I've got a set of 44 IDF Webers... recently bought a friend's hex bar linkage set up to install, but noticed there aren't any holes in the cross bar mounting plates for the two little breather tubes or whatever they are that come up the top of the carburetors.  Are these tubes necessary or can they be removed?  I'm a little irked in the event I have to drill holes in the plates to accomodate these tubes, as I already had to drill my air cleaner base plates.  Just curious.

I don't have any pics, but the tops of my 44IDFs have two brass looking tubes coming up, I assume they are some sort of vent or something.  The new ones don't have these thin tubes, nor do the HPMX EMPIs, so I'm guessing they can be removed.  They come up almost to the tops of the velocity stacks, but are probably 1 to 2 mm in diameter at best guess.  I'm going to just give it a whirl and remove them rather than dick around with them, because the Weber parts diagrams don't even indicate them?

The first one photo above is where they are (were) located.  Got my hex bar linkage set up yesterday but didn't get around to hunting down oil pressure woes... if swapping out pressure relief and control valves doesn't make a difference, there may be a sizable load of 2017 parts coming up for sale soon... lol.

I haven't been a quitter since I was 15 years... I gave up driving air-cooled VWs daily finally in 2007 when I got a great deal on a newer car that I would have been stupid to pass up.  I speak mostly facetiously, but in all honesty, it's hard for this hobby to be much fun when one can barely sustain it.  That, and I live in a remote part of Oregon where nobody works on VWs, so all my options are purely mail-order (more expense). 

I'm going to hedge my hunch on replacing the oil relief valves and springs... if the oil pressure doesn't improve after that, I'm at a complete loss.  Yesterday, the gauge read like 25 to 30 PSI when the engine was cold (at idle) and dropped down to 10 to 15 at idle... as the engine warmed up, the pressure further dropped down to below 10, at which point the light came on.

Sweet.. more parts I'm going to have to buy again.   Huh Ah well, that's the least of my worries right now.  Car's not going to plug idle jets while sitting in the shop. Roll Eyes
