Driving Hot VWs for 44 Years Strong!

« on: June 11, 2013, 16:32:26 pm »

Hey...everyone....post your shots from the classic. I have included a couple of mine but would love to see what everyone else took pictures of too! Was a great weekend.

My weekend was especially great because prior to the classic I found out my daughter, Doctor Shanna (and my VW buddy) would be moving to Phoenix to help start up a new practice.  She is pictured with me in one of the shots. The shot of my car was taken by a photographer friend Bob Caulkins, who I have known as a VW bud since 1972.  It was great seeing him again too!

All in all, a fantastic VW weekend.  I got 24.3mpg when driving at 65-68mph.  It dropped to 20.6 mpg when driving home at 75mph...and when going from Blythe through Palm Springs (into the Banning area on the way to the classic) I got 18.4 mpg.

My 2276 ran at 180-190 oil temp on the way over.  On the way back...up the INDIO grade and through the balance of California to Blythe...and then into Arizona (at over 100-105 degrees) it never went over 205.  A very good outing for the motor.  Never sputtered, bogged or missed a beat on me the whole trip.

Who says IDAs are not streetable and driveable....we continue to prove otherwise....in any weather.  :-)

I posted a couple shots at the top of the thread that others sent to me (which they took).  Still cannot believe I finally made it over to the Classic in my street car.  It has been years since driving anywhere.

Here is a shot I took at the rest stop that is at the top of the INDIO grade...as you are heading back to Arizona.  Had to make a stop to get drink and use the rest rooms. Had fun with people checking the car out. What is the first question everyone asks about your motor....."Are you running a PORSCHE engine in that thing?" Wish I had a dollar for every time someone asks that question.  LOL
