The hole size for the housing with the rubber boot would be 1-3/8-inch (35mm?). I would not drill out a hole that large on sheet metal, but rather, use a punch. Greenlee makes 2-piece punches for such a task, and you end up with a perfectly cut hole with no distortions. As for the actual location, we all have our own preferences to exactly where these lights should be mounted. I suggest that you look at the March 2003 issue of Hot VWs when we covered this very subject... As getting both sides exactly in the same spot in not that easy....

I would look on-line for a Greenlee 1-3/8 or 35mm metal punch... I got mine on e-bay, used. New ones could be pricey.

The first response in that thread from Zach "Put it where you think it looks right, that's all that matters" is the simplest form of truth.
You don't need to worry what others think there are no rules make yourself happy. If you "get it" you will "get it".........get it?
