Hi Guys,

I just can't stop thinking of how I can improve a dual quiet pack.
I love the period correct look but I want it to perform almost as well as a phat boy style muffler if possible...

the short story:  Had a stainless steel phat boy that performed very good with my engine but LOUD, and when I say loud I really mean LOUD AS HELL.
Then I tried a bugpack dual quiet pack with a bigger flange (so the flange was even big as the phat boy flange) very quiet, not to say it almost sounded like a stocker...  but I felt that not only the noise went down but also the HP...  Undecided
I've seen that Tobi designed a DQP with bigger tubes but what about the mufflers?
My question is, before I cut my new bugpack DQP does anybody know what kind of muffler the bugpacks are?

If it's like option 1 it should be pretty straight forward to convert the two mufflers into a free flow system.
cons: okay, more noise but still less then the stainless steel phatboy becasue the steel of the DQP is thicker and you have two mufflers.
pros: better flow and it will perform better.

Or maybe a DQP is already like option two and I have to deal with it...  Undecided

Since I drive my car on the street and freeway, NOISE and just being too loud in the car to speak to a passenger in the car is the reason I had A-1 build me a dual quiet pack style muffler.  Tiger told me that the dual quiet pack he built me was tested on the dyno with a 200hp engine and it didn't provide more restriction than the typical single magnaflow muffler that is commonly used. The A-1 dual quiet pack that I had built has two magnaflow mufflers on it.  I didn't know what the internal configuration of it is but i suppose I could ask him.  As per my other post, I still haven't installed it as i have some fitment issues.  I should have it done soon and I'll be interested to see if the dual quiet pack limits the performance of the engine.

thats where i bought my glasspack.
 maybe we could build a few, like Tobi did,
I would want to make something anyway

Jeff, that sounds good!  Please post some pictures when you've mounted the DQP.  What was the price if I may ask?  you can pb me if you don't want to put it in public.

On both my green car and my street car I have Thunderbird dual mufflers. My street car has the standard system with a 2027. The green car has the 1 5/8 merge system. They are copy of the 4 tuned system and fit very good. Follow the finder line correct with chrome tips.  When dynoing the motor from my green car on Heads Up's dyno the Thunderbird made 8 horsepower more over a top competitor dual muffler. I understand that the merge system dual mufflers are not available anymore. But if you can find some I would buy them. The standard dual mufflers are still available. Dave Rhoads

Yeah, I was bummed to see that Pertronix, who is making the Thunderbird exhausts now, doesn't have mufflers available for the merged headers.

Hi Dem,

unfortunately I´m still searching for a good performing and good-looking (at least for my taste) solution. My homemade dual quiet mufflers were okay but not a great improvement over the cb merged dual quiet mufflers I used before. The main problem is that my heads are obviousely getting hotter than before. I think that the mufflers I got are of the reflexion type so this could be the problem.
My next attempt last season was to use a glasspack muffler with an 2,5" inlet/outlet bore. The throttle pedal felt like there was no restrictions anymore so I will fabricate another muffler for the next season (similar to a dual quite but with two glasspack mufflers) and will use a 1 3/4" header instead of the 1 5/8" header I used before.
The problem with finding the "right" muffler for a dual quiet in my opinion is that there are very few non-restrictive mufflers available that are longer and lower than the typical turbo-mufflers. Another factor to consider is that the inlet and/or outlet should not be centered to achieve the "correct" look.

Sad to hear that your home made DQP didn’t realise what we expected…  I loved the look and I thought that the bigger tubes were the solution.

So if I understand it correctly, your heads became hotter with the home made DQP then with the stock cb performance DQP that you used before?

I was hoping that the mufflers used with the stock DQP’s (bugpack, cb performance, …) were also reflection mufflers…  Do you know anything about this?

I have an original 15/8" Thunderbird header and dual QP's BUT mine is the later 80's type where each silencer BOLTS to a T piece which then BOLTS to the merged header - I haven't yet decided weather to cut'n'shut it so it looks more "original"/70's - I'll post some pic's soon  Smiley

Wow, that's an oldie but goodie... the bolt together dual QPs... I was just reading an early '80s Hot VWs and saw a pic of that kit.  I was wondering why they did that?

Jeff, that sounds good!  Please post some pictures when you've mounted the DQP.  What was the price if I may ask?  you can pb me if you don't want to put it in public.
Sorry it took me a bit to reply.  The cost was 300 US dollars plus shipping.  225 dollars for the muffler and 75 dollars for the ceramic coating and then shipping costs.
I haven't modified the muffler installed it yet, I've got home remodeling going on and two small kids to play with as well.  Smiley  I'll get to it soon enough.....

Rick does use the BUGPACK dual QPs, as far as them sticking out too far, it probable depends on what manufacture header your using.

BTW they made great HP on the dyno using them.

Looking at the picture of the cut out muffler, if you were to swap the pipe with the one in the middle with the short one on the end, that is what they would look like.

This is a picture with the Al's system on the car not the Thunderbird. The Thunderbitd mufflers are tucked in more and not sticking out as far.  Dave Rhoads

Yeah, that bothers me too!  Ricks' car performs pretty well with it, mine (with a smaller engine) doesn't perform at all with it...  Embarrassed
