The distributor drive is home made.  There is a whole thread about it on the SAMBA.

I think it was also mentioned on the lounge before.

Still, I can't understand why?. I would risk to say that this engine is overcomplicated Wink

nice topic on the samba, forums > vintage speed. Cool build, including glass to check oil level!

He uses two timing lights at the same time to get this little hummer in tune. Three carburetors and two distributors all under one hood.  Shocked

The three carburetor kit is a homemade reproduction of a vintage kit also.
It is a cool motor though.

Had the Bosch .019 in my Java Green '66 on the balanced 1,641cc that I built from scratch. That engine ran hard with that distributor and an Engle W-100 cam and cleaned up heads.

Wink

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the workmanship and the fact that this engine works at all (if it works).
But, heaving in mind all the discussions about what is cal-look and what isn't.... This engine contradicts the basic rules of cal-look.
It is a technical equivalent of what resto-cal is in styling. Not that there is anything wrong with that - just not my cup of tea.

Still, a very interesting... curiosity. Smiley

Just because he can does not mean he should.

I don't believe anyone was implying that it was cal look. A 36hp in any form surely isn't Wink

Just because he can does not mean he should.

Does it really upset you that much?? He made a reproduction of a vintage carb kit, and added twin distributors/plugs to light it off, what's the problem??

Freaking AWESOME!
Way to GO! ... Literally.

I wish I would've seen that if it was @ the Texas Classic ... would've stared at it for at least 30 minutes.
Funny thing is that guy probably lives 15 minutes from our shop ... never seen it!

I want one, but with two MAGS! LOL

Does it really upset you that much??

And does it really excites you that much? Wink

It's a forum, people have different opinions, one will say that this engine is awesome, other will say that it's stupid.

Don't think there is a problem with that. But still, it doesn't make sense. For me, a beauty in engineering is in achieving given goals in the simplest and most efficient way. This is one of the reasons I drive a Beetle. And this is why this engine don't excite me, even though I appreciate the workmanship and see all those shiny parts being made. It appears on various forums regularly, which is not a surprise, as it 's really flashy.

But hey - I'm a man that prefers late model Ghias with square bumpers and big taillights over previous versions, so.... Wink
