I ventured out this last Sunday to Edwards Air base to watch the VW's with my friend Mike Smith and we were rather miffed at the fact that all the VW action was done on Saturday (im sure that Hot vws ad stated sat AND Sunday racing for the VW 36 challenge) according to Mike,... so we just decided to walk and gawk. Upon talking with several animated racing enthusiasts, we shortly learned to know of the RESPECT the VW's brought to the mile and a half program. One of the Standouts was in fact a certain Red K Ghia that wowed EVERYONE there when the timers blinked 141mph..!! This was in fact the entry of non other than Darrell Vittone who has been toiling for several months with his new "36 HP Challenge" Ghia project. I want to Personally say "CONGRATULATIONS DARRELL" for your many years of dedication and vision to the VW community and for Wow factor witnessed by the many attendees there...!! Everybody understands this motor is based on a 25hp case and sets the bar pretty high for the 36hp challenge class.  |

Wow! Top speed in my '50 vert was 76mph and I could feel the doors shaking! I know ghias are much more aerodynamic but still that is very impressive

Saw this on the tube the other day... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CTuJv9qjGIThe prior record was 108mph, so 141.8 is pretty sweet! The motor measures in at 1798cc and uses Denzel cylinder heads. Word has it that a hair dryer might be in the works where the current record sits at 129mph.... |

Who ever will be using a hair dryer better start buying all of the extension cords you can find at all of the Home Depot in Calif to make you you have enough to make the miles LOL !!!!!!

Hope for power, yes. Hope for reliability also, doubtful. Was this the same engine that was in the (Inch Pincher?) Beetle last year? I can't imagine what the price tag on that engine is |

My bet is that it is... that one used a stroked (82.1mm) 912 crank and 85mm CP pistons on Carillo rods in Nikasil coated cylinders.
The cam is from Web and uses Porsche lifters. The case is a well-seasoned 1949 model.

That's cool Sarge, thanks for sharing. I've been wondering lately if an 82 crank would fit, I know the guys at Wilhoit squeezed one into a 356 case (91x82), and the architecture is of course similar. Really pushing the boundaries of what Ferdinand intended, gotta love it  |

the 49 case had some oil leaq problem who was solved the first time but this time they reapperd , and darrell goes with another case ;-)
