I remember reading about this mod in the Berg blue book, but have never done it and was wondering if it is worth it?

Yes, but make sure you deburr the edges of the groove you make.

I (once) used a simple rotary cutoff tool in a die grinder, then polished OD with 400 wet/dry/oil
Think that was 15 yr ago, haven't done it in one engine I've built since, and only one or two have been stock rocker motors.

Mine are grooved. Done with a cutoff wheel in a die grinder then deburred.
