Anyone run into problems with alternator shaft play?  I have a Bosch alternator with low mileage but there is a lot of play in the shaft from front to back.  I took it apart and the bearings appear good but there is about a 1/4" of play.  The guys at the Buggy House said most likely it has to do with the bearing retainer near the fan.  They said that the metal back there is weak sometimes and gets bent and the bearing chews it up.  I did see metal shavings within the housing.

Has anyone else ran into this problem?  I guess I need a new alt or a new rear cover and bearing housing.

Bosch alternators are notorious for having a mile of end play. I hate them,

It never dawned on my to check the end play on a new Bosch alternator.  I will sure do so on the next one I buy.

What are the options nowadays-buy a Bosch or one of the OE ones made in China?
