The car was built and raced by Bob Inman out of Billings, Montana. Bob sold the car to someone close to Fumio Fukaya's shop. This photo was taken at Lewistiown, Montana. The car was very successful at the time. These pics sure look like it with a name change.

Thanks for the info and pics. I am sure Mr. Inman will be happy to know where it went and that it still survives. I worked and raced with Bob for many years with Corvette's but the VW was by far the most successful. Sure blew a lot of V8's away. LOL

So how difficult can it be... to be successful in Montana??  <grin>

Is this the same guy who had the Widow Maker or whatever it was called....the Fiat 124?

Actually, Bob built the car for Larry. He also was the crew. I believe the car found it's way to Hawaii where it was wrecked.

I can remember having an old video of Sum Fun and Bad Manners racing in the 80's. Mark Deacon's insane twin engine Ghia was on it too. Sum Fun and Bad Manners are two of my all time favourite drag cars. On the video Sum Fun was doing dry launches and hopping up to the start line. To this day it is etched on my memory. Anyone who know me knows I am not a fan of roof chops. And I can't think of many modifications that are as awful as poorly executed chop - well the car in The Mullholland Look adverts of old is worse! Actually, scratch that, there's NOTHING worse than a bad chop apart from bothering to complete a car with a bad chop and having the balls to take it out and race it.  Grin
this is only my personal opinion, and I know many others don't feel this way. Each to their own. If you want the headliner closer to your head - good luck to you. But having  said this... I can't respect the work that goes into a roof chop and the skill required. A few cars that have been chopped do get me going, and I'll Sum Fun is one of them and before anyone says anything I know it's not the best chop in history but I think it was the way it hopped and looked that got me. A fierce, fierce car!

As a guy that's 6 foot three inches tall, I'm not too fond of the idea of a chop top, either...Grin  It would all over for me super quick if I rolled one, wouldn't be able to duck in time, lol.

The Pied Piper and the Sum Fun car are the same car, My Dad bought it from Lee Leighton back in 1982 without a motor and he changed the name to Sum Fun. I have a pic or two with the original name on it. My Dad bought it because Lee was building our engines and he and my brother were taking turns driving Radical Rod car but my Dad wanted to drive more. Lee had it sitting out back of his shop. Dad didn't pay much for it. He crashed it into the guard rail at a drag day at OCIR because the straight axle front end broke. We went to a regular VW front end and added the one piece fiberglass front end after the wreck. After we got it all lined out again he had the whole car painted to the current paint job it still has today.

Thanks, I have lots of pics of both My Dads and Brothers cars over the years. I will try scanning them in and posting on the Samba in the not to distant future. If anyone has any questions about the Sum Fum or Radical Rod cars let me know and I will try to answer them. We had a lot of great times over the years racing all the Bug ins, Drag Days,Bug o Rama's, etc. Russell also bought my 57 oval that was more of a show/street cal look car than a race car, I owned it since 1979. I spanked many V8's over the years cruising So Cal with that car. It had a 13 second 1750cc motor in the early eights and then a 190 hp 2275 motor.

Nice to hear more about Bob's old VW. I will forward this to him to enjoy. Now if we could just find the '60 D gas Corvette we raced before the VW, life would be good! By the way, the VW was the most sucessful race car we ever ran. Much to the dismay of all the V8 cars.

My Dad had a lot of success with it also including winning the very first Pro Stock VW race held (at Phoenix I believe), the car had to have a pan, weigh 1550 lbs with driver, and a few other rules i can't remember. My Dad could drive that car hard...I think the best time was 10.85 126 mph. That was with a 2332 (84 x 94) motor, Dyno Soar heads, FK89 cam, etc. I know it is not as fast as the cars go now but for back then we were always one of the fastest.
