Is it possible to modify a 4 speed shifter for use with a Berg 5 gear box? If so how, pics would be good Smiley

I have a Flat4 eliminator copy at the moment that I really like, or is it time to put my big boy pants on and dig deep for a dedicated shifter?

Cheers

If you send it to Berg, they will modify it, for a fee.

Each shifter has to be analysed on it's own to see if it can be modified.  I know a Hurst shifter can because that's what I use.

In a stock shifter, 1st/2nd is straight up when viewed from the back seat in the center of the car.  With a B5, it is tilted to the left a small angle in 1st/2nd

I live in England so it's probably not cost effective to do that. I keep eyeing up the Vintage Speed Club Sport shifter but the price makes me cry a little each time I look at 'em.

I seriously doubt that Berg will modify any other shifter to work for a 5-speed, much less for free. The only two shifters that I would consider for the job is either a Berg, or perhaps a Vintage Speed, which can be ordered for a 5-speed by special order.

I spoke to Ming Tang Lee from Vintage Speed at the Volksworld show about special ordering one.
I've talked myself into now as the gearbox is getting closer, you never know the stars might align and all the parts might arrive together so I can do it in one hit  Smiley

I *think* all you need to do is add a second "pin" (or possibly just remove the single pin and put a longer one in that pokes out each side of the ball), and use the 5 speed shift plate. If you can get a pic of the 5 speed ball it should be self explanatory.

Had a Berg one and changed it for a vintage speed, I am very happy Smiley

Another plus is the adjustment available on the vintage speed shifter and it took only 10 mins to put in and drive.

Cheers

Vintage Speed all the way. Tried old and new Berg five shifters. Sold them as the VS one was so obviously superior in every way. Such a great product.

I've set my heart on a Vintage Speed rapid club sport, but I'm holding off until the box arrives.
I'm in no real rush any more with my oval as I've bought a Karmann Ghia  Smiley it's love!
