I know that steering column locks with ignition switches were available for pre-'68 T1s from VW.
Did they come as standard equipment on Standard or Deluxe models? Were they an option?
How was the dashboard finished? Did they just not have the hole drilled/punched for the standard switch? A block-off plate/plug?
What was the difference in a steering shaft and tube?
Thanks
Rick

I have steering wheel lock with starter button on my `58. The steering wheel lock was not standard on any 50's beetle as far as I know.
The dash was unmodified. On my car a manual windshield washer pump was installed in the ignition lock hole.
Original tube and shaft was modified, I'm sure there's pics on thesamba of these parts.
Johnny.

Hi Rick, I think they became mandatory at a certain time in Germany. My 67 has one, it is not listed in the odered options. Are you looking for a certain model year? I could send you detailed pictures of my 67 steering column if that helps.

Greg Brinton has been doing work on our '61 sunroof car that has the Euro switch. The following info is per Greg. Our car needed to change out the steering column and it was discovered that there are (were) two versions of the shaft. He also replaced the contacts in the switch itself as they were pretty much toast. The dash is as a USA version except the ignition switch hole is not there.

Great info Guys. Thank you.
I ran across an NOS switch in one of my parts stashes ($60 @ Bill and Steve's 30+ years ago!)
I'm wondering how much of a hassle it would be to use. I don't remember it having any lettering on it.
I'll have to take some pics and post them up.

I don't have any photos to prove it, but I am sure that I recall Bill Schwimmer's '59 having one?

Rick my car is a European model with locking column. I actually have a '67 locking ignition installed you can take a look at it when you take that joy ride I promised awhile back.
The above pictures of the ignition and column are perfect examples of whats what and yes the dash has no hole provided for standard ignition as stated above.

Talked to Bill last night and yes his car has the locking column. Answered a bunch of questions.
Jason, I'll hope to take a look at your car on Friday if you're there. Thanks.
