Does anyone know where I can get Ally spring plate retainers like the JCL ones etc but for IRS? I think I read somewhere that GWD may do them but as I don't read German very well I can't find them on the website!

steve,what spring plates are you using? I have sway a way h/d non adjustable and just use regular swing axle retainers.I am fairly sure that if you are using adjustable ones they make retainers for those,they just have a small spacer behind the cover where each bolt goes through

Well at the moment just for mock up etc I've just got stock IRS single springplates, would you recommend sway away ones? I can't go adjustable because of the backspace of the Erco's..

Are you talking about the bras bearing ones? Those would bind if used on a IRS, so I don't think they exist.

Interesting view,I always thought it was the inner bush that was pivoted in both arcs and the outer stayed straight,if not wouldnt the spring plate rub against the housing or cover?

When I spoke with Wayne yesterday he said they sound similar to stock Porsche 944 items??

Maybe they resemble something like what Martin has posted?!

I have run the ally plate with bronze bushing for a few years with SAW non adjustable spring plates. Swingaxle and IRS. I used the same part on both. Bernie

These are the GWD versions, they feature a ball bearing rather than a bronze bush



I found the pic searching on the cal-look.com forum..

I modified a pair of swingaxle plates to Irs plates then I used the JCL retainers it works great.

I think you will find the swing axle has the same geometry problem, only worse, when you project lines from pivot points.

I run stock stuff with eurethane , and have never under stood the need for these shiny items however.

Hell I ran well into the nines(147) with stock rubber and the car drove super nice.

Perhaps there is some ET to gain from the reduced toe change?

You are forgetting the spring plate can and does twist.  There's no conflict.

There is no doubt in my mind that it works fine in stock form... with rubber. But just common sense tells me that when you twist the plates as VW intended, the rubber will let the plate pivot pretty easy compared to twisting the plate when its in a non forgiving bushing. With rubber you will deform the rubber all the way before the plate twist, with bushing the plate will HAVE to twist from the first second... unnecessary the less you have to jamb or twist stuff, the better in my book...  there is a conflict, but a very small one  Smiley

The VW IRS (Typ1 ond Typ3) and the Porsche 944 are geometrical the same. If it work on Porsche it will work on VW.
