amber-topped taillight lenses, when did they enter the scene in US?

Did the early, early Orange Co. guys run them? Like early 70's cars? If so, where did you get them? When I got my '67 in '86 it had a set of genuine VW lenses, which it still has. I was just curious when this trend started here in the States.
Thanks

It was well established when I got into the scene in 78. Most cal-look cars sported a set of "amber tops"

it funny you mention this cos if you check out any pic's of Old Manx's they
ALWAYS
used to run "Euro" lenses
I always thought this was a bit odd - but I guess its just to give a more "European Look"

I know they are not popular in Europe, but as long as I drive my car I will stick with the amber turn signal taillights. I like them to be noticed the all red ones are not nearly as visible. For me it is a safety issue. I have Hella on mine and they have held up well.

In 76 77 and on, as far as I can remember, everyone and I mean everyone that had a nice car switched their dead reds to two tone amber/reds. When I was 14 my next door neighbor bought one of the first DKP cars (brown metallic with BRM's) I think that car had the euro's and that was 75? maybe even 74. All the VW stores carried both colors. The old men would buy the dead reds if one broke and anyone who at least lowered their ride went to the euros. Mainly because they were uncommon and different from old dude.
My .02 cents
