So this may be a stupid question, but what is/was the point of short manifolds for IDA's? I've read about them in the Cal-look books among other places, and I'm not quite sure what the purpose was.

My car is what it is, maybe not Cal Look per the books, but it's more than most.

For power, short manifolds = high rpm. Tall manifolds = low rpm.
Short manifolds also reverse the carburetor.

Reverse the carbs? Like the carbs just face the other way?
