What is wrong with it? Cracks in wood? Just peeling laquer?

Just buy a new one from Flat 4, and give me your old one that worth nothing now.

I use kleen strip paint stripper( it won't hurt the wood), scrape it with plastic putty knife, DO NOT USE A METAL knife, it will gouge the wood. Then mask the metal, use a 180-220 flapper sanding disc to get the majority of stain and left over clear. Then I hand sand with 220 to clean up any sand scratches. Remove masking tape and stain wheel to proper color, then clean the stain off metal it will wipe right off, mask the metal again sprat it with sanding sealer let dry, hit it with fine steel wool, then spray it with automotive clear wit about 6 coats to get a nice finish. Install and enjoy

Don't use steel wool, it will rust under the clear.

Rayburn's right, but DO use bronze wool. It doesn't rust and does the same thing as steel wool. Very effective stuff.
