I'm a So Cal native... land of just about every kind of car. Yet it's been YEARS since I've seen a Type 4 on the road.

Neals is absolutely awesome IMHO
WRT lowering the 412. The cheaper way is to take a set of front springs from a Golf1 gasoline version. (The diesel frt springs are stiffer and dont suit the 412) That will lower it 55-60 mm. That is enough for regular street driving. More and it becomes a problem. The only downside is that it doesnt carry that much in the front luggagge compartement before it stands on the rubber stops.
I used a spring from an older BMW once, but I forgot which model. That spring was 1 mm thicker in the threads, which gave the same stance unloaded as the Golf springs, but carried a load much better.
On the last one I set up, I modified a set of Koni front shocks from a T3 caravelle so they fitted in the rear and used a set of adjustable Spax from a 73 super beetle in the front. I had a new front stabilizer made ehich was 50% stiffer over stock (I forgot how thick, but I think it was about 20 mm.) And modified a 3/4" rear ADDCO stabilizer from a beetle. I think it was originally thought for a swingaxle. To top it off we used a set of BBS 7 X 16 wheels w. 205/55X 16 frt & 215/55 X 16 rear.
Transmission was an early "FA" which is about a 4,125 T1 ratio. Engine was a 2 liter type4 bumped to 121 hp.
That was ran great both around corners and on the freeway. But it disappeared about 4 years ago. I do not know what happened to it.
