no, no longer there. I think it is a car dealer complex now. Saw my first VW drag race there, 1987.
Never got to race there, but went with friends in their VW's on Wed nights.

Long gone as Jim has said - They had quite a few bug shows. This track had things going on 4-5 days a week. Open drags on wed. nights, as well as motocross. Thrs. nights were speedway racing. Fri. nights and sat. nights were on the 3/8 mile dirt oval. Sat and sundays were drags again. It was a very big loss when it closed down.

Baylands raceway in Fremont CA. I also saw my first VW drag racing at this track in the mid 80's. I have heard that the land was never developed because of soil contamination? Anyone know if this is true.

yes the land was and still is contaminated - they did build on it - When it was Fremont Drags they use to race boats out there - they had 2 lanes of water and boat draged - But some of the best drag racing in our area - allways a fast track - better than sears point. My first time at Fremont was in 1974 - and was there for the very last Sprint car race, Drag race, and Bug show.

I grew up 2 miles from Baylands. I was at the last race (dirt sprint cars) they held there in November 1988. It is now Fremont Auto Mall.

I went out to the Bay Area back in 84' to visit my Bros. Saw my first Bug-o-Rama at Baylands. Those pictures bring back some memories. Kris Klingaman was always running hard. I remeber him well.
I was soo Hooked on VW's from that one race, I ran out to Bugformance and bought my first set of heads and brought them back to Ohio in my suitcase. I also have to admit that I picked up a few colored dist caps. The "Right Stuff Ghia" was on a rotissary display.
I remember being suprized at how many side draft turbo setups were going down the track. That was kind of a rare thing back then... Quite impressive to a19yr old kid...

I remember those shows all to well......some fun times, and crazy times....I recall worrying about the weather and once or twice timing light issues. what sucked was the dirt area for the car show. Still it was a good show and fill in for the lost of OCIR. Definately some fast times ran there. here's one of the posters for the event. I still have the polo staff shirts for every event at baylands and bakersfield along with rolls of posters
