I like to use 3.5/4psi if you are using factory needle and seats,if you use the aftermarket 3.0 glass ball  version then I use less as they bleed over easily

Using 3,5psi for years. Would stay away from the glass ball version at all cost.

Don't trust the small 0-15# pressure gauges mounted in the heat of the engine compartment, they are not accurate when we expect them to read at the extreme bottom of their range.  Set the regulator pressure with "a real" fuel pump pressure test guage.  If you must use one of the small gauges, turn it over, pop the small rubber plug and drain the liquid.  Then leave it vented "open" to the atmosphere.

That's funny, I was going to run a cheap Summit gauge (for effect) and before it got into the car the plug and oil fell out. I figured that was bad, so I tossed it!

So it was really just trying to help me!

You probably did the right thing anyway, I have had many sleepless nights over such a gauge, turned out mine showed different reading with different temperatures in the engine compartment... 

Installed a proper instrument in the dash with a sender in the back, problem solved.
