-183B or -183C side covers?

If the latter, they have large O-rings.  Pull the side cover off and replace the O-ring.  Don't forget to lube the O-ring, and for christ's sake, DON'T GOOP IT UP WITH SEALANT!

Then go crazy with your sealant.

The trans cases we are using are all well over 30 years old.  The machined surfaces have long since corroded.  When I build a gearbox that gets the "master service", I remove all the studs from the case, then lap the surfaces flat.  You would be surprised at how bad they are.  This also takes care of the corrosion.
Don't forget to sand the flange for the starter to bright metal so the starter has a chance to ground out.

Also check that the axle flanges haven't been overtightened at some point – they only need to be distorted a little to cause annoying leaks.
