The Cal-look Lounge

What do you think about superbeetles and other late models as cal-lookers?

In my opinion, cal-look is pretty much a style with a certain set of "rules" created by the cal-look-pioneers back in the days when there were no super beetles. Of course these rules can be applied to any beetle, or any car for that matter, but would it then be a true cal-looker? If you got a late model, or a super beetle, there are other styles that match those cars much better than cal-look.

Even though there was the possibilty to treat a 1302 the same way like the older bugs back in the 1970s (Empi GTV kits) and generate something related to Cal Look
(BTW. What would be the "definition" for a car equipped with all that Empi GTV stuff ???).
But a "long nose" bug´s proportions somehow don´t match the Cal Look related typical visual appearance.
Furthermore, a superbeetle back in the 1970s was a new car which then couldn´t be afforded by most of the people who wanted to build a quick cal look car. The pre- 1965 bugs where used cars being relatively cheap-so most of the Cal Lookers where pre-1965 cars.
Coming to performance: A superbeetle´s weight is +100 kg compared to a 1200, so you need add-on engine power to gain same performance on street & strip....

 I think the Old School Cal-Look is suitable for all cars up to 1970. These cars don't have those "ears" for ventilation behind the rear window and still had nice classic colours.
 Super beetles (02's and 03's) look way too 70ies for a Cal-looker, and I think that the indicators in the front bumper and also the Elephant-feet are not done for a Cal-Looker...
 But a 1200 up to '74 would make a nice Cal-Looker though...
 
 I would put the border somewhere between 70&75... ( 02/03's excluded )

 

I have this 1972 Hot Rod Magazine showing all the cars of the DKP car club back then...black and white and even Gene Berg did fit in the mag......the white Arons car is there and Flemmings oval and type 3:s........So I like the late model cars...they were part of the deal in my way of thinking........One of the best examples are "The Dumper" a Super beetle from back in the day and a lot of inspiration to me!! Late models are cool!!

This brown/green -69 looker is my favourite. Big motor, cool wheels and tires and a perfect 70`s paintjob. And of course, dual mufflers. No fat boy muffler

Even if it is hard to imagine, but late ('68-'72 regular) beetle were a big part of the scene back in the 70s and early 80s. Jim "Sarge" Edmiston had one, Bill Schwimmer had one... I can't say if they used supers as well, but if you have a look in the June 76 issue you will see, that they showed (in the Cal Look section) how to lower a 1302! And how about John Deans 1303 Looker? He was a member of the DKK (Der Kleiner Kampfwagens), a Cal Look Club in the late 70s and early 80s, that started after the demise of DKP II. That car has it all... 135-15s and 185/70s on 5,5s Fuchs, 1776 cc with IDAs, period perfect interieur, single color...

Well, I have to admit.... it would look stange in between our cars...

Like with everything else it is a matter of taste. I personally don’t like the look of 1302 and 1303 Bugs. However every once in a while there is someone proving the opposite by having good ideas and proving superb workmanship. But beside 1302/03 who could not appreciate something like this….

I always think that real Cal-lookers must be a pré'67 bug.. Not!! ;D  I still like the Late-lookers more and more.

Late lookers are ok, but they never get close to the style of a pre-64 beetle (67 rock sometimes, though). But forget about those 1302 and 1303, they're awful... (http://www.stray-cats.de/forum/images/smiles/a_puke.gif)
Even if in 19-whenever that famous cal look personality mr.x should have owned a superbeetle. If I feel like having a panoramic windshield in front of me I prefer a Saab 900. Ok that's my opinion.  :)

Hey Speedwell, I like the blue "MY72VW" a lot. And John Dean's 1303 is really the exception to the rule "Supers are ugly as #¤%"  ;D

To be honest, I started this topic to see what is a general opinion. In fact I'm building a mid '70s cal inspired 1302.
I was wonderring a lot if it is a point in styling it that way, although I ain't no guru in the subject.
I've found lots of reasons, but they were really been found to convince myself.
I'm doin' it because I got a little obsessed by the cal-look and been owning this particular bug for years (restored it and stuff) and that's my first and only car.
I got used to it and can't just get rid of it just because it doesn't really suit the early days style.
I live in a place, where getting a pre '65 in a reasonable condition is extremely hard.
You could say, that "bacik in the days" there were no or at least very few superbeetles in the look and people did not buy these new models, cause older were cheaper and bougut pupously for the street and strip racing preperation. True. But note the picture from Keith Seume's book showing a Aronson's car next to brown bug of Mark Thurber. Thurber's car looks completely stock in that pic. There could be a situation in the mid 70ties for example, where sombody already owned a bug and after some time decided to style it just as his neighbour did :)
I don't really get this, Y' know - that one model suit the style and another doesn not. I personally think that the california look is an attitude first and gear afterwards.
I belive you can do a Cal-looker out of Fridolin if you want. Keith said that in the begining ther were no real apreciation for convertibles, because nobody really raced a convertible. In the begining nobody really raced a Ghia also, so? There were lots of racing ghias 3 or 5 years later, cause somebody proved at the track that it's possible. Coming back to convertibles - note the Ritchie Webb's cabrio... It runs low 10s. And it is still a streel legal cabrio. Even respeccts the strict cal-look rules.
I decided to do it, cause my engine builder - Chris Burns have regularily raced his "mellow Yellow" 1303. And that's a reason for me :D
  

Don't worry, play with what you got... that always comes out the best. Don't try to get your super to look older... it will only turn ugly.
I would get a set of Empi eightspokes real ones if the budget allows. Or get copies and weld in the base that you screw the cap to (like the originals) then sandblast them and cover the centre in medium grey with polished edge on the rim. ALL other copy wheels should be avoided if you are going to pull this of.
I would get rid of the trim... ALL of it...  Some nice/ strange colour, + cal-look rubber and one piece windows... and really go for that late seventies look... forget the early cal-look look... it doesn't really fit supers...  :-X

I guess you could do allot worse than to be inspired by the pictures in this thread.... it will be what it's all about in the coming years... at least here in Norway  ::)

I think late models can work and the proof is out there, there's some nice ones on this thread. My girlfriend is in the process of having a '73 done and though we're changing a couple of things none of the changes are late to early type mods so it'll show it's age. Bumpers, no trim, Fuchs and a motor would be a reasonable summary of where the car is going.  :)

Thanks for the post about my 70' beetle.Back then late model Cal Look cars were everywhere...I don't know how the mind set that they did'nt exist got started, it was probably by somebody who was'nt even born yet..At the time I got into VW's,about '80-'81 it was just fine to hot rod a late model.They were plentiful & cheap,A typical 10 year old car & you did'nt have to do as much work as an earlier car.It was still cool to have an early car,ovals were plentiful,as a matter of fact I sold a 57 sunroof to do that orange car,but the oval was a piece of crap & quite a bit more work than the orange car.That photo was taken @ Greg Brinton's parents house about '82 or '83.As for super beetles,they were here & there but not as many people did them as standard beetles.I do remember a 71 super owned by Ron Lesnick ,typical cal look mods 2l fuchs ect.It had a IDA motor w/ nitrous.It was the 1st VW I every saw driving around w/ Firestone slicks & it was about the fastest street car around & it was a SUPER BEETLE!! It kicked the crap out of a lightweight race sedan out of Gene Berg's & Roger Crawfords shops on the street one night...This is a cool forum,I hope it does'nt get overrun by the race car crowd like that other forum.    Later  Bill

thanks for that statement! That's what many people (including me) think about the original one. It was fun in the beginning with Mark Herbert, Steph Szantai, Jim Ratto, Rick Zavala, you and even guys like James Lutz, but after a while more and more people joined in, talking about race cars and not Cal Look. And as I said to JHU the other day: I am more of a Cal Look guy that is into racing then a racing fan who is into Cal Look.

As a matter of fact, I'm building a late looker too. The base for my project is a 80'ies Mexican 1300. Plans are to get it painted paprika red, a set of sprintsars in 4.5 and 5.5 inch, hot engine in region of 2165, maybe some simca rally seats. I'm not so shure about the bumpers, maybe Tbars or buggy bars but it need something 'cause it should be my daily driver, so we'll see about that.

And whta about type 3 lookers like Dyno Don's notch. fully dechromed, big engine and BRM's? I really like that car.

I'm new here, I'm Rebel's friend. I like those picks of '70- 1200's cal-lookers :) I'm a happy owner of '74 Mexico and I was wondering wat to do wit it (of cors in cal-look style cuz I'm in to it very much). I wonted to give him some old look by welding an old front and rear (screwing old pre 67 fenders etc...) and now I think I will only weld the "ears" behind the rear windows and put an old fenders at the back, and rest will be like it is at the moment :) (of corese the engine will be bigger then 1200 :) it will be standard 1600 with two Dellorto's DRLA 40 and MOTO SPORT exaust - I know that isn't power monster but I'm juts a poor polish student  ;) oh and my "Kermit" will run on LPG  ;D like he was running all the time ... He will be probobly the only LPG Cal-looker in the world ;D) what do You think, is it a good idea?

welcome to the forum!

Yes, it's a good idea to get rid of the "ears" and put some old fenders and taillights on. Then just lower it in the front and put your engine in – perfect!

And don't worry about your 1600 with Dells – you will have fun with it, especially with the short gear ratios from your  original gearbox. AND: Most of us startet with a small engine. Only a few of us have/had the money to build a big engine right away.

I think that mirror is a "Race Trim wide angle panel mirror" I've got one in the box and its are MASSIVE its almost as wide as my buggy screen  :D

As I Said to Rune the other day: In a few years we will be throwing out those big troubleful engines, lower our cars in all four corners and put in a HUGE Stereo With at least 4 15" inch subwoofers. All that together with louvering jobs done on all four fenders, hood and decklid.  ;) Thats what almost everyone in Scandinavia did in the start of the 1990ies...... They called it" Cal-Look" back then.

Continueing the 1302 cal project...

I've recently bought Porsche cookie cutters, but they're 7 inch wide. I wonder how to install them under stock fenders.
Anyone has an idea? I think that the most sensible solution is to put as narrow tyres for the front as possibe and put some spracers/adapters, but I can't figure out their size. I don't have a store with spacers 'round the corner, just gotta order from CSP for exaple, that's why it's very little place for mistake here.
Anybody has ans expirience with 7" wheels here?

Everyone has there favourite or ultimate year of Beetle -  which may make some owners come across as being model year focussed or Pre '68 snobs.
In my opinion it's important that people invest time and money into '68 and on VWs, otherwise before we know it they will be a very rare sight.
In the last 15 years the number you see on the street has dropped massively - especially in the U.K.
The ethos behind the California look can be used when modifying any air cooled VW Beetle really, and if done with the commitment to quality which has become the norm today - who wouldn't stop and have a good look at it?

So, does that mean that i wasn't all that wrong when i ran my 1970 T-1 1500 on 5,5" sprint stars, (rear) 4,5" (front), threw away the bumpers and the back seat, lowered it up front and mounted an EMPI leather rimmed steering wheel, EZR shifter, speedwell instruments, bulit a not too hot 1915 engine with a glaspack muffler and so on?

Well, i still got the "no no" from most of the crowd for running a "too new" car for the cal look style back in 1998! For the record, i was not born "back then" when the time was right, but after playing with VW's for a few years i knew what i liked, and i knew what was right for me, not everyone else. Dare peopel!

How about this car. First on wide-5 rims for a little Old Speed look, now on Mahle Pedrini rims. Like that car! 8)

I think this car is from " The Volks Chancelor" vw club.

Do you think the 'fat' T-bars work with the short bonnet & ass? We're in the middle of one and the trim is gone but I'm not sure what to do about bumpers. We have N.O.S. 1200 wings as well as N.O.S 1300 one's but I'm inclined to stay original though with that combo I think that would mean bumpers. I don't think those T-bars work too great though I don't actually dislike any of the cars pictured that are wearing them.  :)

Keep it original ;) To me the fat t-bars are ok on the right car. Have you thought about buggy bumpers?

I can remember several cal look super beetles ( some quite fast ). As well as more late cal look cars than you could shake a stick at. There were no big big discussions on what look a car had because there really were no catagories that people discuss today. It was more a matter of ...That looks cool .....or  ....that guy doesn't get it...   My brothers EMPI demonstrator  ( A '73 ) was A car with a big reputation of being fast ...and it was.... And was always refered to as a cal look car. It had 145s up front 185s in back and was lowered. All Empi cars I knew at the time were fast and lowered. The only ones that weren't seemed to be the ones in the Empi literature; although I do have at least one picture in an EMPI catalogue of a lowered GTV.

When I got my first VW (a 1970 std.) the later cars were plentiful, but not as "cool" as the early cars.  Still, you work with what you have, right?  Both my brother and I owned late-model sedans (his was a '69).  We both wound up having 12 second street cars, which back then was not only FAST, but it was the ultimate Cal-Look goal.

Here are a couple of shots of the 70.  One wound up in Ultra in my buddy Dave Conklin's column about late model cars, along with his wise-crack about my 80's haircut. ;D  There is a shot of the '70 with its primered paint following the de-chroming job. 8)  The other shots show my pair of late model cars I owned in 1986.  The red car was my '69 daily driver with a 1776cc engine.

I've come to love the '68 through '72 cars and have often thought about finding one and making it a daily driver (or at least a Spring/Summer/Fall driver).  Make a nice 2-litre for it, add a set of fuchs, bumpers and lowback seats, and cruise down the highway! 8)

Thanks.  Many of the cars mentioned above were my inspriation.  The HeadShop car in the Hot VW's pic earlier in this post was a HUGE influence.  That car was awesome!  The Geno Combs car above was another.  "Try my 69" was painted on the decklid of Geno's car. 

Me, well, I just had a personalized California license plate that read "LITLQIK". ;D

There was a request for pictures and info on my brother's EMPI demonstrator...My brother and I took a number of old slides of that car in the 70's. My brother has them but can't remember where they are stashed. He promises me he'll find them. Any way, he bought the car from Timmons Volkswagen in '74 with a grand total of 43 miles on it. It was Porsche India Red with the rare gold C stripe kit on it. It had the full gauge package, steering wheel, etc. 3/4 inch sway bars front and rear... The wheels were the little known Empi slotted mags with the four ear caps (I promptly painted the slotted areas a matching red for him ) Engine was 74 by 90  (1883) , it had nice heads on it and a real tourqie empi cam , 10.5 to 1 compression and dual 44 Webers. He ran Chevron white gas in it ( i can still smell that stuff coming coming out of the pump) The car ran 14.0 on radials with the belt on and granny shifting. He had often talked of going with close gears but never did...He used to make alot of ski trips to Mammoth Lakes in it... My brother taught me how to work on these things starting in '74; I was 10 years old and a fanatic. Late one night in '77 we were rebuilding the carbs and went out for a test drive about 2 in the morning. We pulled off on a side street, he unbuckled , got out and said " Slide over..." He actually let me drive his car and even get on it out on Paramount Blvd.... I didn't sleep for the next 3 days....It was three long years before I could get my drivers license and take over the raines of my 64 Empi car That my dad bought brand new and I came home from the hospital as a baby in....

I've a 68 1300 bug. Sure not the best model to built a cal look.  ;)
But I think that, back in the middle of the 70's, the VW enthusiast that buy a VW , takes the best used car He can find in his area. An Oval, an early 1200 or the newer 1300 model, wich one take ? Just a question of feeling. What's the best choice?  buy the older or the newer one?
And after all, there is as more as cool  items to modify a later model than a earlier model.  :D

 We're going to fit the 145r15 and 205/70r15 tires to my Fat Lip Formula Vee wheels tomorrow, and fit the wheels to my bug the day after...
 So saturday my bug will finally be a true looker. Too bad it'll still look like $h!# because it needs a full paintjob... :(

 So soon another early (sept '67) late looker to be seen on the streets... :)

Hi everyone,

I must admit that I'm a kind of fan of the Late Lookers (but I do have a weak spot for true style Cal Lookers as well).
As a matter of fact, I'm building a Late Looker which will serve as a daily driver.
The base for my Late Looker is a '86 Hecho en Mexico bug which allready served as a daily for several years but was in need of a full-on resto.
Some alternations will be made to make it look a little older, so the big elephantfoot style rearlights will be swapped for some '68 1300 style rearlights.
The body will be painted Paprika Red so the chosen detailed Pedrini's will suit the ride very fine I guess.
The powerplant to get the Mexican moving will be a 1914 breathing through a pair of 44 IDF (but these will be swapped by a home-built EFI).
To get the ride-height dailled in correctly the front will get a pair of Spax coilovers and pair of CB-dropped spindles. The stopping power will be improved by disk up front and type 3 drums in the back.
I hope to get the ride finishes soon so I can put my daily driven '65 1500S notch in rest and keep it from the daily abuse...
I'll post some pictures when the ride is finished but here's a pictures of how things look as this very moment...

I've notice that most of them keep the original's bigs bumpers. I've very often hesitated to changes it for black T-Bars. It looks good on the back, put front, is not very beautiful  :-\
On the other hand, I like buggy bars  ;D

Buggy bumpers look best with the the holes in the front apron and rear fenders closed up. I think your car looks tits with the black t-bars :)

I think it will not be "period correct". Buggy bars are more early 80's mods. Leave it like this, it's awesome  ;)

Sweet... it even has the savana beige running boards. Mine had them when I bought it but they were all dry rotted and cracked so I too the original board sand blasted and powder coated the black covers put on.

Nope they were already in use in the mid 70s. I never did understand why people like them though. Just my opinion.

My uncle bought this '69 as his first car. he was the first owner. now my mother owns it. it's standing dry and warm and hasn't been moved for at least 20 years. My uncle sold it to my mother in the 70ies. I can still remember, when she drove me around, while I was a kid and jumping around in the rear trunk. :-)
Finally I've got my mother's permission to take care of the bug and get it registered again. She doesn't know anything of my "late looker" plans, tho. :-) I haven't found a good way to tell her. Maybe this helps:

cool green tom  you want to know  ;D , my 61 don't run at that time but, i've an another cal look  and i drove this one  9 year each day and all seasons on genuine wheels (empi 5 & empi 8 & flat 4 brms) yes each day  8) , And I crossed + of 60000kms with this car which now waits for a new restoration and certainly with very expensive details  ::) because I like only the true details of period and then I don't take myself for somebody of superior because I have such or such details thus here is but each the opinion to be few that you,  you don't like my car either   ;)

I saw you'd ripped it apart, saw it on one of the blogs I think. We're trying to fix up a late car ('73) done over here at the moment. Hopefully it'll be finished by the end of this summer though that depends on a few things coming together according to a plan and the problem I have with that iis I don't have time right now to maintain the plan properly. We did briefly think about trying to get it together for the trip down to Bug-In and the ferry is booked for it but I can't see that working out. Considering the car's late I was suprised at how hard it is to get genuine parts these days.

Yeah it's quite hard, i'm still looking for a lot of metal for the 68 (3 wings, doors, front clip..)...

I hope the car will be ready for vw action but more probably for ddday5, with a new color, a 2110 and the gearbox to go with it...

Nothing of it complete to hand, but I have a couple of it in progress, nothing overly interesting though! We're welding quite a bit of it up whilst it's on the pan to make sure all the shuts and lines are OK (it's braced as well) then once the majority of the body welds are done we'll take it off the pan and deal with each part separately. It's going to be green still, just not the original green though some other details are yet to be decided. It's my other halfs car and she's not 100% on how it will end up, could be Cal-Look, could have a hint of something else.  Things that are settled are the colour, the Fuchs, a 2007cc motor and the interior. I managed to get 5 N.O.S. wings, three appropriate for the car and two 1200 fronts. I think we can use a couple of the original wings maybe though it's too early to say as they're not yet stripped. Bumpers were a pain to locate too. One thing I would say is contact Steve Hook over here for channel bottoms if you need them, infact if you need anything he does use his stuff, the quality is great, (http://www.hookyspanelshop.com/), I had  some repros and then some Mexicans and ditched both as soon as he said he'd make the bottoms, at the time he wasn't doing them.

Having become accustomed to cool shows like DDD I have no interest in being at Action but there's a good chance that I'll be at back at Bitburg for DAS Drag Day IV so maybe see the '68 there...

Are you putting the '68 back as it was or making a few changes? I know the car as it was reasonably well, with our own project in mind I spent quite a long time looking at it whenever I've seen it!

Well the car was okay but a lot of little details were bugging me since i got it. Major change is the color, right now i'm decided for a porsche color, Bahama Yellow (sample here: http://projekt912.cordes-netzwerk.de/bilder/109-0918_IMG.jpg (http://projekt912.cordes-netzwerk.de/bilder/109-0918_IMG.jpg) . I'm keeping the cal look / DKP 2 style, no chromes, black pop-outs, blinkers in the bumpers, etc

I'm also keeping the black interior for now, but i'm putting an empi gt padded steering wheel and an older berg shifter.

The biggest mods will be mechanical with all new pan, pro-drag gearbox and 2110 engine with ida's, of course...

So an all new car, much cleaner with that cal-look style i loved so much when i got it.

Now that i made you all drool, i really have to start a topic ;)

I hope so. We've been watching The Samba and looking at all the lovely cars we could have bought instead, scary! Thing is it's a one owner car that I bought as my first car so it was always going to be about, it's not actually too bad either and hasn't suffered too many poor quality repairs, just one small patch. Still needs a lot of metal doing though.

This may take sometime...


With the overall approach and colour of choice I think there are going to be a few similarities between the revised '68 and our '73. Ours is not going to be the same colour but it does have the same feel as it's from the same period. Maybe they'll be parked up together in Ninove sometime next year?

And what happened? One post by a guy, whos been there "back in the day", and the general "no-no" trend began to fade.
Another posts, and poeple started to say something completely different.
Some pages further some of them even started to say that they eventually liked the "late lookers" :P
C'mon... Next big thing - that Mr Keith's article in UltraVW 'bout late lookers, and some people wrote, thet they're thinking of bouilding a late looker actually :)

 Got myself a nice used front hood, a NOS right side fender, but I'm still looking for an orig. vw fender for the left side before I can get it re-sprayed.
 And I still need to replace that snorring lump of metal in the back by a roaring lump...

 I am also thinking of fitting T or buggy bars and I'm going to ditch the trim on the running boards...

 You know what 'd be the ultimate late looker for me? A VW blue '68 with gold painted spider mags or old fat lip Riviera's like mine with a pair of XZX and a pair of mickey thompson tyres. There's no such car around... Because those late lookers that are around now, they all look kind of the same... (yes mine too)

Late models are very cool. I always loved this one - it belonged to my good friend Ben Bosworth, who died in 2005. Ben bought it as a solid stocker because he thought it would make a good basis for a baja... Then we all got turned more onto Cal Look and the rest is history! Ben had some stickers made that read simply "Late Model Bugs Are Not A Crime"!

One of my current favourites is Jonny Grigg's Texas Yellow '72, whcih ran 12.1's with a nitroused 1914, and is now going full on race car. Jonny has endeavoured to keep it looking much the same - some changes in the wheel department and a rear wing will be pretty much the only difference from the outside!

That was one of the questions on my girlfriends project car, how to resolve that and the trim / no trim thing. We concluded that bumpers were better too. On this subject does anyone have a good match for the factory coating on the inside of a Europa? It's still a low priority as there are other things requiring time so I haven't got around to it yet but I noticed that the finish on the N.O.S one we have is different to the the refinished one we have so it needs to be matched up.

As far as bumpers go - none at all is the way to go. No Tbars, no bumpers, just clean the lines right up! ;D

Actually it depends of the car. Probably combination of factors like trim (color or lack of it), stance, or something, I don't know. Some late Bugs look right without bumpers, but very often - they don't.

I'm thinking what to do with my old Bug (late model) and the idea I have is to keep the bumpers but get rid of trim and use black window frames. But this leaves you with a question about headlight frames and handles (chrome, black, body color?) and then there is a small problem with choosing wheels ;) 

I think since the hood and decklid are so short and "stubby" on a late model, it lends itself better to bumpers, trim or not!

When I was at university in Sheffield there was a local VW parts place that had a red Mexican Beetle parked outside. Factory dechromed, body colour headlight rims and body colour bumpers with the black insert, black handles and mirrors, all factory parts. Even had the smoked rear lenes (elephant's feet though :-X) and green tinted glass. It was lowered in the front just a little bit and had Revolution wheels, but I thought that if the front came down more and the wheels were swapped for 914 2-litres or something similar then it would look superb! You wouldn't want to over-skinny the front tyres (maybe a 175/60 or similar) but there was just something about the look of it that made me look twice.

I have a 69 beetle but it still has the euoblade bumpers on it,is this a european thing?
I know the previous owner swapped the fenders for earlier ones so the car looks pre 60.

im doing a 1200 71 as well atm and im was aming to do exactly what you have done to yours except no t-bars plus iv got a 1641, have you kept the 1200 gearbox?

the colour is.... hehe I woullike to know I bought it like that when it was just a typical sparkafer. The paint job was done only for a moment as I gues. I'll repaint it the saim. when I'll mach the paint I'll tell what colour is it :D

I was in UK for a wille with that bug, drove thre with 1600 and drove back with 1776 as it's now.
Yes it has genuine 1200 box :) drives good looks quite healthy but also quite short (nice for town cruiseing). I drive it quite often for longer yourneys and it's not so bad but 4th could be longer :D

does nobody know this awesome late looker?

Ten or fifteen years ago it would have been hard to imagine it being difficult getting parts for a later car but after months of waiting it looks like we've finally found the right pan in the right quality thanks to a supplier going outside of their normal channels and doing a bit of digging around. A while back these would have been on the shelf at any number of places but they're not right now. In this case I think the panels are out there and it's a short term supply / shipping problem but in other instances we've ended up going down the hand made route to ensure we get the right fit and quality. Now we have the pan it should mean we can finally get on with the finishing and rebuild part of the project though we won't know for sure until it arrives at the shop next Wednesday. This part will have probably ended up being the difference between having the car ready for EBI 3 and not EBI 2 though I'm sure we'll find other delays as we move into the next stage. Whatever though, I think times have changed for the late Bug.  Early cars have always had a cost associated with getting the right parts but none of the air-cooled VWs are young now and it's definitely starting to show. A little off topic I guess!

Mine should be in paint by now! Pan is ready for re-assembly, body comes back this week! No pictures though - I'm completely broken with a torn disc in my back - this is the first time in two weeks i've been able to sit at a computer for more than 2 minutes... :o

I'm glad to see there's more tolerance on late model cars here than, oh, say, on the Samba.  I totally dig the late model Cal Look cars, primarily up to '70 (since that's what I've got ;D)  but my buddy who passed away three years ago had a really nice '73 standard Cal Look Bug with 1915, IDAs and a Berg 5.  Sweet car, that one was, and unfortunatley neither Jason nor the Bug are still with us today.   :'(

Anyway, apparently the shell was painted last night! I saw it briefly yesterday with the inside painted and it looked ace! Different to my original plan, but nice nonetheless... I always thought of anthracite grey (L469) as a blue grey, but this has more brown in it. Changed my idea of blacked out window trim and handles, they're all going back to stock, but no side trim, that just wouldn't be cal look! ;)

I'm very lucky in that my Dad and my friends who I rent my unit with are working on the pan in my absence! Fortunately they're taking pictures - I can't wait to see them too! :D

Really pleased with it - the painter has still got to do all the panels, but Dad and Lee are going to try to get the shell bolted down to the pan by the weekend. Spoken to VW Heritage about when some of the parts are going to be delivered - TMI are having a couple of delays so looks like it'll be next week I get my order. I could do with the headliner and new wiring loom soon to crack on with the rebuild! :D

I bought it from a mate who had gone to Australia travelling for a year - I paid for his garage rent every month and got the car in return! Dad and I replaced the heater channels, did a couple of small repairs on the quarter panels on one side and that was it body wise! Cut and turned beam, built a little 1641, detailed the sprints and that was it - I loved that car. Sold it to a guy who then sold it to his brother, who ran it around for a few years. Lost track of it then. It's the one car I regret selling! :(

Thing is, it's not for me! I was going to build it more traditional late '70's/early 80's cal look and smoke around in it for a while with my 2007 motor and original 8-spokes, then sell it on to fund the '51 resto at a later date. My cousin wants to buy her husband-to-be a Beetle for his 40th birthday and asked if I knew of any good ones... so I volunteered mine. I know it's going to be solid, reliable and above all, safe. Nothing worse than a friend or family member asking you to look out for a car that then turns out to be crap!

Think I've got about 4 weeks to finish it, and my back still isn't right... :o

The tires were 195/60's front and 205/60's rear Pirelli CN36.  Stock front beam with Avis adjusters..., handled like a champ!


I used to be pretty tall, but lately a lot of my height seems to be moving to my wasteline for some reason ::) ;D

Sharon and I bought it new from Don Burns when I got home from the Army in 1969.  It died out in front of the house December of 1992 when two drunks ran their Dually into it.  It had a 1776 with Kad's and an Engle 110 for a long time, followed by Weber 44IDF's..., then a 2017 with Okrasa 78.4, Engle 120, and IDA's.  The 2017 never seemed to be quite "right"  as I switched up the ring and pinion from 4:12 to 3:88 and I couldn't get the tune spot on.  It was a fun car to drive and we toured a lot in it (see On Vacation thread).  I was sad to see it go.

I like the whole different feel/look a later car has.
They look better with more tire than a 67-earlier car. They seem "tougher" not so dainty and fragile. Closer to their big cousin the 911 too. And I can attest, a nicely setup IRS car with some business under the engine lid sure is a lot of fun to drive. Seems like later cars don't get so wrapped up in the "what makes a cal look car?" hype. They're "allowed" to be real cars.

There's a guy working very hard to go back to (Late) basics.

Funny, as lately I have been thinking of swaping out the 145s on the front of the '67 for something wider. Going around corners is fun.

Hey Sarge! I really like your 69', +, you bought it new, must of been a blast to drive, the being tight and all, and bad ass looking. Sorry to hear what had happen to it. Question, if ya had that car today, what would you change? or would you? What kind of look would you give it? With the high caliber of your 67', I'm sure it would be just as high if not higher. Man the late bugs seem to be coming out of the woodwork!   ::) ;D

Written like a fellow blue '69 owner ;)!  I'd have no chrome, one piece glass, match painted handles and headlight doors.  As much as I like red, I'd probably go with Lotus White or a cream color and do the interior in a cashmere beige.  I still like the traditional look of BRM's but the car is a four lug, so Id probably choose Fuchs 914 Alloys (full polish, no chrome).  The bumpers would be paint to match, too with a black rubber deco strip and turn signals built in.  It would have to have a monster motor, too ;D  Thanks for asking!

the engine is a 2109cc and so far has run a 14.1quarter in full street trim but hoping to break the into the 13's next time out  ;D

One of those way back up there.  The blue one with the dual quiet packs looks to be Steve Hollingsworth's car.  That is one sweet driver.  He has a mileage motor in it right now.  I think it is an 84x85.5, Berg-5 and a genuine cruise control that he made with parts from a water cooled VW. 

The Blue one with the fat muffler is a clubmember (Dennis).

What do you guys think off one-piece windows...If yes, wich kits are the best ?

I really enjoy vent windows, one-piece windows makes the car a bit "modern" in my opinion.

It got put on the back burner whilst I've been working on my truck. The truck still isn't quite done, but I couldn't wait any more. So the beam and front disc's are completed and ready to be dropped in, I got the wheels polished and mounted, and I'm currently trying to get a shine out of what's left of the paint. It ain't gonna buff out as nice as yours but it'll be fun. Once I finish with the paint, I'll turn my focus on cleaning up the interior. I'll let ya know when it starts coming together. Hopefully soon.

My paint is Toga white and the fender beading is kinda beige like. I'm gonna kinda clean it up and try to save it. Not sure if it's the same color as the stuff WW sells.

The green car belongs to Arnaud - he was made a member this summer at EBI2.
He works at Pat's together with Xavier.
The car is a 69 that was in a very very bad state (just as bad as Roland's).
Arnaud did the full resto himself, and I have to say it is now super clean.
The engine is a 1915cc with... IDAs (of course) and the wheels are from Weld.

1970 1500 beetle, on a 1972 pan (hence the K-registration!), Day Mouldings wings, MWS 8-spokes (soon to have 155/70 front tyres) and TMI interior. All welding work done by Dad and myself, lead loading and initial filling by me, final prep and paint by a mate, Roger, and rebuild by some truly awesome people who wouldn't let me give up - MASSIVE thanks to my Dad, Lee, Debbie and my brother Duncan for all doing far more work in the rebuild than I was able to. Thanks again. (where's the hug smiley? :D )

Now, I've just got to convince the new owner (my cousins husband-to-be) that he really needs a 1776 with twin 40s and dual quiet packs, and some Lucas indicators on the front to replace the temporary ones, and track down some taller rear tyres! ;D

I'm building a type 4 (100x71) and have a pair of IDA to put on it, letter i will probably switch to fuel injection, and i'm very curious to hear how runs jours. And the bug looks fantastic! All these nice late lookers here... fresh!

the engine is a little 2.2 Liter ;) its a 1984 mexico beetle. i´ve get the car from my parents on my 18th birthday 5 years ago with original 40000km and no rust. and then i build it to a late looker now. i like my car so much. im so happy if i see it every day in my garage.

the black one with the door open is a really really nice one in  my opinion. it belongs to a friend off mine and although it has a small engine it is really cool.

just to make it all clear i was indeed refering to the belgian looker and not the equally impressive black car off Ramierez...

so the belgian one is a bit on the custom side off things. and yes the wings are welded on the apron front and back. but i like it anyway as it is all pretty sublte with the black paint. the guy said as well to never weld the fenders to the car again... guess it is like one piece windows.  :P

Always nice to hear from old club members.  Last week, Bob Hanke from DKP II contacted the club's website looking for a t-shirt... sent along a nice picture of his club ride from the past.  Bob no longer owns the car and has long since moved to Idaho, but still has a fondness for the Cal Look scene.  He reported a 1776 with 40P11's / 48IDA's, a full roll cage and a custom dash he and Roger Grago cooked up.  I told him about this place... hopefully he'll drop by and chime in.

VA/DC is a popular area, lots of people working there.  Its only about 2.5 hours from here and one of our hi-po VW friends works there during the week.  If he gets to the area and needs some VW networking, keep me or Mike Maize in mind.

It's a unrestored second owner car and runs now a 2332 cc type 1 with 46 (!) IDAs. I still want to convince Otto to paint the headlight rings and taking the chrom off.  8)

I dont' believe that the car has it's original paint. It appears to have a later decklid [70+] on it as well as Mexican weatherstripping under it. Real nice car though. As soon as the sun comes out, I'll add a few pics of my Toga White '69 to this thread.

the car has its og paint from the roof to the trim, beneath it is new pastell white. Decklid is a convertible lid for more cooling air. And btw, I didn't say og paint, just unrestored.  ;)

I remember those Ronal wheels.  I was a sales rep for Ronal USA for two years.  My job was to sell those wheels.  Truth is they were'nt big movers.  The number one wheel at the time was the R9.  Ronal is a German company so I figure they were easier to get those VW bolt pattern wheels over there.  The job really sucked.  I was on the phone all day selling wheels to custom shops, most of which could never pay their bills on time.... ha

I took this job right after I worked for a VW engine importer/rebuilder called ECI in Garden Grove.  We used to advertise a ton in Hot VW's.  We competed against ol' Bernie Bergman, GEX, and the rest.  I remember we would get in full containers of tranny's and engines that were torch cut out of old bugs in Germany.  We would then either rebuild the motors or sell the complete engines as "good used".  We used to sell a complete running 1600 dp with a doghouse cooler for $329.  Wow. 
After I left I heard they had to condemn the building and back lot due to all the oil contamination in the ground.  Times have changed, times have changed.

Okay....... I could'nt resist.  The WORST wheel Ronal ever made was the Ronal Teddy Bear.  I actually ran these on an Integra I had for a week just for laughs.  These were by far the lamest wheels ever.  Sorry if I spoiled the thread.......  Like I said, I could'nt resist.

ECI, that sounds familiar. Anyone remember Pacific Core in Santa Ana? I built their retail operation there. They specialized in VW engine cores. They would by train car loads of motors from Mexico. Pull anything rebuildable off, and scrap the rest. Cases, heads, cams, oil pumps etc. The owner also bought out overstock and inventories from closing dealers. I helped organize all the stuff and sell it. I had alot of fun there but after a couple years I had a falling out with the cocaine dealing sales manager. I lost.

I don't typically like 4-lug Volkswagens, but I have absolutely loved that Ghia since I first saw it in Marc (http://www.luftkraft.ch)'s site, even with the late model tail-lights size of a "french bread" :D  Maybe it is the exception that enforces the rule  ;)

 I knew those guys well... even had a few "meetings" at Joe Josts with them... I met those guys around 1984 or so through a mutual friend / customer of mine, Kent Campbell (International Lock and Key) back when I was a Snap on Tools dealer. I ended up opening my VW shop right next door to Kent's shop, those guys used to frequent Kent's since he usually had a tapper of beer going ~and~ we were only half a mile from Joe Jost's. I rarely delt direct with ECI... once or twice maybe but I did buy several core engines through the guys.
Dean is married now (I haven't seen him in years), Dennis is EXACTLY the way as you remember him, he still has that SAME VW bus, and Eddie is one of my best friends to this day... Eddie is an unsung hero in the VW world... that guy really knows gearboxes.

I could go on for hours with stories about those guys, but I'll leave you with one. Dennis (Hairface) stopped by my shop one winter evening we were working late. It was cold, and Dennis decided to prodice some sort of clear, homemade, alcolohic beverage that was literally the nastiest stuff I've ever drank! I had a shot or two, but needed to get home to the kids... My brother wanted to hang with Dennis a while... Big mistake! When I came back to work the next morning, both of those guys got so ripped on that crap they ended up sleeping in the shop!! Good times!!
(Those really were good times... I should have slowed down and enjoyed 'em a little more ;))

Ernie's car was bought by a club member[his name escapes me] then later sold to my next door neighbor. I'm not sure what happened to it after that.

Funny thing that same neighbor also owned Mark Ramirez's black '67 at one time. The guy's name was Gene Gustavson, he wasn't really in the scene, he just liked alot of the cars coming by my house.

These "gasburners" are also repro's.
The car was featured in the german "vw-speed" magazine last year.

Still looks very nice, you know what size front tire he's using? Just like the way it looks.

I do believe we've just seen history in the making.
We've heard of "elephant's foot" tail lights on a late Beetle, late Ghias got "french bread" tail lights.

Here's another late model.  In dah werks....  Just took this pic today.  Its roliin now.  Narrowed beam w/disc brakes (Thanks Luke) newly installed and groovy.  Now just maybe one click in the back.  THEN..... this weekend I am going to pull the 1600 s/port, prepare the engine bay and get it ready to install the 1776.  Its getting there.....

This the 72 of a friend of mine. He is just turning into cal-look by buying a set of Gasburners with 135/80 and 205/70. Also a nice turbo muffler is on the way. I really dig the color of the car and told him to swap the bumpers for square ones. Engine is a 1300 at the moment but maybe looking for a nice 100hp 1776 this winter :).

In fact those are the correct bumpers for that car as it´s a european standard model (08/'67 - 07/'73). It just has the wrong (later) taillights and a convertible decklid.

If you look at the front fenders, if it's a standard model the bumpers fixations should'nt been in the fenders sides but inside the hood.

Hmm, all I can see are some indicators that are mounted where on late cars (from '68, besides standard models) those slots for the bumper brackets would be.
You can easily identify a standard bug from '68 - '73 by looking at the half moon shape behind the rear side window which isn´t pressed right through the metal (hard to explain in english...). As far as I know besides the big window standard bugs only the '68 model had this feature as well.
It seems that the car pictured has had some modifications (headliner, decklid, taillights) but I think it is a european standard bug (in germany called "Sparkäfer" BTW).

The 68 version Sparkäfer had no half-moons, that is  a 70`s thing and it is definetely Sparkäfer only!!
Also where are the indicators on the wings and where are the horngrills??
So I guess it must be a converted Sparkäfer!
If it was form me, change the rear lights and stick on a 1302 vert lid and keep the bumpers!
The stick in a nice TYP IV and we are talking  ;D

I agree, I have some low back frames in the garage.  But its going to be awhile before they get slapped in.   In this pic you really see how high the back is.  The other pic didnt show it well.  I think there is way too much space between the tire and fender well.  It reminds me of a Camaro with air shocks.....  We'll see

However it's toga white [with sunroof], red basket weave interior with lowbacks out of a '66 and 5.5's in front and deep 6's in the rear, all earlies. What size tires you got on that? I'm currently running 145's but I'm thinkin I might bump up to 155's.

Hi there all! That there blue 69' be my car.  ;D Yup, I'm was running 145's with late 6x15 Alloys all the way around, but now I'm running Repo-Gas burners with same size tires on it for now.

Sweet car, nice job. Like I mentioned before, I'm shooting for a similar feel with 5.5 and 6" alloys. Just got my fifth wheel tonight. Geno Comb's 69 is my all time favourite looker (late or early) the stance, the colour and a hot mouse motor to boot! it just plain rocks. I would love to see more shots of it if anyone has any.

I sent Randy a note, hopefully he still has a couple for an old greybeard like me!


It's pretty solid, specially for these parts. I like the look of the beading/running boards as well. When I was cleaning the car up, I loosened the fenders and pulled it out and cleaned it up. It was pretty stiff, but usable. Not sure what I'll do when it comes time for paint [not anytime soon], I'll just keep an eye out for another original set or hopefully WW will start making theirs again. When I got the car there was absolutely no shine on it and a fair amount of surface rust. A little color sanding and about 40 hours with a DA, and it shines pretty well. Not show-worthy, there are a lot of dents and blemishes, but it'll do. My focus now is on a motor. Nothing huge, just something streetable. 

Don't know if you noticed, it was an original VW West car, still had the plate frame on it as well as an original Black and yellow CA plate. As a bonus, attached to the key was one of those matching mini license plate key fobs. Pretty cool. Also in the rear window is a Anaheim Jacks Surf Shop. It's kinda ratty but I'm gonna keep it. There are some scratches on the drip rails so I assume that it at one time had surf racks on it.

The Rivi's were something that came up on the cheap. I had them polished just like I had on my '67 back in the day [one of many sets of wheels]. My plan is to put alloys on it. I've already picked up a set of five and I'll soon be sending them out to be refinished. I'm so on the fence about having them anodized and detailed or polished and detailed. I like the bidness look of the anodizing, but I do like a little bling. Decisions, decisions. It's been fun, however I recently refinished the interior, covers padding and German carpet from WW. Came out great, but with the new padding the steering wheel is a little to close now ::)  I'm in the process of cleaning up an old 14" Nardi wheel I had on and earlier car, hopefully that will help in my delima.   ;D

no but it's the car on the picture when don bradford do a burnout on the parking  ;)

oh that is where i have seen it before... i thought the wheels looked different (on don Bradfords picture the wheels looked the same colour as the car, if my memory serves me right)

Love the wheel/tire combo, anyone know what size tires are in the rear...I presume IRS rear axle also?

This car belongs to a guy from Reading and if you like the Formula Vee accessories from this period I doubt you'd find a more complete collection on one car. It's a well put together car too.

The orange FV car looks awesome.  However, call me crazy, but I'd love to see it with Formual Vee wheels instead of the Sprints.   ;)

The red one is perfect. Exactly how I want our 'vert to look, just with Cookies instead of 'burners (and no roof, obviously...) :D

Turtlebacks indeed, lovely on a Type 3. Though this car sure does them justice as well.

I would presume it's a 1300s or as it's also known a GT Beetle. This is mine which is just back on the road after a 6 year resto so next on the list are some fat & skinny tyres followed by a lowering up front.
The 1300s/GT Beetle is a rare car. Here in Ireland only 32 were brought in officially by VW originally but as demand grew the Irish dealers took some of the UK's allocation AFAIK.

You're right, the 1300s Bugs were imported into Ireland and the UK but the UK dealers rebadged their cars as GT Beetles but that was up to the dealer at the time so many remained as 1300s Bugs. Beetles were made in Ireland as CKDs but as these were special editions they were imported.

Saw a pic of a beautiful late model in Ultra VW this month in the Bug-In write-up - a red one, dechromed with colour coded bumpers (indicators in the bumper), detailed Fuchs alloys and a perfect stance. I suspect it's a Mexi or something like that, I remember seeing one in Sheffield when I lived there that was stock but for the Revolution alloys and the lowered front, perfect factory cal looker! :)

Nico, that late model is nice, very clean car, My all time favorite is Dustin's 69'. I kid with him sometimes when I see him that I'll trade him my seats for his car. He likes my seats and I like his car. Dustins car is done very tastefully, very clean, the color is one of my favorites. Below is a couple of pics from another post of Dustins car. Enjoy.
