331723

I just thought of another story regarding Ron Reeves.  After his VW days he bought a '65 Plymouth Belivder with a 426 wedge.  The car was jacked way up and Ron was a wild man behind the wheel.  I remember one night Christie and I were in the back seat coming down Harbor Blvd. in Fullerton.  We got into a drag race with something, but it was a long down hill run and we were flying!!! :o :o :o

Ron managed to get the car sideways and I thought we were going to roll.  We had to be doing about 120.  Somehow he managed to get the thing straight, but I think all of us check our pants after that ride.

My first date with Christie was in the same type of car except it was a 383 with an Art Carr trans.  Long story of how I got this car, but a couple of times Ron and I raced them and I put him on the trailer each time.  That 383 was faster than a 426, but it could have been the drivers and transmissions.

Sometime later we used his car to go to Christie and Lori's senior prom.  Ron took us to the Beverly Hills Hotel for dinner.  When we left he did an awsom burnout.. ::) ::) ::) ::)

A photo below of the wild man..... 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Will you be at Cars & Coffee this weekend?  More of you VW guys need to make a showing.

You're correct about that. I need to start going again. Been too busy, lately. I'm willing to bet that most of the gorgeous Chrysler cars that I've photographed there are yours, John.

 ;D

I'll have to dig those out and post 'em up, here.

They were probably mine as I'm the only one in the area that brings them out.  These are very rare in that in 11 years of production less that 17,000 were produced.  Some automotive aurthorities consider them the Duesenberg's of the 1950's and there are very few survivors today.

The little one in this photo is Lenny Rosevear, Lynn Rosevear's youngest boy

It has been great to see the early shots of Auto-Haus and the Warehouse as I literally grew up in all of these locations. Remember John, the beach store was opened ten days before I was born and to date I have the only birth certificate in the world showing "Owner of Auto-Haus" as Fathers ocupation. Please give Christy my best and the you both will always be like family to me.

Hey John,

Here is a shot of my 67 looker in the mid 70's at the late Costa Mesa Autohaus. I was in town visiting for the holidays and took a shot in front of the store. My wife Anne went to Tustin High and she always stopped in to visit her Mom in Tustin while I hit all the VW shops.  Your pictures bring back a lot of memories of the time and era we all started enjoying the hobby in.
