Hot VW's article on Dave's grey truck with red gasburners, 944 brakes, suspension, Berg engine with DCNF's etc....

Was always one of my favorite articles..... used to have it pinned to my bedroom wall when I was a teen next to Zeppelin posters and my g/f's pic. Maybe you can even spy it on my wall in that mullet pic of me in the tux.  Grin

thanks fabs, good to read that article again on a very cool Type 2
personally, I always liked the red accents, still do.

This truck got my dad and I convinced to put the 2-liter in his '59 single cab when he had it though we never did any mods to suspension or transaxle. It was very fast for a big single cab, but pigeon-toed whenever you goosed it.

For those So Cal locals...A little quiz:  Who can identify where those photos were taken?

Those shots were taken at one of the Northwoods Inn. You're correct, Jim. Can't tell which location. I really miss the one they had by my house, in Belmont Shore (Long Beach area). They were great eateries, excellent food, killer music in the piano bar, and good bier lists. The pics look look like the Belmont one. Hard to tell.

Good quiz tin man!  Yes, North Woods Inn, this one in Pasadena at Huntington and Rosemead.  The suspension shots were taken at John Howe's (John is the guy who built the candy red '68 Turbo Ghia that Dyno bought from him) home nearby.

When I got the truck back from Elite (the body shop), I remember that I only had a month to get it done before starting my senior year in college, as it was my only means of transport to get there!  A lot of midnight oil burned to get that one done.  Somewhere, I have a great picture of that truck being taken apart in my neighbor's (she was so nice) driveway.  It looks like a bomb went off!  Steve and Ken (bus gurus at the time) found that bus in a junk yard in OC, never been hit, with a dual port in it.  I drove it for a short time before the one day explosion in the driveway.  Also had a wild parrot (common in these parts) fly in the fully open safari window one time and I almost crashed it into the curb trying to beat the bird out of my way so I could see to drive!  Filled the cab with feathers!

I know I mentioned it before, but the guy who ended up with the car (and it's been through some interesting hands...) has driven it a lot and it still has the same tires as it did in those photos!  George Schmidt told me that the owner, a collector in Newport Beach, just had him go and rebuild the Berg DCNF's, which incidentally, is the only work that has been done to the engine.  Crazy.

Now, Danny, talk about building some cool rides..............you should know!
