Ok this is a tad complicated due to it being a fiat 600.

Currently the fiat has a set of type 1 drum on the back with 5.5 et 25 stock wheels, i am doing the rear end work ready to order the CMS wheels for the rear. I have a set of NOS type 3 wide 5 drums for the back.

So first question is can i fit the Tpe 3 drums onto the IRS setup ( think of it as a stock IRS bug ) and will it increase the track at all ?

Thank you for any help as i am going to start putting the rear end together over march.

no idea about the increase, but i know type3's are wider then type1. not much but they they are wider. and the good news is the wide5's (64 and 65 model for sure) will fit the splines off an IRS car and can be used with the type3 backing plates. i did the swap with 4 lugs from a swingaxle to a IRS and found no problem. i did have to use the IRS spacers and not the swingaxles. and i did also use the coverplates from the IRS model, but that is not mandatory in my experience.

maybe not the greatest help, but hope it helps a bit

i think they should bolt straight up, no machining needed for a long axle end, i'm sure Bruce will know more

Hi Rob, I did the swap with four lug type 3 drums also on a IRS chassis. The four lug drums give the same wide as the five lug ones and like Benssp said it's indeed a straight bolt on swap.... I don't know exactly how much the track get's wider (maby 5 mm), i can stil drive the bug with 5,5 inch Pedrini's (et 40) and some 5.5 inch steel standard wheels (et 25) both with 205/70/15 tyres and still no rubbing on the stock fenders... hope this is a bit usefull for you..

As a first post. If you do swop the shoes are the same as 240 Volvo's  Shocked or early mk1 golfs. I owned a Squareback for over eight years and resorted one year to having a local friction lining shop match them for me as I couldn't get hold of type 3 ones quick enough for the MOT.

You have to know that type 3's always were long axles. So no problem fitting T3 drums on IRS.

Early T3's had same diameter drums as beetle, but wider with wider shoes. Specific back-plates and brake-cylinder for wider shoes.

Then the second wide 5 generation: bigger drum diameter (same as late 4 lugs), so do the back-plates and shoes (same shoes as front super beetles). You can fit 1302/03 brake cylinder if you don't have the good ones.

And finally the 4 lugs: same as above but with split hub and drum, similar to the 5*112 bay's system.

In any case you will increase the track, and it will fit the IRS. Just be sure to have the matching stuff.

Hope this help.
